    I rate Boston Lager the number one Vienna style lager. I've never found another to match it. I especially appreciate the balance, something that seems lost now in this age of ever stronger IPAs. When Sam Adams first came out it was a revelation, winning top spot in beer competitions year after year. I think now that it's been so successful commercially and the fact you can buy it anywhere it gets overlooked. Put a different label on it, disguise it as some up and coming new craft brew and beer snobs would be gushing over it, just as they did when it first came out.

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  Před 4 lety +2

      I can't sit here and pretend that I've had a lot of beers within the style, but for me, it's definitely up there as one of the best. I also think Great Lakes Eliot Ness is right up there with it. I do think if you dressed this up with a different label from a hot, new brewery as their newest "Amber Lager," people would be impressed. I agree with you, no doubt. I'll always appreciate this beer no matter what, as it's readily available and fantastically priced. Thanks for the comment!
      Cheers!

      Perfectly Stated! Here where I live in North Carolina, we have local beer breweries a plenty. They do a fine job on porters, stouts and ales. Not so much in lagers however. Sam Adams is still the king of craft lagers in my book!

    Great review. Boston Lager has a very distinctive flavor that never disappoints. I drink this very often, and I'd have to give it a solid 4/5. Occasionally I see this for $6.99 for a six.

    I`m enjoying a Sam Adams Boston Lager right now, out of the 22oz perfect pint glass that they offer. I love it!! Very nice balance between malt and hops. Jim Koch, did a great job with his great grandfathers recipe, which was known as Louis Koch Lager way back then. To think he got his start brewing this beer in his kitchen, how cool is that. That 22oz glass that they came out with is the same design as the 16 oz sure saves on trips to the fridge lol. I have enjoyed this beer for many years!

    This is the best mass produced lager, I always have some in my fridge, not meant to blow your tastebuds away, it’s just good beer. I prefer it to German lagers since we get it fresh , while German bottles usually don’t even have a date on the bottle.

      @@averagejoe716 well i liked the fall pack which had jack o pumkin which literally surprised me given that the Elysian night owl had me sitting w my head between my legs wanting to vommit so i was impressed. Also it had Festbier which is honestly one og the best beers ive had. But i kno i told u that. Also summer ale which i liked but i wouldnt go ouy my way for it. And Cold Snap which is a belgian wheat but much better quality than a blue moon,the Rebel IPA which was one of the only IPAs i enjoyed.and Winter Lager which im stoked about. Lol 4 years back i had 4 winter lagers on tap and got cut off lol was embarrassing. . Other than that ill yry anyyhing from them. I live in the west so it brings a New England quality which is unmistakable. I know its big craft but idc i think its one of the best American breweries. I usually drink German berrs and Sam Adams has a German quality and a big selection. Plus i feel its been passed by a lot in the beer world. Lol you probably think im some beer rookie im really not tho lol And they dont have singles of the festbier its a new beer in the pack cuz they took out 76. So the Festbier is a catch so you buy the pack. Worth it.

      I definitely don't think you're a "beer rookie," Josh. I was genuinely interested in what other Samuel Adams beers you drink since you love Boston Lager. I agree with you that I think Samuel Adams -- and other big craft breweries -- are passed by so many craft beer drinkers, especially new ones. Samuel Adams will always hold a special place in my heart because they helped get me into craft beer. I still enjoy trying new stuff from them, not to mention revisiting old beers from them, too. I definitely want to revisit Cherry Wheat, I want to try the Festbier, and there are so many more that I'm forgetting. BTW, I might be able to find a single of the Festbier because many grocery stores and beer stores around me break up mixed packs all the time. If I do, I'll definitely give it a go when I'm back. Thanks for the in-depth response, man!

      @@averagejoe716 yea no problem. I only said that cuz many ppl think sam adams isnt craft. To me, its the epitome of craft. They have so many other beers. But yes. Festbier has a pleasant taste w just enough hop bite but its not overly malty and is 5.8 percent and you cant tell at all. I truely hope they make festbier a regular but i doubt it.based on the sales aspect. They get you w the seasonal packs but its cool because the beers stay special and its constantly changing. But i think Boston Lager will b their best creation. It checks all the boxes. And its a beer to enjoy. Slow and steady wins the race in terms of the BL. Its an 1860s recipe and i can totally picture that. Almost hand made like. Like drinking a time portal lol

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  Před 3 lety

      That's a tough one, moofushu. If you like smoothies, then maybe Fruit Smoothie Sours would be for you. They're typically not more than just tart and are conditioned on fruit puree. Outside of that, it all comes down to your taste buds. I always recommend that you find a beer store close to you that allows you to buy single bottles or cans so you can try a handful of different styles without breaking the bank. I used to not enjoy beer, but once I started trying out a bunch of different styles, I realized quickly there's something for everyone, myself included.

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  Před 3 lety

      They're similar -- because they're all Lagers -- but they have some differences. I feel like a Vienna Lager is lighter in character and a bit more bitter, while a Maibock will be typically stronger ABV-wise. I do enjoy all three styles, though.

      Unfortunately, Vienna Lagers aren't as popular nowadays, but if you can get your hands on any beers from the Great Lakes Brewing Company out of Cleveland, Ohio, their Eliot Ness is very similar. In fact, I slightly prefer it over Boston Lager. Outside of that beer, just keep your eye out for any Vienna Lagers, which is the style of Boston Lager. You might find a few at your local breweries.
