  • Located right along bustling I-275 in the Cincinnati suburb of Springdale lies it’s crown jewel. Now abandoned and waiting for demolition, today we take a look at Tri County Mall.. a Cincinnati classic. Once being the 2nd open air mall in the city, Tri County changed many times over the years to keep up with an over-saturating mall market. But over the years, the overmalling of the city, changing times and retail demographics, had Tri County Mall falling out of favor. Anchors left, tenants closed in exodus. And we’re left with the remains.. Take a tour with me today as we explore the massive 1.3 million square foot Tri County Mall, in its final days, and tell the story of the old giant..

For me the creepiest feature was that the mall was so clean and well kept - most places on the verge of closing skip cleaning and changing lights - the crew running this one didn't. It was almost like they were just going to give the mall a vacation and then everyone would come back.

Loved the Lazarus at this location. I also remember buying a GAP sweater here in late 1999 that I still actually have. The food court was the first time I tried Chick-fil-A, thanks to my roommate insisting I try it. It was still fairly busy in the early 2000s, the last time I was there, sad to see it like this.

The nostalgia is so real for me. I grew up going to this mall, as a kid getting pictures with Santa and the easter bunny, and later at 16, my first job was here. Sad to see it go but it was definitely time. RIP Tri-County Mall

I remember when the mall was open are back in the 60s. I even remember shopping and many of the stores mentioned, including Kresges and Fanny Farmer. I also remember when they roofed it over.
The mall I see in the video is one I don't recognize at all. I stopped going there a long time ago after they added the second floor.

It’s insane, I moved into Cincinnati about 7 years ago, and this mall was so lively and cool, since I’ve never been to an actual “retro” mall before. I still remember the classic mall santa taking pics with kids, interesting stores like a retro game stores, fye stores, etc. I would go there with my family once a month. And just like that, seemingly overnight, the mall just died out. A few stores stuck around but it was so jarring to see a mall just fizzle out, from one month to the next. Great vid!

Going back through the playlists on your channel and I always come back to the cincinnati ones. It's both exciting and sad to see all the malls that I grew up spending countless hours at as a kid close and be demolished. I remember when both Forest Fair and Tri County were always crowded and bustling. Thanks for documenting these so that people like me can continue to relive the memories!

Krazy city was phenomenal as a kid it felt like it had so much unique activities from rides to panning for rocks, it was one of the highlights of my childhood. I feel like I also remember a Disney store that had this giant tv screen that’d play Disney clips while you shopped all the accessories. Such a nostalgic video wish I had a Time Machine to experience its prime same with cincy mills

    This breaks my heart
I grew up 5 miles from tri county in the 90s
    Got my ear pierced there
It was crowded all the time
I use to work at BJs which is a restaurant in the mall
And that was in the 2000
You could hardly walk through there
    Sears before they closed
And then it just was going down down down as years passed
Every time I went home for vacation and asked my dad about it he said
“Yeah Tri County ain’t doing to good”
    Man…. Different time

Hello from a new fan. I grew up close by. 1963--outside Shillito's there was a kid's village. Kids (me) could drive gasoline powered cars, not on rails, but real steering, through the town. Street signs, traffic signals. A "gas station." An innovative go-kart like destination fun place of the early '60s. The open air setting added to the wow experience.

You know what gets me? Everyone that says we need many more apartments built to level out affordable housing here in the US. Right now in our country hundreds/thousands of these so called dead or abandoned malls exist. These massive buildings are all there, and could be turned into viable living communities and many apartment homes. communities with various community centered venues and store fronts etc. Some of the malls are so elegant with marble floors and more than enough parking for all, plus you could also build outdoor areas like a splash pad, gardens, and other outdoor communal spaces. There could be a laundromat or other services. Each apartment could be like a whole home! I think a lot of problems would be solved if we all start to think outside of the box.

