  • In this version of Resonator Talks we have talked with the experimental neofolk band, Heilung. They talk about several stuff like how their music have had an epiphanic effect on their listeners, how their music can be seen as an extreme brain massage, how they deliver a kind of amplified history and how it can be difficult travelling abroad with human bones.

I haven't heard this interview before and am glad I found it.
I love that they pointed out the tribal connection. I showed their Krigsgaldr video to a Native American girl at work (Seneca) and while we were watching it I mentioned that many people seem to forget that we were all tribal at some point in our past, for some it worked to remain that way, others had to change. She found it interesting and mentioned the similarities between her culture and what was being shown/performed.
I also agree with the cathartic effect mentioned. I found listening to Heilung to be a very deep, primal experience, my first thought was "turbulent introspection". It is at once mesmerizing, exciting and very primal. Beating drums = heart beats. We all have ancient knowledge in our beings, ancient memories in our DNA, some are just more connected / sensitive or aware of it than others. No matter where people are living now, they had ancestors who lived in a common place with knowledge / wisdom that spread across the globe as they dispersed and settled in new lands. We are all part of a very ancient human family with common beginnings.

About 2 years ago I first found Heilung, and when I listened to them it was as if I had found where I was suppose to be, as if I was listening to my peoples music, which is nowhere close to my actual nationality. Born First Nations I never really felt attached to the culture or the practices or the music even, but when I first heard Heilung (and also Wardurna) I felt like I was connected to the music and had this rush emotions and feelings that I was meant to be listening to this music and ever since I can't go a day without listening to it

Every couple of months I have an experience which may or may not involve a certain type of fungi, and Heilung is part of this. In fact, it never would have become a regular thing if I didn't see the live show on YT that first time. Now folks, I'm not gonna lie it's obviously an enjoyable experience, but I recently had a motorbike crash, lost my left leg in the process, and my personal life just fell apart quite quickly. I was recommended the mushrooms to kind of catch a break, and what is the first thing that comes up when I opened YT that day? Heilung, which I understand to mean 'Healing'. What a beautiful coincidence, the experience that day is something I will never forget, I'm getting a bit emotional just typing this, Heilung changed my life.

The first time I had heard heilung, I begin to find myself in a trance, or deep state of mind. Before I ever understood the history, I had a strong and vivid vision being deep in the trees and mist, toping a hill beating our drums. roman soldiers were divided in small groups and could almost taste their fear. I remember seeing young men beg, but I felt like I an animal without remorse, and ferocious in the moment but as I looked around I seen romans naked hanging in trees. At the time I thought I was predominantly Irish, after a DNA test I am almost 70% scandansvidan.

This album has put me through the deepest trances, has forced me to face my darkest demons, I’ve spoke with my Viking ancestors. My parent are from Norway , but I was born and grew up in America. I went to a psychic 2 years back and was told that I have ancestor that follows me and has been since I was a child to protect me and that he is dressed in traditional Viking attire. So I did a recent dna ancestry test and spent the big money to get the most accurate. I found out I am a direct blood line descendent of Ragnar Lothbrok. Continued down the line to find that the French in me come from Rollo

My most intense experience was, after I smoked a bit more weed than it was good for me. I laid in bed listening to Vapnatak. I remember the fear of death, the (probably false) safety behind a round shield, the crumble of leaves and the cracking of branches under my thin leather shoes, the tighter fearsome grip of an imaginary weapon (don't know which one, only it had a wooden shaft), the rain, fog between bald beeches, arrows coming out of nowhere, men falling while running towards the origin of the arrows.
I must have fallen asleep cause the next thing I remember is waking up under my roundshield which mysteriously appeared in my bed.
It was a so intense experience I remembered which is kinda hard with weed;)
