    1. You can get free pre-divided boxes from the liquor store.
    2. The last thing to put on your truck is your mattress and bed frame with a box of sheets. The first thing you do when you get to the new place is put your bed together and make it with sheets and blankets. At the end of the day you will be exhausted, the last thing you want to do is have to put your bed together before you can go to sleep!

    Additions:
    1. Nice for people helping you move: Make sure there is toilet paper, hand soap and a hand towel in the bathroom at both places (Old & new) for everyone to use as well as water bottles in the fridge and granola bars at both.
    2. Clean the new place before you move in if you can so you move into a clean, ready space.
    3. Create a spreadsheet for yourself so you know what’s in each box

All plates are to be packed up and down in the box and not flat because if the box is dropped your plates will break. Professional packed showed me....and today I have moved more than 10 times across the country. Have a book to write what's in the box with a number on box. Boxes are stollen when things are shown on boxes. With a number on box ...you know if a box is missing.

  • @barbarianatgate2000
    @barbarianatgate2000 Před 4 lety +7

We moved twice within 11 months. One thing I can recommend if you can is to place furniture first. Then take all boxes that are not essential and store them in basement or climate controlled garage. This way, you aren't sitting in a mountain of boxes and feeling stressed about how much there is to unpack before you can feel comfortable. Store the boxes grouped by room, and then unpack 1 room at a time. At the end of a long day, trying to relax among that much clutter will be tough. But, sitting down in your comfortable living room with all the boxes out of view makes it much easier mentally speaking.

  • @vkents1714

Pro tip! If you have lots of items and will keep them contained, DO NOT USE CARDBOARD BOXES. Buy large plastic containers. Cardboard boxes can be destroyed in floods, eaten by pests, or just eventually weaken/disintegrate in time. Use plastic containers instead, they're perfect and can be used over and over again!
I moved a fair number of times in my life and the cardboard boxes were always annoying. Going to multiple different places and asking for boxes so many times becomes a hassle, so instead I just went to my depot and bought like 50 large containers, numbered them, listed the contents, and that shit went a lot smoother. Goodluck packing everyone! Preserve your sanity.

We downsized from 1400 ft to 750 ft a year ago and we are in our 70's. So you can imagine all the purging we did on BOTH ends. Believe it or not we had over 100 boxes. It was an amazing feat. My best suggestion is to make sure the first thing you do when you get to the new place is to get your bed all set up and dressed. That way you have it ready so you can drop right into it when need be. Good luck. Can't wait to see your new home......

We did kind of the opposite for our dog, but it worked out. He gets really stressed with packing so we sent him to his daycare/boarding for a few days while we did the major packing. That way he just enjoyed daycare and wasn't worried about our house being turned inside out. We did our in town move without him and set up all his blankets/toys/etc so that when he got to his new home it was already full of familiar smells. Definitely DON'T wash your pet blankets before moving! Let the smell get into the new home.

I disagree with washing everything before you move. In my experience everything gets dusty, dirty, everything is touched by different people, and spills happen along the way. It’s just inevitable. Everything will get dirty. Just wash afterwards. The double work is really not worth it.

I’ve moved 3 times in the last 5 years and am planning for our next move which is happening the day after Christmas! So, I definitely feel like an expert. We are hoping the next place is a keeper. We are downsizing and upgrading, so lots and lots of purging to fit into a smaller space. I start packing super early, a month early, otherwise I feel very overwhelmed. The plate and glasses boxes are worth the slight splurge. We also had boxes stolen the first time we moved and used moving helpers. They stole my husbands video games. So, the last two moves I started a system where instead of writing what’s in the box, I number the boxes and keep a list for myself of what is in each box. Then I just write on the top of the box what room it is going to.

Pack a first night box. Have it full of things you'll need the first night and morning like a shower curtain and soap, bedding, toilet paper, tooth brush, charger, medication, coffee pot, coffee, and cups, pet stuff, child stuff, pajamas and next day's cloths, etc. Then pack that in your car so you know where it is. Happy moving and sleeping!

I'm moving in two weeks and thought I should revisit this one again! I have numbered all my boxes as I pack them and then in my bullet journal I am listing what is in each box. I put basic info on the box like bakeware or books and whether it's fragile or not. This is my 12th move and I've learned a lot on the way. Getting started with the packing a month or two ahead takes the pressure off near the end. I am also cleaning as I go so that I will just have one final wipe down of floors and bathroom to do. I plan on being finished all the packing 3 or 4 days before the actual move. This time I am definitely purging as I pack. I don't want to have to pack and unpack things I no longer want or need. I love the idea of the coloured tape on the boxes. I will zone my new place and have a colour for each zone. Great tip about the small and large box packing! I have done that this time and have small boxes for books and heavy things. Wish me luck!

