This video is getting old, and while it still covers the basics and is worth watching for the new RC Tanker, there have been many advancements so I've done an update. The update does not cover the basics covered here, just what's new as of 2020. If you find this video informative, you can see the update here • "So You're Gonna Buy a...

@@elfplays250 I just found a scale tank club in Denver with a quick google search online!
Aren't we all?
I watched this a few months ago, now I own a fully modified 1/16th scale HL T-72, and I have a Hooben T-55A coming in the mail. I just love the collective and being able to drive it around outside.
I own two rc tanks i just enjoy driving them around my garden over obstacles and i enjoyed painting them, i own a heng long tiger my first tank witch i slowly upgraded to full metal and a taigen full metal panther G.
My advice to new comers buy the taigen full metal over the heng long cheaper ones as you will spend more upgrading it.
Dude, this was AWESOME! This is the second video of yours that I have seen today. I REALLY appreciate the information and education you are giving me about this cool hobby. I cannot wait until my Abrams arrives next week!!!!!
Just bought my first tank and found your video to be most informative. Thank you Gary!
Gary a true tanker, keep up the tutorials for the up and coming!👍👍
The second time watching your video. There's a lot of information here. Good tips on controllers and I agree driving FPV is insanely fun. You have a fantastic collection, makes me feel okay for owning and upgrading 7 vehicles, although I have added a couple of trucks to my initial HL 4 tanks. Thanks!
2021, and im just getting into this. So cool
nice to see a competent reviewer, that knows about the r/c side of the hobby, but also knows the terminology and the names associated with the actual vehicles themselves, which i think is just as important as the workings of said vehicles.thank you for such an informative video, being a 30 year static whermacht und luftwaffe vehicle builder, the details count.thanks gary.
You have a nice collection. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Been into racing nitro rc for years, making the move to rc tanks now and am very excited.... informative video, thank you 🙏🏻
Quite a collection, Gary!
Great vid, nice fast pace and good show on the tanks
Thanks!
Remember watching this 5 years ago still great to see
I did an update just a couple years ago but it's still amazing to see how far the hobby has advanced in the last 10 or 15 years. The update video is around here somewhere and also includes some of the new trucks that are out. I just picked up an extra 1/6 scale Roc hobby Jeep for a good price as well as an sas desert raider kit from dragon and we're going to see if we can combine the two and come up with something reminiscent of rat patrol.
Speed , Incline
Climbing ability, battery life.. that's all I need to know. Great collection
This is great. All the videos I see show the tank running but nothing about how to get started and which ones to start with.
Wow, great informative video. Thanks for taking the time to post it. I learned a lot! Regards, Jimp
This was really helpful since Im thinking about getting into the hobby
Thank you! It's so hard to find info as a beginner
RC tanks are way cheaper than married life LOL.Just ran across the video.Nice collection and good information.Just getting into the tank hobby with my grandson.Just got a M1A1 full metal upgrades. My little buddy loves it when I haul in on my lowboy trailer. He just thinks that's the greatest.
Great job. Just got a Torro Airsoft metal edition Panther G. Just learned a lot. Thanks
I use biodegradable BB's in my tank when outdoors , they will totally disolve after a few months unlike the plastic ones .
Das ist gut,
Sehr gut
Thank you for sharing, sir. Perhaps, an update on your current RC tanks line up and additional tips for newbies ?
Great info, thanks from the uk
Hi Gary this is a great intro to tanks awesome job! I just picked up one of the same tanks you've got. Its the Tagian T 34-85 airsoft Metal version. I've always been very interested in tanks and now its time to start learning and collecting more of them. Love the man cave by the way, nice collection. Big thumbs up ans subbed as well.
Awesome Gary you got a lot of $ sitting there!! Incredible.... Love it !
Thanks for sharing your knowledge
impressive collection!
You, sir are living my dream.
Nice RC tank collection you got there, I too have my RC tank motor pool I got IR and Airsoft from VS, too Heng Long and others I mod them and paint them, but unfortunately I stop collecting them because of cost and space but still nice hobby.
yeh every kind of rc is long expensive journey. I have off roaders and boats and i need parts. very helpful video indeed because i always wanted an rc tank but now ive looked into it a bit further i realise there are a few important choices to make. thanks
Thank you very much for the info. Awesome tanks!!!!
