It is only a matter of time before the next carriage horse collapses. We want to be ready. We want to open a Gentle Barn in New York City, offer a place of rehabilitation and retirement for carriage horses, and work with authorities to bring electric carriages to Manhattan.
The Gentle Barn is a non profit animal sanctuary with locations in Los Angeles, CA, Nashville, TN, and St. Louis, MO. We rescue neglected and traumatized animals from all circumstances, we rehabilitate them, and when they're ready we partner with them to heal people with the same stories of trauma. We rescue cows, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys, peacocks, emus, llamas, donkeys, and more. Our mission is to show people the love and magic of animals by sharing their stories and how living a gentle life can help heal animals, humans, and the world.

We had these in Salt lake city. Finally stopped carriage horses there.
They are not extremist, no biased prioritizing of just animals, which only helps to cause greater division. They also consider fellow human beings and their livelihoods, even considering electric carriages. I'm just so impressed by Ellie and Jay as human beings, they bring together all beings , they don't villainize anyone, they just trying to spread love. I look up to them so much on how to be a better human being. I wish them many many blessed years to continue their essential work for as long as possible. The world need more humans like these two. I want to be part of that group. ❤
Thank you for speaking on this issue. I still see a lot people thinking taking carriage rides is a fun and romantic activity. They don't realize that they are directly supporting the abuse and neglect of hundreds upon thousands of animals who can think and feel. We need more places like yours. The thing is why is is abusive?
There was a small time carriage ride dude here in my town that operated on the weekends and for only like 6 hours, maybe 8 on Saturday and his horse is healthy and spends most of his time at home in his fields.
Why do they have to push the horses like they do? The answer is they don’t. I have zero sympathy for the drivers. They don’t have to make their horses go through long and grueling hours through the city.
Not to mention where these horses live. It’s terrible and no one should subject their animals to this. I usually have sympathy for everyone but they really choose to make more profit over the well being of the animals that make that profit.
I am so happy to see this video! These horses go through hell! I live in Quebec and I started a page to try and raise awareness for the plight of these poor animals here in Quebec. They are treated so badly. Unfortunately my French is so bad, that I had a lot of abuse that the page was in English, so I am doing my best to learn French.

French Canadian and standard French do have slight differences in vocabulary, make sure to keep an eye on that, I speak French but wanted to learn French Canadian and you’d be surprised the differences in vocabulary and formalities that change. But obviously a lot is the same as well.
I wish you would grab the carriage horses down in Charleston SC. It was awful when we loves down there. They do not take care of those horses. My wife, and I would yell “horses abuse” every time one passed us by. We hated to see those horses worked so hard in the summers there. It’s awful.

I’ve always wanted to start my own rescue resort for animals, but now I’m strapped for cash as a single mother of three with a jewelry business. Life’s journey can be quiet different than expected, but you guys are making the most of it and I absolutely adore you for it.

Such a beautiful idea to use electric carriages. So the horses will get a chance to get out of this nightmare and hopefully every carriage driver will be motivated by this challenge and change 💖
Could the Electric Carriages be fitted with Electric Robotic Hoarse? Maybe even have Steampunk Automated Hourses. That would look cool and bring in more tourism, but would help horses as well.

This is an amazing idea to have all horse carriages replaced by electric.
WE NEED YOUR HELP here in downtown Chattanooga, TN. They have 4-5 horses and carriages. They’re also in a brick building. They have them pulling the carriages almost everyday and during the hottest times. Please come here and save them !!!!!

Your work is amazing gentle barn! I hate all the animal cruelty in this world. I would be vegetarian if I could but I’m very picky eater so I need the protein😢. Keep up the great work you do saving these animals! My absolute favorite animal is horses and I try to do as much as I can to help them. When I grow up I want to have a rescue and rehabilitation farm like this that takes in neglected, abandoned, hurt, etc farm animals, mostly horses and also bring in people and kids who need mental and physical healing and have them work together with what each animal needs. Keep up the great work you do. I support you majorly!!