If you are using a moving service, rather than write the contents of each box on the box itself, number them and write the contents on a corresponding list of each box by number. Especially good for valuables that could go missing during a busy move. You can also get more detail this way, which helps if you're looking for a specific item. I used this method last time we moved three years ago when we had over 600 boxes. It was a lifesaver. Congrats on your new house! ~ Lisa

I would suggest hitting the grocery store for a cooler(if you don't have one), healthier snacks/meals, a case of or a couple gallons of water and a bag of ice. Doing this has prevented me from wasting money on fast food or at convenience stores, and keeps the road trip moving with less stops. This way you can have a little extra money left over to tip your pro movers or buy your amateur movers(aka fam and buds) pizzas and drinks, lol! Good luck with the move! ♡

Lots if boxes & tape. You can always return boxes to Home Depot. Try to fill all your boxes. Lots if lots of bubble wrap. If you use newspaper you will have to wash your dishes and glasses when you are unpacking. It is essential to pack like your going away for w week to 2 weeks. Hire guys to fill your pods if that is the way your going. You should write what it is on the packing tape, this way you may be able to reuse that box for a while. Love your ideas. It has been 22 years since I moved. I furnished it and will be selling all furniture. Find a company to shred your personal paperwork before moving. I wish you had tips for garages.. 💚💚good luck in your new home

We moved abroad a year ago and are moving back in two months, gives me shivers when I think about packing and unpacking everything 😩 Great tip if you move abroad - number your boxes and write down a list of what’s in them, when you get to the destination and the delivery man arrives- cross out the numbers in your list- this way you make sure no boxes were lost in transit ( trust me , we lost one and were able to identify it on the spot )

UHaul has sets of boxes that they ship to your house; you pick apartment, 1-2 bedroom house, etc and they give you a nice mix. Of course most people will need to customize the list and that's easy to do when ordering. Includes boxes for books, china/glasses, and electronics.

When asking for free boxes at the grocery stores/Costco/Walmart, ask specifically for apple boxes. They are very sturdy & have a spot for handles that makes them easy to carry. Plus they are a nice size, not too big so you can start packing them ahead of time & store them without taking up too much space. We started looking about a year before we bought our house so we bought plastic storage bins when they were on sale. Then when items would go on sale that we would need for the new house that we didn’t already have, we would purchase them & store them. Things like linens for the spare bedrooms (that we didn’t have in our apartment), towels & accessories for the guest bathroom etc... This saved us money in the long run because we bought on sale & we bought over a year instead of having to buy all at once when we moved in. I got really lucky, I found a designer queen comforter set on clearance originally $210 for only $54! You don’t have to buy everything all at once but most of the necessities we bought early & on sale. It gave us some breathing room when we moved in. We still have the plastic bins 12 years later. They hold all our seasonal stuff now. Some of the extras we sold at a yard sale.

  • @tooblessedtobestressed9715

My "pro-tip" is to get fry boxes from McDonald's. They wrap their fries in plastic bags inside the cardboard boxes so when they are emptied and flattened - they are just as clean and dry as the ones you might want to purchase. Call the store and ask them to save you fry boxes over a weekend or a few days and then go and pick them up. Asking multiple McDonald's locations to save them & pickup on the same day might even give you all the boxes you need in one go (depending on how many you need and which days you ask - obviously weekends are better. Right now, they are giving away free fries after a Raptors game win so they are going through extra fry boxes if you're needing them for an upcoming move. Heather

I luv the idea of marking boxes with different colored tapes. Also I'd put each shoe in a grocery plastic bag before putting them in luggages or boxes. Also I'd put clothes or clean towels in clean garbage bags before putting them in boxes incase boxes get wet your things will stay clean and dry. I bought and saved home depot boxes in the storage closet for the next move.

Hi, we moved from a large 3bedroom house 2 years ago into our forever home, a small 2bedroom bungalow. Our children had both grown and flown. Oh my goodness. I needed this video back then, we still have boxes we haven’t unpacked in our loft, and in our summerhouse (that we haven’t been able to use yet). I so need to get sorted out, but it’s been so long now, and just the thought of it all makes me sad, because I did a big unboxing a few weeks ago, and threw away over 30 years of diary’s and holiday journals. At the time I was so happy to be rid of such a big heavy box, but soon after I felt so very sad, I intended to read all those books in old age to keep my mind active, and I’ve always written a lot each day, now all those memories have gone. So please don’t throw away until your 100% sure. I will get around to all the rest of it soon I hope.xxxxxx

Important tip!! ALWAYS keep personal documents with you. My daughter was moving from California to Tennessee. They loaded up a small trailer with their belongings, went to bed for 6 hours, got up and went outside to find their truck and trailer were stolen. Everything they owned GONE. Luckily they kept personal documents in their over night bag. The truck was found in the country, stripped clean. The trailer was found along side the freeway, homeless people were inside grabbing what they could before police came. They even took all the dog food! My daughter and son in law have been in Tennessee for over a month now, slowly buying things for their new home. But they are safe and happy, and that’s what we feel is more important right now.

My whole family haved lived in our ancestral country home for as long as I know, since the time my great great grandfather built the house. Even when I was youngs I had a big family with uncles and aunts, but most of them have passed away without any children, so now it's just me and a cousin sister. The sister's married and moved to another city, then to the US. I'm the only one left in the house along with a few help and a few dogs.

The best moving boxes I ever got were McDonald's French Fry boxes. They were a good small/medium size, extra thick cardboard. I had to go daily to pick them up without fail so that they would save them for me. They didn't have a lot of extra space to store them, so it was daily or they would quit saving them.
