- Welcome to Ålesund. This west coast city is one of Norway’s most distinctive and easily-recognisable places thanks to its spectacular natural setting and its eye-catching architecture. Read more: www.lifeinnorway.net/alesund-...
Art nouveau touches and a delightful pastel palette grace many of the downtown buildings, while the Sunnmøre Alps provide a dramatic backdrop to this city that’s surrounded by water.
As such, it’s perhaps no surprise to learn that the city is a popular cruise ship call, even in the winter. It’s also an important stop on the Norwegian coastal voyage operated by Hurtigruten and Havila. That means there’s always plenty of people in the city for a day looking for things to do.
So whether you’re visiting for just a few hours, a weekend break, or you’re basing yourself in the city as part of a longer road trip around the fjords, keep watching for my recommendations of what to see and do in Ålesund.

Sun Kil Moon....
The buildings look so close to the water! How often are the locals concerned about flooding? 😮
Hello, i'm borne and raised in Ålesund and there was a pub near the bridge in the center connecting the two islands which was flooded regularly when the tide was extreme due to storms etc. It was located in the basement in the building but for my 28 years living there I cant remember some big flooding problems in the city centre but the areas closest to the water could be wet from time to time :)
@@H3lmetHero Oh! Great to here it, I mean, of all the towns in Norway to be built like this yours would be best, right?
At least the buildings aren’t wooden like most Norwegian towns, the stone looks like it’d last longer
It's beautiful but it seems that a lot of the infrastructure might be threatened by sea level rise. 😕
