  • In this video we will be taking a look at how to easily execute a duck gybe! For many this move seems hard and slightly scary when progressing on from normal gybes. But I will let you in on a secret... it's actually easier than a normal gybe (in my opinion)!
This turn is smooth and allows you to easily come out of a turn with plenty of power, making it a good way to practice exiting your power gybes at full planing as well!
Some of the key points to follow for the duck gybe (or jibe) are:
    1. Speed as with all gybes.
    2. Wide grip. The more control the better!
    3. Rotate/duck the sail early on in the carve. The longer you wait the harder it gets!
    4. When you grab hold of the clew, make sure to pull it fast and aggressively across your face and to the other side.
(Extra tip: Make sure to keep the carve nice and smooth throughout! As with all carving moves.)
I hope this video helps you and gets you around those duck gybes as fast as possible. Feel free to share this with anyone you think might need it.
Most of all, have fun and see you on the water! :)

Watched this twice, went out, busted out 2 duck gybes in a row. Your tip about initiating early was my “missing link”. Excellent instructional video!! Thanks!! 🤙

Glad I could help! For many people that is the only mistake and yet it takes so long to figure out... probably because we are so used to the normal gybe!
      Have fun perfecting it :D

Hey man! Good to hear from you!
I did want to add more water action but I accidentally deleted all my duck jibe content so this is what we are left with!
The clip in the end is a POV of a duck gybe and the last clip a mast mount so you can see different aspects there.
The duck gybe is not really trainable properly when not planing so I dont have any of that footage for that reason!
I am sure you can find some duck gybes on my instagram :D
Next time I will put more water action :)

Once again, a clear explanation! Keep them coming more often please 🙏🏻. Would this gybe also work non-planing? Cheers, Rob

    • @kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
      @kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind  Před 3 lety

Thank you Rob!Ii am glad you like them!
The duck gybe as I am doing it here is a planing move simply because for the rotation of the sail to feel smooth you need to be moving at a certain speed around the corner.
If you do want to try them non-planing then I would recommend going slightly downwind and rotating the sail first and then going into a normal non-planing gybe.
So its more like a sail 180 into a gybe, so to speak! :)

No of course you can do it on big sails also. You just have to be careful the sail doesnt get low enough to catch the water.