I'm just starting out.. so this video for me is magnificent
Great stuff. Nice models.
you have an amazing collection man i subbed you and thanks for all the free education im looking to get my feet wet in this side of the hobby
Great advices !
Great stuff thanks man 👍
Nice collection!! Some day I may get into these... some day lol
Great very interested especially in the jagtiger
Thanks for the info I'm 59 years old and bored to heck and have been looking at buying a take that shoots bb's. I noticed amazon sells tanks but sort of confused as what to buy.I don't want junk but don't want to spend tons on it either. Great looking tank's trying to make my mind up with them. Great info review my friend thank you.
Call Imex at 1-800-458-5785 and ask for Erik Edwards. Tell him I sent ya. He'll be able to set you up with something nice that's within your budget. You can see their catalog if you search Imex or Taigen Tanks.
Thanks lots Gary. I appreciate your help. I will check it.
Thanks for the great video!
I had one of these a few years back, and they are a lot of fun, one of the only problems i had with them is the battery time, 20 minutes of time then you have to charge up again, be good if they lasted up to an hour, would love to get another one and the only thing that puts me off is the battery time..
With modern battery tech that's easy to do. A 5000 mah lipo will run my heaviest tank for over an hour, and you can get batteries the same size with as much as 10,000 mah, which would run my Tiger One for almost two hours. If you're not comfortable with lipos, you can also now get nimh batteries with up to as much as 8,000 mah (that's the biggest I've seen, but higher mah may be available). Spare batteries are cheap and it's an easy thing to swap batteries when one runs out of juice. So if battery life is all that's keeping you from enjoying this wonderful hobby, go ahead and buy a tank!! ;)
Hi Gary,
First of all can I say how useful your video is to me as an RC tank newbie who is yet to buy the first model.
I am thinking all metal with IR or as a minimum metal tracks / gears / lower hull but don’t know which way to go with it as in which would be the best one to go for.
Can you offer any advice?
Also how many do you have in your collection?
Regards and best wishes from the UK.
Wow just awesome.
Well, another thing is... When your RC group takes their sooper dooper custom 4x4 trucks offroad, and they get stuck, your tank can literally crawl through mud like a salamander... So then, they all want an RC tank too. 👍😄
Would you prefer a completely metal tank or does it come with more problems to solve?
I've seen a full Metall Maus Panzer and wondering if it's better than platic or does it make it harder to run du to it's wight?
I just ordered an airsoft henglong T90 Russian tank, do you know where I can get a laser scope that will shine a red dot on it's target. Something that is not infrared something that can be seen with the naked eye?
Nice video Gary.
Very informative
He helped me alot
Thanks I'm planning on getting a tiger 1
Hi Just wondering if you ever tried to use one of your tanks to be a rafter explorer? ever try to stick a fpv on it along with some decent lighting to see whats going on above your ceiling?
How hard or easy would it be to fit something like that and Would one of those be able to climb the various obstacles up there?
Nice collection and good info.... I am a newbe. Just ordered a late war tiger from Taigen.
Gary I will keep my tiger 1 until I can get it fixed ... don't want to give it up
what is the mushroom called for the tank
Who made the tiger 1 that had just the barrel recoil.
thanks man I'm planning to get a Heng long Sherman
very good video, thx !
What is the fastest and best climbing tank?
Congratulations you have a new subscriber been wanting to get an RC tank for a long time I build 135th scale models German tanks the thing is where I live they do not have tank battles they tried to get one together and only 3 people showed up
I own one i can say they work over hour and if u want it to be realistic dont turn on smoke generators because they will make ur tank look like this A giant metal monster with a sound of a mosqitoe
Do you also own money trees?
I'm afraid this is not a poor man's hobby. Sorry.
Alan Hsu i thought legos were expensive
@ SpudsTheBinky
It is amazing how much money is left at the end of the month if you haven't got an S/O spending it for you.
