5 Years of Keeping Small Reef Tanks, It's Time for Something New

- For 5 years I've kept numerous nano reef tanks and shallow reef tanks, they were all low tech mixed reef aquariums. Over the years I've gained more experience and knowledge about keeping coral and saltwater fish.
Now, it's time to break down my 3 shallow reef tanks to build something new. I am going to build a 250 centimeter long shallow aquarium and we are going to turn in into a nature-inspired environment with lots of small nano critters such as crabs, shrimp, snails and nano fish. I'll also be using macro algae, mangroves and other plants. In this video, we talk about future plans for the fish room.
A few topics we cover in this video are:
- Fish room build
- Reef tank setup
- Shallow reef tank & nano reef tank

*I’ve had a lot of fun with this setup and can’t wait to show you what’s next! Stay tuned! 🙌*
Over the years people in this hobby are becoming more and more gear-head 😂 and like to complicate things just to feed their geeky side so to see someone who like to keep things simple you got my respect ✊
Thank you so much! The new tank will be low tech as well, no skimmers, sumps, etc. I’ll have to use more flow pumps.. so technically there will be more tech. But in terms of types of equipment it will be the same 😎
I cant stand the tech part! More tech means more maintenance. Keep it simple and stupid.
It’s crazy to me to use anything more than a skimmer and water changes in anything less than 300L.
This is exciting! Can't wait to see how the new project comes together!! 😀
I’ve enjoyed all the tanks, but what’s coming next is even more exciting! Good job buddy 🎉
Thank you!! Yeah, it’ll be awesome! 😎
Great video as usual! Looking forward to what comes next!
You inspired me to start my first reef tank and while it's been a wild ride it's super enjoyable.
Love your methodology. Interestingly it’s one that Julian Sprung has been doing for decades and I’m hoping this level of simplicity is the future of the hobby as opposed to the current equipment first approach.
So glad for you on getting a new tank can’t for the new series just started my new tank build be following along.❤🎉🎉
Can't wait to show you guys! It’s going to be really cool! Keep me posted on your build as well! 🙌
You're a true visionary! - "Success is built on diligence."
So exciting!! Those fungia plates you have going on there are no joke!!!
They’re awesome, they are definitely coming back into the new tank! 🙌
I can't wait to see your new set up. I bet it will look beautiful.😊
I hope so too!
Great update!
Thanks Graham! I’m excited for what’s to come next! Stay tuned 😉
I can't wait for this. 👊
i'm glad you've found something you wanted to do. its been clear for a while you've been stuck at where your at. Good luck!
Thank you! Im so excited! A change is good :)
You are doing what I have wanted to do for a long time. Very excited to see how it works out for you :)
Thank you! If you have the opportunity you should go for it as well! 😎
Very excited for this! Love your inspiration and the long shallow tank will look fantastic!
Thanks man, I really appreciate that!! 🙏
So looking forward to see what you will reveal. Your approach to reef keeping is keeping me interested.
Thank you! Stay tuned! :)
Looking forward to seeing the new build
Looking forward to seeing the new setup.
I'm so excited my friend good for you!! Power moves 💪
Thanks so much!!
Can’t wait to see the new setup 🤩 Mangroves are doing good 🎉
Thank you!! Yes, very happy with them 🙂
Hello from the US. I subscribed to your channel today so I can follow along with your new venture. The new build has me intrigued as I have thought about a similar project but lacked the knowledge of how to put it all together. I am hoping to watch and learn and live vicariously through your project. Thank you for sharing..
Welcome aboard! The new project is going to be really interesting, stay tuned! And while you’re here, you might enjoy the older videos!
The end of an 'era'! 😁
I am looking forward to your upcoming video's, sounds very promising!
Yep, stay tuned! ;)
Love the plan
It will become awesome, looking forward to see the final result.
Esse aquário ficou incrível!
Absolutely great video man !!!
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
cant wait!
Hey Danny, I think a lot of us viewers are really excited to see the new project grow and develop over time, I know I am! Looking forward to this new journey.
Thank you! Stay tuned!
Love when another fellow hobbyist gets a new fresh setup, i just downsized from 110 gallons to a 20 due to just wanting simplicity. Great video, danny.✌🏻
Im new to the channel, this fish room looks sick
Awesome, thank you!! There are over 100 videos of it on the channel, check it out! 😎
I think the very obvious thing you see with people who start with simple systems, realise that they will need the specialised equipment to keep the tank stable. The key is to ensure you match the bioload with the tank nutrient uplift.
