Why the R32 is BETTER than the Golf R (Mk4 R32 vs Mk7.5 R)

  • On paper the 2019 Golf R is better in every way than the R32. More power, better tech, more room, advanced 4motion and so on. However, that doesn't tell the whole story. The R32 actually wins out in many ways that are hard to put on paper. The biggest one being those sweet R32 exhaust nosies from the VR6 engine! The R32 may not be fast, it also has all the mk4 VW issues, but it may be one of the most fun cars to drive. #r32 #humblemechanic #golfR

      You could've bought the sleeper r32 as I call it. They made an audi a3 4 door with the vr6 in it. I've been kinda secretly been advocating A3's to people
      looking for used GTI'S add A3's into there search since they are basically the same. Also since the Audi's cost a little more upfront they tend to be owned more by older "more responsible" people. I was looking for a Mk5 GTI in 6 speed. I found an A3 6 speed that was one owner, and had a little under 40k less miles on the odometer than all the other GTIs in my price range for around the same price.

    Charles, this series particularly interests me because I too have a ‘19 Spektrum R DSG (as my weekend car) and commute in my ‘03 GTI VR6 (original owner).
    I agree on the exhaust sound 100%.
    But actually my biggest let down is the difference in driving dynamics. Let me see if I can put it into words. In the GTI, I focus on driving”one-pedal-style”- the way that I balance the car in turns is by using minute adjustments in throttle to either induce lift-off oversteer or just manage a turn to feel just right through seat of the pants. Also, keeping my distance to the car in front of me is a very satisfying matter of also minute throttle adjustments. In the R, I expected to be able to drive similarly-as the DSG is essentially an automated manual trans. But I find myself unable to reach the same level of throttle adjustability with the chassis. The car just can’t hold its momentum with throttle at the same level as the mk4 can. I wind up having to use much more brake as if it had a torque converter constantly uncoupling off throttle. Or is it simply the increased back-pressure that the VR6 NA engine provides over the E888 turbo? What are your thoughts?

I could NEVER get comfortable. Any drive over about 45 minutes and I was ready for a chiropractor. No such complaints about the current seats, especially the perforated ones in the 7.5, which hold like cloth but also breathe. Totally agree about the VR6 engine note vs any 4-popper on the planet - no contest there.

      @oscardelbo8077 Před 4 lety +1

      Yeah man, the R32 Dsg has nearly instant response at the lights, but the R needs to spool, so unless the R uses launch control its slower than some granny cars right at the start, but it catches up of course. If you both use launch control, it is neck and neck for a few meters, then the R kills the 32

    I keep my 2004 r32 with tectonics cams shaft, giac software, bilstein sport, sport h&r springs,and front h&r sway bar ,and rear adjustable h&r sway bar, with Oz super leggera rims with continental dwrs +6 tires, the car handle perfectly with this combination ,and with the tectonics camshaft and the giac camshaft file, the engine really came alive.

  • @skylinefever
    @skylinefever Před 4 lety +1

    Back in 2011, my coworkers encountered an MKIV R32, and asked what what the point was. I said "Imagine liking the Subaru WRX but wanting something less hardcore. Power delivery is easier to control since there is no turbo, the suspension is a little more cushioned, and the interior is much nicer." It made perfect sense to all the guys.
    It is my understanding that when VW used turbo engines in later Golf R models, they eliminated the all or nothing feel of turbo boost found in rally cars. That made using a 6 cylinder engine unnecessary.

      @@AudiophileTubes The cars those guys were into cars much different from the Golf R32. If they won the lottery, the first thing they would buy is probably a Chevy Duramax 4x4 or Ford Powerstroke 6.7 4x4. They would know very little about anything VW. These guys never even heard of a VW with all wheel drive.

You can see in his eyes how sad he was when the car was driven away from him to the back and how disappointed he was when he saw his new car. To add salt to his wounds, the guys in back not realizing the guys heartbreak started revving it because of how sick it sounded. The guy started crying 😢

    One factor I noticed, switching from a MK6 to a MK4, was the steering feel. The MK6 electronic steering has no driver feel, compared to the MK4 steering. Overall, the MK4 is a more visceral driving experience. Not that it's unstable, but you feel the speed more.

    • @skylinefever

I really dislike most vag models brought out in recent years, driver experience is being almost forcibly removed in exchange for unnecessary gadgets & gimmicks. Simple well made designs have given room to overly complex & largely unreliable tech providing an ever more sanitised driving experience (Certainly the case here in the UK)
    My daily driver is an 01 A3 1.8t which I still love & continues to be incredibly reliable. My other toy is an 08 R8 with manual shift which is a joy to drive.