@Lone Wolf LMAO
@Lone Wolf no , them old guys worked their entire lives and is living with a decent amount of money till they're gone. You gotta work for it , money don't grow on trees
Hi from the UK! love your channel very informative! I have a Taigen IR tiger 1 with a clark TK 22 board fitted. I am considering buying a Sherman to IR battle the tiger, however torro and taigen IR Sherman's in the uk seem crazy expensive. I was wondering what your thoughts are on the Henglong Sherman with metal tracks and gears, and how easy/practical it would be to convert from a bb to an IR tank? I would also wish to install barrel flash and recoil. Recoil units for the Sherman don't seem to be available in the uk, unless pre-fitted to IR ready Shermans, any thoughts would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance, and hope my question makes sense?
Hi, sorry for the delay. I assume you'll put another TK22 in the Sherman, which is what I have in mine and you already have in your tiger. The HL Sherman is decent, and you may be able to get an IR ready Turret for it. I have the Imex/Taigen Sherman and I think it's well worth the extra money. Very robust tank, and there are videos of it here on this channel. If you do go HL, converting airsoft to IR can be done, and it's not all that difficult, you just have to gather the plug in pieces. You could probably use a lot of the IR stuff from an IR Panzer III. I think your best bet would be to look for an IR Sherman turret, but I don't know if the Taigen turret is interchangeable with the HL turret. Hope that helps.
They or great fun. IV a few and it's additive.
what brand would be good for starters but cheap
I got a question I got a Pershing tank I've repainted it and the brand is HENG LONG so is good HENG long for play with others tanks ?
Does it shoot BBs? It should, since I don't think HL ever made an IR Pershing. To battle against other tanks you'd have to convert it to IR.
hi Gary,
I am thinking of getting a tank. Which one would you recommend: the tamiya kv-1 or the tamiya king tiger? thank you!
I've never built a tamiya, but I've always preferred the King Tiger. It will also be easier to find reference material for a KT.
Where did u get the panzerbefalshwagen 1
Gary I bought a pen long RC tiger one but my headlights went out after I charge the battery
I assume you live in the USA. I have 7 airsoft tanks, the problem is in Canada we are only allowed 5 rfs on our 24 hertz. Kind of screws up battles. Not familiar with the infra red tanks. How many frequencies can you have? I was watching a battle on utube and their seemed to be a lot of tanks running. You gave a good description of how they work.
Do you know where to get a converter for the Heng Long charger that fits North American outlets?
Sorry, I don't, but I highly recommend you throw that wall charger in the trash and get a decent battery charger. Let me know if you need help finding one. Imex is a good place to look.
"So your thinking about buying an rc tank". Me with five of them, YES!
hey Gary I have ah questions for 1/24 scale rc tanks
can the motor be converted to brushless just like electric rc trucks and aircraft that are commonly installed over brushed motors?
I know a guy that did it (Imex-Erik at Imex Model Company) but it's very uncommon. You will have a very fast tank, though. :)
I have a hedge long Jagd Panther, and now want to upgrade it. whats the first thing I should go for? suspension and tracks? im not looking for IR at this moment, maybe in the future when I have friends with tanks too
I always do the gearboxes first. If it still has plastic or pot-metal gears and you add metal tracks and sprockets the gears won't last long. I always go for the ball bearing gearboxes from Imex/Taigen in Florida.
if I buy a older 27 mHz heng long tank airsoft without smoke or sound can I install those options?
Yes, you can. You have lots of options for electronics and functions if you're willing to upgrade.
i am getting the jagdpanther for Christmas msrp price is 320 dallers and the sale price is 280 cant wait for it to come on in for Christmas
I'm a 32 year old, and I find this satisfying. Lol. The child in me
Where did you bought the Opel Blitz truck, is it rc ?, you have an awesome collection . Thanks for any feedback
Hi Gary, Thank you for taking the time to respond. I think I may go for the Torro IR Sherman, as it seems to be the only IR Sherman available in the UK, it looks to be almost the same as the Taigen model? Do you know of any differences? Thanks again!
I didn't know Torro made a Sherman. Can you post a link to the one you're looking at? Then I can tell you if it's similar to the Taigen (I have one of those) or uses any or the same parts. Imex, Torro and Taigen are all connected somehow. Kind of a loose alliance, I guess you might say.