I was driving through amish farms in PA and saw so many horses pulling carriages on the side of the road, right next to driving cars. It made me so mad but i wonder if there’s any way that can be changed. It has to be a change in mindset & value.
So I live in Lancaster, PA & felt like I have to comment on this. The Amish still use horse & buggies to get around. They are not known for their caring treatment of animals. Alot have puppy mills & alot abuse their animals & horses. They will make the horses pull buggies on 90 degree days in the middle of summer & not even think about giving them water. The Target where alot of Amish go built a shelter just to help keep the horses out of the sun & provide water & still there are incidents where a few horses have collapsed there & some have went down on roads as they're pulling. They hook them up to buggies that are too heavy. People complain but they are protected because of their religion. They are treated differently alot because they are Amish & get away with things they shouldn't because of that. Just to clarify for people who will hate me for this comment, there are plenty of Amish who are very nice & are nice to their animals. But there is alot of work that needs done.

This was so heart breaking and enraging. It could so easily be done right, but noooo profit first. There are horses and breeds that would enjoy the work, would. But they never get the change, they’re worked bone tired and in the wrong conditions. In San Antonio it’s a similar program but not in the heat but the horses uses are not the right breeds, it’s hard on them. They’re often underweight. I hate it. Something that could be easily be good are used to harm.
The cruelty needs to stop!!!! It's time to shut down the carriage/horse business!!!!! Thank God for you for rescuing all those beautiful animals. ❤❤❤❤
In the clip of the horse being doused in water I couldn't help but noticed that they (the horse) were very thin. You could see their ribs and their hips. It's really sad seeing that sort of thing.

Wish we had a gentle barn where i live, i struggle a lot with anxiety and depression and I love cows so much 🥺 it would have helped so much if i could go to one frequently to pet cows and relax a bit

I hope society realizes more sooner than later that traditions like these need to stop and that it is ok to re-evaluate traditions.
I really hope that the horse drawn carriages end. This is a brilliant solution and for the owners of the businesses, probably cheaper. The animals never deserved this, this was an old practice in different times and maybe the horses were better cared for then, maybe not. But it’s time for it to end.
Omg I wish we had people like your company in Australia, we have petting zoos and farms people can visit but no hug a cow. I've done equine therapy before but you can't hug the horses just feed, groom and lead them on a leash.

I live in Louisiana. In Natchitoches, Louisiana you can go on carriage rides. Thing is, the carriage rides are only available during November and December, that's it. Rest of the year these horses relax and aren't working.
@animals are here with us, not for us It actually is because draft horses are work horses. They need to work.
I had a horse who was go-go-go all the time. Even if you weren't riding, you still had to get her on a halter and walk one mile in one direction then a mile back. She would start cribbing if she stayed in her pasture too long. One time I was late taking her out, she unlocked the gate herself and I followed her trail where she walked the same route, turned around, came back home and opened the gate to her favorite pasture.
There's a difference between working and over working. Even with working on a farm, we never work during certain times of the day due to the heat. The horses have to be treated exactly the same way.
What you guys do is amazing. I'm really wanting to be a part of something similar. I try very hard to speak out against every single "Big Lick" TWH practice that I encounter. My heart breaks to see animals hurting. Keep fighting the good fight!! 💕🐎🐷🐄

OMG YOU'RE EXPANDING INTO NEW YORK HELLOOO?!!! Now I can visit ❤ and of course the carriage horses can get the help they need! It truly is saddening. I live on the jersey shore and see carriage horses in one of the islands near me. Obviously not the same scale, but it hurts to see and not be able to do much of anything about... even when I was a kid I would just think "where exactly do they keep these horses when they're off duty?" A shame others don't think about that...its a fun old-fashioned experience or whatever but it is not at all worth hurting horses for. I'm definitely going to support you guys with this ❤💚🌱

It’s terrible that a beautiful horse gives their all for their whole life, Cold, Heat, Rain, attack from 9/11, lives in a disgusting old building only to be so badly broken by humans and die on the streets of the city. I think electric carriage is the only way of the future and would be a miracle for both the driver/owner and the horses that need a long well deserved retirement.
I watched a horse collapse in the street in 1987 and I've been signing petitions to end the carriage industry ever since. Wtf NYC? STOP CARRIAGE RIDES!!

UPDATE: SOLVED
I’m from South Carolina, and here we have a strict rule that our carriage horses cannot be out all day over 85 degree weather, and they get a nice bath, and a healthy meal after a long day of work. Then when they work for two weeks, they get three week breaks to graze.
So it's not all horrible there are some good ways to do it that gives me hope

While I do love privately owned carriages, I do believe that carriage industries especially in New York and India need to be banned. It’s safer for the horses if we simply do away with carriages used for public transport.
