I won a £500 shopping spree at 40k open day in november 2016, I immidiately picked up a Salamanders army. They are now my favorite army both in the Lore and on the table top, and with my flatmate playing Night Lords they became very powerful in 30k!
Instead of a praetor, I would choose the salamanders chaplin Nomus as the warlord. He has +2 strength ap2 armourbane concussive weapon. And he has eternal warrior. A bargain at 215 points.
Two points on that; 1) as a beginner list, I try to stay away from special characters and teach players the fundamental statline of common units. 2) in Australia we play narrative so rarely use the characters from FW as they don't tell OUR story, they tell Forge World's
felix crab You could always give him a power fist and the cloak to give him eternal warrior. Not quite as good as the imperial fists solerite gauntlet (ignores specialist weapon rule), but still a decent choice.
Thanks for the video, been looking forward to this one! Been looking into a Salamanders zone mortalis army, already own 10 mkiv despoilers and a mkiv captain left over from a previous project. Will probably get the support cadre and thanks to your video that finecast character.
A very nice beginners list there sir. If i may add an opinion or 12... A Caestus assault ram is probably a better choice for the army over a storm eagle(more expensive points wise but), its perfect for either Pyroclasts or support squads with meltas (yes they are expensive but the R.o.W makes all melta guns master-crafted - so imo worth it) Like you said Leviathans are probably not totally worth the points investment because of the lack of phosphex weaponry, but also never overlook those pesky Laser Destroyer Vindicators, they are just beautiful long range support, just remember to give them extra armour & machine spirit so you can move/shoot regardless of shaken or stunned (most frustrating things to deal with) With the R.o.W giving all units move through cover, and no need for armoured ceramite on vehicles (5+ invul against melta, volkite, flamer, plasma, and melta bombs!) its almost a no brainer to take it. This legion is very points heavy, so it will normally be smaller in size, I have found the best way to succeed with it is trial and error,.Transport vehicles are a must and I always love to bring the "party bus" (mastodon) out in bigger points games though. There is nothing more satisfying than watching someone try and crack it open before a metric fuck ton of points end up on their doorstep (all armed with thunderhammers) ;) I can also confirm the praetor with a mantle of eldar drake, dragonscale storm shield and master-crafted paragon blade is just plain dirty. I'm just trying to find a way to take him on a bike or jetbike so i can make even less friends. Keep up the good work buddy :)
The Caestus is something I've off-handedly mentioned n several episodes, it isn't in production and hasn't been for months, so I haven't been including it! Also, Laser destroyers are overpriced for what they do next to Quad mortars (great medium AT) and Gravition (great AT in general). I did mention early in the video hwo they work best with their Rite of War, so I'm glad to see you agree with me on that and on the dirty Praetor haha
sorry i missed the caestus bit, I doubt it will be missing for too long :) While quad launchers are pretty good my elite slots are filled with other things that are a higher priority imo. So i take the vindi as a fire support (it does pretty well - not bad at shooting fliers out of the sky, on many occasions when overcharging heh all them 6s - and normally removes a tank per turn quite comfortably.) We both know grav weapons are broken in HH. They are ridiculous. Almost as bs as phophex haha I have found it difficult to find a different rite of war that works, the second salamander one is terrible, and the drop pod one is so limiting on which vehicles you can take. Makes it hard to find a solid balance.
Hey Macca, what do you think about replacing the Storm Eagle for a Caestus Assault Ram? I just recently happened to get my hands on one (on the way) and was thinking of using it as a delivery system for the Firedrakes.
how on earth did you manage to get a Caestus ??? 0_0 That's an awesome idea!! I was planning to do the same with firedrakes (it's also really fluffy and works great with the covenant of fire rite of war)
Hey Maccabees, been waiting a while for this, good to finally see it! Damn 18th! Could be wrong but I thought the Promethean Pipe Relay wasn't an option in the new red book? Also good catch with Vulkan. Have an old metal one but never thought about using him for Heresy.
Are you sure you can take a drop pod without any ROW ? If you go for the drop pod route for 30K it's all or nothing x) Unless I miss something, drop pod == Orbital assault or specific ROW (and I don't think Salamanders have a drop pod ROW) which means no preds and dread drop pod (sold out for the moment until the new version comes again) for leviathan and dreadclaw for contemptor so a lot more specific
My wording was along the lines of "consider using drop pods if you are able; aka use a rite of war" or "if unable to use a dreadclaw" I'm all over this one!
He's just chaplain with crozius & bolt pistol, slapping shield on BaC chaplain wouldn't be so hard. And he's a beast, especially against terminators and other heavy hitting elite units. Not by mauling them, but exploding into their faces. While hit with str>4 and ap2 (fists, paragon blades, hammers etc) he has 3++ witch can be rerolled because of his psychic powers. Even if he dies, his burning halo hit every model in base contact with him at s4 for each inv passed. Mine survived multiple combat phases vs buffed Lorgar. How many praetors can say that? And with +2S maul he can even force some saves.
Hey mate, I'm pretty new to 30k and can't find the answer to this elsewhere: Would Promethean Gift apply to Combi-Flamers? My local group can't seem to decide....

Luke Playford grats, I never win any cool contest like that
Amazing lime 3 free units, would love to win that
How did you pay for the other 70% of the army?
Anyone else ever feel like they never have enough points in a salamanders list?
Vulkan He'Stan's head is a separate piece, so using him as the base for a 30k Praetor is even easier :)

Who likes special characters though? Its much more fun to run your own characters
Connor Forsyth It’s only a game.

i dont really know what to do with my praetor tbh, the maths on it seem bad, shame to waste such a great model

Into the fires of battle, unto the anvil of war!

Very enjoyable. Thank you for sharing ~ Will
Thanks Macca i love you
I've been considering the jetbike heavy option, feels like a good investment in CoF since it would mastercraft their multimeltas
Salamanders best rite of war is covenant of Fire which PREVENTS you from using drop pods.
Aw yeah, its my boys!
i know you don't put 3rd party stuff in your videos, but i personally prefer the kromlech heavy flamers over the fw ones.
I have used 3rd party in dire situations for these videos, but it's not too common.
Nice video! Would you consider reviewing the Horus Heresy novels someday?
Maybe, but there's quite a few (mainly the anthologies) which I haven't read.
A very nice beginners list there sir.

Would salamanders have access to mark 5 armour?

New red book may have superseded it, but I wouldn't complain if someone used one in a game, seems fluffy to me.
Yeah, I didn’t see it. What book is it in?
I love these guys but I am hesitant about the Heresy. I have Mark III marines ready to go. I love Vulkan.

There was the New special characer in Book 6 as well
No mini, doesn't count ;)

Yes. Because the separate part is “a flamer”
macca you gonna do mechanicum and solar auxillia
Yes, I mentioned it at the end of the last video (Word Bearers) what the plan is going forward.
The Outer Circle thanks appreciate it