This is the Imex/Taigen IR Sherman
www.imex-model.com/product/TAG13045/Taigen-Sherman-M4A3-75mm-%28Metal-Edition%29-Infrared-2.4GHz-RTR-RC-Tank-1-16th-Scale.html?cid=88
They're in Florida, but they ship worldwide (if you can afford international shipping rates!).
thanks!
Will like to know wich is the best full metal tiger tank to purchase?
IMO, the Imex/Taigen Tiger One is the best R|TR tiger out there.
Great tanks
Since I don’t have the money I get a regular tank model kit and buy a cheap RC set and cut a hole at the bottom to make the bigger tank move
Okay question, for a beginner would the taigen metal airsoft T-34/85 be good and if yes could i put a small cam on it so i could control it at my desk when it is moving around / i'm downstairs and i can control it upstairs via looking at my pc(sorry if i worded that terribly) PS out of all reviews i saw yours was the best.Edit Is the IS/JS better which should i get
Fist, IS and JS are the same thing. JS for Joseph Stalin, which is Ivan Stalin in Russian, hence the IS. The T-34 would be a fine first tank, very dependable and solid. The only thing I don't like about the T-34 is the small battery size. The JS-2 holds a full size bat and that leads to many more options. If your budget allows I would get the JS-2. Next, we call it FPV, for First Person View, and I've put cameras on many trucks and tanks. As for watching it on your PC, that all depends on the system you go with. I usually set up for goggles or a TX mounted screen, but there are systems with bluetooth that have endless possibilities.
@@garyhoff2178 thanks
Where did you get the half track from?
If I'm looking at a 1/16 heng long tiger with the bb shooter, it should still have the IR kit mounted,as well, most of the time, right? Too bad infrared doesn't sense armor thickness or angle of attack, or different modules like track hits or turret hits. The RC world could take a hint from World of Tanks
No, the Airsoft Tanks do not have the IR emitter and the base for the Apple installed. Heng Long got out of the RC tank game so now taigen is pretty much the only game in town, besides of course, Tamiya.
@@garyhoff2178 could I add the apple mount and IR stuff myself once I have a tank?
Yes, you can, and if you're building a tamiya compatible tank you can use the tamiya or impact apple and base, and you'll want to sink your emitter 9mm deep in a 6mm tube, as that's a requirement for most club battles, like they have at Danville.
i need to buy one
david galeski have you find
hey +Garry Hoff can you give me an advice for a cheap fun rc tank? The thing is that i want to start on this hobby but want a model wich can be modified or if it breaks i can fix it or change it without that much pain to my pocket. Have any sugestions?
Yes, I do have a suggestion, the Heng Long Tauch panzer III. Here's a video explaining why
czcams.com/video/cFU5J2vVFks/video.html
I made this video almost two years ago and it's still true. One of the best little tanks I have.
+Gary Hoff thanx a lot, I think im gonna buy one when i save the money
I'm interested in RC tanks, but I'd like to find a T-55 RC tank and I'm having trouble... Does anyone know where I can find one?
Right now, as far as I know, the only T-55 is the Hooben and that's a kit, much like a Tamiya but not quite in the same league for quality. Some intermediate to advanced modelling skills are necessary for the Hooben. Here's a link, but be advised that Hooben has hit or miss reputation for customer satisfaction. If you buy from them, I advise you to make sure you're protected, like by using paypal to pay them.

thanks for a simple but informative intro to this hobby. been browsing for about 2 weeks now and i am seeing unbelievable models and awesome shows in europe. btw, i play airsoft and am now considering a return to modelling again. only this time, RC tanks. what would be the best entry level RC tank for me? brand and cost-wise? hope i find a local hobby club here.
Hobby clubs all depend on where you live. In the U.S. there are good clubs around and even more in the UK. If you've never owned an RC tank you might want to look at this video czcams.com/video/cFU5J2vVFks/video.html They've gone up a bit, but you can still get the Tauschpanzer here www.ebay.com/itm/2-4Ghz-1-16-German-Tauch-Panzer-III-Turret-RC-Battle-Tank-/202277139409?hash=item2f18a833d1 I've never used that seller before so you might want to shop around. You can also get a tiger or Pershing for a good price, ebay is a good place to start.
thanks Gary! will check them out.
just checked that seller.... they "may not ship to the philippines".... hhmmmm.... will check other options...
