I remember the early internet times when I was able to contact Gene Colan personally through his email and he answered so kindly! He told me that his eyes were not as good anymore but he was keeping drawing commissions for the love of doing it. As an artist myself I can only hope to have that kind of love for what I do until the end! Thanks Gene, never forgotten!!!
If you look closely to some of his characters faces their good enough to use for painting portraits because of the positioning and authentic lighting and expression.
Of all the Marvel artists over the years Gene Colan is the one I liked the best and think of representing the 'typical' Marvel comics -very aware of Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko who paved the way and but for me there when I think of Daredevil, Dr. Strange, Submariner and Iron Man let alone the wonderful Tomb of Dracula and Colan will never be forgotten.
WOW - A man who devoted himself to his work & did it with emotional heart & soul - Many already knew by just looking at his work. A beautiful & pure artist to be treasured & dicovered for the ages. Thank you & RIP sweet Gene Colan.
I wasn't a big fan of Gene Colan's artwork, but over the years it has really grown on me. I guess as a kid you just look past the panels, but as I grew older I really grown to appreciate Gene's artwork and the character's fluid motion that he excelled at. Now I find myself going back and admiring and appreciating the detail Gene put in his artwork. I'm now going back and trying to collect the compete run of The Tomb of Dracula books that Gene did. So amazing one artist started and ended the book in it's entirety. These are my favorite books that Gene did, and that's saying a lot compared to the other work he has done. Thank you Mr. Colan for everything that you did and still do.
Gene Colan is one of my favorite artists and my all-time favorite Daredevil and Iron Man artist (David Mazzucchelli is maybe a close second on Daredevil). His work was always so dynamic and flowing, you felt as if you were looking at a movie screen, not comic book panels. Definitely one of a kind.
Nothing can replace the 'old guard' of comic book illustrators! (NOT saying new artists aren't good....) Literally living a life like Gene and others being an artist...
I used to read all the Marvel comics and some DC. When he stopped doing Daredevil I stopped buying a comic book. They lost my business permanently. I never went back .I would accept it.
Gene Colan never got the acclaim he deserved! I wrote an appreciation of his work shortly after he died. To read it do a Google search for ''squidoo gene colan''

Either be Daredevil or Captain America , The Mighty Avengers or Captain Marvel ., his art is awesome .
Thanks for everything, Gene. Your work was and remains brilliant. Rest in peace.
Gene was truly one of the greats. Loved his work on Daredevil. I became an artist myself inspired by Colan, Buscema, Romita and Kirby.