Ultimately we all wish it was cheaper, but realistically you need the heavy equipment if you want to keep any decent size fish and corals. Anyone that thinks there is a cheat code is sadly mistaken.
Good luck for the new project 😉
Thank you! 😃
I would make one really wide front to back, I love the depth and the top down lagoon look. My tank is 350x160x50cm so a little bit bigger but sort of the same just scaled up.
Try growing sea grass, it is a whole new adventure. There are many species that vary in size and leaf shape.
I want to, just very hard to get here in the EU. Even heard it’s illegal, but not sure. :/
I love your saltwater setups 😢 sad to see them going, cant wait to see the new tanks.
It’s going to be awesome, stay tuned! :)
I have become really curious and am looking forward to your new project.
Stay tuned! 🙌
Very beautiful, very powerful.
Thank you very much!
Love is that
Veryy good
I'm about to blow your mind, Every beach is the skimmer think about it!?!
Biggest thing is biodiversity. If you want the tank to take care of itself without maintenance. You need biodiversity. I haven't cleaned my one tank in well over 3 weeks. Its crystal clear and glass is always algae free. Copepods and amphipods handle a lot of the clean up for film algae. Then you have all your CUCs. I am literally lacking algae for once in my life. I actually want some again lol.
Love from india ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I totally Like the style of your tanks and I‘m curious about the new project. In germany there is Neytrop, who is actually planning a mangrove project as well and he gets some mangroves by jungle leaves shop and by his friend Svens Terra-torium. Maybe they can help you with bigger mangroves. You are in the netherlands, correctly? Thats Not that far away from the western part of germany 😉
Oh nice! I got my mangroves from Jungle Leaves Shop as well 🙂
Great plan , what about canister filter i think it will help a little and it’s not heavy
Hmm don’t think I’ll get that for the new tank either.. but who knows! It’s going to be a pretty complicated system and I want to keep it as low-tech as possible haha 😝
I hit the bell Donny
I appreciate that! 🙌
Minimum equipment is a air pump. Pumping clean air from outside
What I found out is that mangroves trees eat up a lot of nutrients and very hardy to
Sieht richtig geil aus ohne Filter , wie oft musst du Wasserwechsel machen?
Talked about this in the video 😝 started of with weekly water changes but now I was doing just 10% once a month ;)
Alleen 10cm breder. Het totaal is zo’n 400 liter. Dat kan een vloer makkelijk houden ;)
How are you going to do with the fish? I'm thinking about changing my setup but I don't know what to do with the fish from the old setup, as I don't have space to keep both setups :/ Will you have to sell your fish?
I’ll keep some fish. I definitely want to keep one pair of clownfish and I’ll give the other fish to a friend :)
I want expor coral if you want
let me leave you with this quote from the fantastic jeff goldblum in a little movie called jurassic park "Your Scientists Were So Preoccupied With Whether Or Not They Could, They Didn’t Stop To Think If They Should"
how many liters?
Keep the worm rock
Yep.. that one will definitely get a nice spot in the new tank 😎
First 🎉
Yay! Thanks for being so early, I really appreciate it!! 😎
Im sad if you leave and no comeback 😊
Watch the video 🙃 I’m not going anywhere 😝
Keep the aquariums and do your paludarium why get rid of it, impossible
I have no room in my bedroom for yet another tank. And like I mentioned, maintaining 3 small separate systems is not fun to me anymore. :)
I'm getting out of the hobby it's not working for me if you don't have money don't go around it
So sorry to hear that 😔
@@DannysAquariums I got new equipment today , not gonna give up yet , starting with80% water change , wish me luck.
What are the issues you are running into?
@@DannysAquariums my corals are melting (shrinking) , I got another light maybe it fix's that , previously I was raning diy light and the isp test shows little bet of copper and heavy metal in the water.
Thank you for your concern, this is a reason to continue.
Hmm, yeah maybe the heavy metals are the main problem. What kind of corals were shrinking? You can message me any time, DM me on Instagram or email me! I always try to help out wherever I can 😊
383cm woulda fit through the skylight...I believe! 🤌
Haha maybe… 🫣😂