Que gran coleccion
Is the heng long m26 parishable a hobby grade?
All the Heng Long tanks are what we call toy-grade. They can be upgraded to hobby-grade with an aftermarket control board and a decent radio/transmitter. The Heng long M26 is a good tank to start with and is easily up-gradable. If you can afford it, Tamiya makes an M-26 kit that's hobby grade from the start, but it's rather expensive and you still need to buy a radio and receiver.
Are there entry level/starter airsoft tanks under $100 that you could recommend? My son is very interested and can only spend $100 (says Mom who wants to make sure he's really interested before spending more). Thanks for any help. We enjoyed your video and found it very helpful.
Checking interest levels first is a great idea that I recommend all the time and there's an ebay seller called toolsempire that offers this M-26 at a great price with the latest stock electronics: www.ebay.com/itm/1-16-2-4G-RC-US-M26-Pershing-Battle-Tank-w-Smoke-Sound-Radio-Remote-Control-/201695444929 and if he wants a German tank I recommend the Tauchpanzer, but I haven't dealt with this seller (but ebay has great buyer protection) www.ebay.com/itm/Heng-Long-1-16-2-4G-3849-1-Tauch-Panzer-III-Ausf-H-RC-Battle-Tank-/282778795409
Thanks for mentioning the UK separate to Europe.
very important point haha
Hello Jerry.
I am looking for a large scale quality tank.
I've already had the 1/16th scale Tamiya which you build and which I enjoyed making.
I'm looking for a much larger scale and they are hard to find.
I live in Alberta Canada.
1/8th scale would be spectacular but perhaps I cannot be too fussy.
I do realize I can get get 1/4 scale which is fantastic but they're from a foreign company and the Co.seem wishy washy.
What would you recommend?
Thanks.
Mike.
1st, it's Gary, not Jerry. 1/6 scale and larger tanks are a completely different animal, and if you think these little 1/16 tanks are expensive, you ain't seen nothin' yet. A quality 1/6 scale Tiger One can soak up 8 or 9 grand before it's complete. Try armortek, field of armor and mark1 tanks for large scale. These guys are good, and can put together a kit for you in a couple of weeks, or a complete tank if you want, you'll have to email them for more info. I've been thinking about the ABS Panther G, and I expect that will take a budget of over $5,000 once it's fully equipped with paintball cannon and sound system.

Thanks Harry.
I appreciate all your knowledge.
Mike
Danville VA?... Huh that's funny because I've seen the battlefield before in a Museum called the AAF Tank musuem
That's it. The AAF Tank Museum in Danville, Virginia.
I own a HL tiger 1 and i don,t like the bb gun, i want the recoil gun with flash, no infrared also. what to buy and where? sry english is not my native languash , i hope you understand .
You need the infrared turret. That's the only one that has recoil and muzzle flash, but don't worry about the IR part because you just won't use it. I know another RC Tanker that always buys IR tanks because he doesn't like the BB and he wants the recoil and flash. The easiest way to fix your tiger would be to just swap out the turret and repaint. They have the whole turret here, but you might find it cheaper if you shop around, and if you want to just swap the parts you might be able to find them for even less.

I just bought a 1/16 leopard tank. It shoots pellets and also can do the tank battle. I wonder what's better. The red or blue moter.
The blue motor is better
@@raymondkisner9240 I now have 2 leopard A-6 tank's, and 1 m1A1 tank. I have blue motor in both leopard tanks. I even replaced the speaker with a louder better sound.
Hi sir, i have an rc tank in which i tried putting an engin sound simulator. But it did not work instead i lost the cannon shot sound effect that was in default with my tank. Do you have any advise to have it fixed? Its a tank household brand by the way.
Thank you in advance.
Hard to say without knowing exactly what tank you have, but I would suggest upgrading to an aftermarket board like the Clark or the IBU. Both have excellent sound sets for engine and all secondary sounds like cannon and machine gun.
@@garyhoff2178 thank you for the suggestion. Appreciate it.👍