Man, this place used to be awesome. They had two really good independent game stores, one of them hung on for a long time while the mall was on the decline. I didn't spend as much time here as a kid, as I did in Northgate and Forest Fair (Cincinnati Mills) malls.
The red and green store to the mid-left of the frame at 11:12 used to be one of them, called Game Swap. The other was much smaller but was tucked away into a very small retail shop. Super dense but they had all kinds of stuff.

The malls need to be repurposed. The options are endless. Gyms, with long running tracks. Clinics. Colleges or universities. Skate parks. Laser tag. Senior centers. Community centers. Homeless shelters. Low-cost housing. Spas. Live theaters. Bumper cars. State fair games. Something needs to be done with all this good space in dead malls and closed box stores.

Most of this mall looks 80s with the sparkling marble floor and round columns. The part that looks 90s are the parts of the 2nd floor with the square columns, the white purgatory feel and the over abundant skylights going down the center of the ceiling. This mall definitely kept a large part of the 80s design and I like it, especially the beautiful floors.

My friends and I would go here all the time in the 20-teens. They had security everywhere and the shop workers were strickt on the curfew. When we would see a security guard near us we would whisper "avoid authority" and run behind the nearest adults and act like they were one of our parents. Very fun memories. You always knew the "type of person" someone was from what mall they shopped at in Cincy. Kenwood, Northgate, Tri-County, Eastgate or Florence.

I grew up in the area and went many times as a kid when it was just the one level, and of course for many years after it became two levels. It was crazy though that three large malls were all within 4 exits of each other on I-275...Northgate Mall, Forest Fair Mall, and Tri-County. I also worked at two locations in Forest Fair Mall when it first opened. I was a bar back at Jackass Flats at the America Live Entertainment complex. I also worked for the Mole Hole for many years. There are several contributing factors as to why malls are closing and declining, but there is one in particular that seems to be the ongoing culprit….
I’m a mail carrier for the postal service and our office just started receiving Amazon about three or four months ago. Our work load has more than doubled since it started.(we also took a massive pay cut). It’s so much easier and in many cases cheaper to order through Amazon. Brick and mortar stores, are unfortunately unable to compete…..Amazon has been the death nail for malls across the country, and it’s killing the Post Office as well 😠

All that you needed to know was where in the part of town, was this mall. Know that it was in a relatively HIGH crime area (still is). It was inevitable that it was going to fail and that 'shop-lifting raids' had happened in the past etc. Know that its plan to provide housing? Well that is going to go bad -- as well, and it will fail. A blight on the city -- if you will.

  • @AnthonyCuozzo-dd4yj
    @AnthonyCuozzo-dd4yj Před rokem

Interesting video but to correct a small fact. Shillito's didn't acquire Rike's. All three stores (Shillito's, Rike's and Lazarus were divisions of Federated Department Stores operating separately in markets less than 100 miles apart from each other but each having separate administrative functions, including buyers, advertising, billing, accounting, inventory management, etc.... Shillito's and Rike's were initially combined into one unit to reduce administrative costs and achieve efficiencies. A few years later, since Lazarus was the larger chain, they combined all three stores under the Lazarus umbrella. This trend started in the mid 1980s in every major retail organization (Federated Department Stores, Associated Dry Goods and Allied Stores). That is also how and why Associated Dry Goods combined Pogue's into their Indianapolis based L.S. Ayres division. Both served similarly sized and economically similar markets so it all boiled down to reducing redundant expenses to achieve efficiencies and greater return for the shareholders.

That’s the problem with building so many malls. They go hog wild putting up as many as the areas actually needed. When the boomer moved off to Florida and the other southern states they took their wealth with them. Todays it’s the smaller outdoor shopping plazas which are being built.

Hey North I have an idea for some music! You could use some old 80s cassette tape test demos or old mall/Kmart shopping music cassette tape recordings. A good one is the Certron Ferex C-90 type demo video by Fardemark. I recommend you check out his channel bro!! 😎
