Why the R32 is BETTER than the Golf R (Mk4 R32 vs Mk7.5 R)
Vložit
- čas přidán 26. 07. 2024
- On paper the 2019 Golf R is better in every way than the R32. More power, better tech, more room, advanced 4motion and so on. However, that doesn't tell the whole story. The R32 actually wins out in many ways that are hard to put on paper. The biggest one being those sweet R32 exhaust nosies from the VR6 engine! The R32 may not be fast, it also has all the mk4 VW issues, but it may be one of the most fun cars to drive. #r32 #humblemechanic #golfR

3.6 VR6 in the MK7 sounds like a good idea to me.
Me too.
There is a guy who I think lives in Virginia or Maryland that did a 3.6 swap in his Corrado, I saw it at a Hot Wheels event... man that car is super clean it is the dream car I always wanted
@@Vexman2200 Silver? I have seen that car. it's FRESH!
J G yes sir I absolutely agree only been done in Germany, HGP Motorsports, there’s a video on here.
Absolutely. The 3.6 VR in an R would be amazing. And the efficiency isn't terrible. I took a 300 mile road trip in my Passat GT earlier this week and got a little over 30 mpg. And grinned all day ;)
If you don’t understand why he thinks the R32 is better you should go drive one. Absolutely amazing driving experience!
The sound is it for me, cant get over it!
yup, reason 1: vr6 exhaust note. no other reasons needed.
@@Kaiceratops27 It's over 60hp less... I am driving for speed and sound is secondary to me. That's just me though.

What makes the R32 better for Charles is he owns the R32 and is making payments on the R. Enough said. 😎
HAHAH There is truth to that. I freaking HATE car payments.
Buying a used R32 in good condition would require taking out finance now, at least in the UK minumum £10,000 for an R32 but usually at least £12000.
@@gravemind6536 maybe so but I'm sure Charles bought his outright.
Can get a pretty nice R32 in the UK for £7k
Hopefully the repairs aren't the equivalent of a monthly loan payment. I have heard that older VWs get very expensive to repair, especially the rare ones.

Just this week I totaled my mk4 24v vr6 GTI, man I’m sure gonna miss that thing. I appreciate all the advice you’ve given me throughout the past couple years and for always replying to my comments you’ve been a lifesaver. This def won’t be the last VR I’ll own. Maybe I’ll save up for an r32 and make it a cool build as what you’re doing.
Angel Gomez damn that’s a bummer. Sorry to hear about your GTi.
My condolences mk4brotha
Sorry bro. The stuff we do for our cars. I’m on medical leave and have no income but had to spend $1000 to fix my 24v GLI. I can’t let it go
May the Volkswagen Gods give you peace and a new mrk4 R32. I just dumped about $2000 into my 01 vr6 2.8 GLX this summer.
I will keep your car in my heart. My commuter is the very same car.
I like driving my daughters 2016 GTI, it feels modern and looks awesome in black. Fast too. But there's something about the MK4 R32 that puts a smile on my face ALL the time
If the VR6 had been an option on my 2018 R I'd have checked that box with a quickness!! Totally agree on the seats as well. I'd seriously love to find a mk4 R32 to go with my mk 7.5R.
Lowered and with wheels, the mk4 looks way better IMO. I have a mk6 myself but there is something about the body shape of the mk4 that makes it look so good
He thicc
LOVE the Mk4 shape! Very German.
Glad to see others appreciate mk4s as much as I do mine.
Getting in my R32 and hearing it start puts a smile on my face everytime😆😆😆😆
Same!
Same here Oscar!👍

Same argument can be said about the M3. E92 M3 > F80 M3
I agree, E39 M5 > E92 M3.
I love the f90 m5 m
I know many people prefer the E30 M3.
Wrong video
This is something that has actually been on my mind recently. I also own a MK4 R32 and the new R line golf's don't seem to have the driver feel or that glorious unmistakable exhaust sound. I hope I never have to replace my R32 but a VR6 option for the new Golf R might just win me over. Great video as always!
only the sound. for everything else I'd choose R. Except that sound...ahhh....
Consolation Prize! :
your neighbors love it that you don't have that noisy R32.
as a child one of my all time favourite films was cannon ball run. the opening with the black Lamborghini, noise of the v12 screaming. I would rewind the vhs and play it over and over. this is close enough to living that moment for real. twisty mountain road , windows down nailing the loud pedal. decat for extra volume! have always been a VW golf nut from the first time I drove a mk2 GTI 16v, then mk1 GTI, mk3 GTI, mk3 vr6, mk4 tdi 150 and now I have a mk4 130 tdi colour concept in jazz blue and one of 20 odd red uk 2 door mk4 r32. I will never sell both. my daily 50mpg , and my beast. every time I turn the key I smile like the little boy who watch cannon ball all those year ago
Agree about driving feel and sound with the Mk4. Driver's Choice.
4 years plus since I sold my .:R32 and I dream about the day my kids grow up and I can have one again!!!
I sold my MK5 R32 2014 and buyed a MK7 Rline and a Year later i saw a MK4 R32 and i was flashed and my wife said no, and the MK4 R32 are still in my Garage^^. Dont worry our Child is 23 and graduadet. For sure i never sell a R32 in my whole Life^^
I said that when I sold my escort cosworth. Now 50k can't see that ever happening.
Never had and never will do that... Sorry for your lost...
Don't even hypothesize a new model Golf VR6, for the longing and pity it conjures up in the deepest fractures of a dubber's heart, knowing that such an essential craving shall never be satisfied.
Truth!
The R400 ? G-loder and a Vr6?
Speak for yourself 😂
The vr6 does sound great. Another great sounding v6 if anyone's heard one is a Mazda KL series 2.5L from the Mx6, Probe GT, Millennia & 626. With a good exhaust or even straight piped with resonator... 😌
The Mk4 R32 is a future classic. You should already see that in the prices. I can hardly imagine the following generations become classics in the same way the Mk4 did because there are too many of them.
I follow them it’s nuts! I’d like to add another to the fleet
It is already a classic.
Thanks for reposting this. I was getting crazy rechecking.
Yeah it was wonky as crap. Not sure what happened. LOL
The sound and response you get from a naturally aspirated engine is great for performance driving. Love the VR6.
Great Video👍🏼
Not many people know this, but the golf 4 R32 was also built with 4 doors. But only 500 times.
The 4 door Golf R32 was only available in Europe (optional)
You could've bought the sleeper r32 as I call it. They made an audi a3 4 door with the vr6 in it. I've been kinda secretly been advocating A3's to people
looking for used GTI'S add A3's into there search since they are basically the same. Also since the Audi's cost a little more upfront they tend to be owned more by older "more responsible" people. I was looking for a Mk5 GTI in 6 speed. I found an A3 6 speed that was one owner, and had a little under 40k less miles on the odometer than all the other GTIs in my price range for around the same price.
Yes. I recently purchased a 4 door mk4 r32 as a project car
Nope. They are here in Australia.
The vr6 sounds amazing. The older cars you feel less buffered from the driving experience making it more engaging and exciting.
Charles, this series particularly interests me because I too have a ‘19 Spektrum R DSG (as my weekend car) and commute in my ‘03 GTI VR6 (original owner).
I agree on the exhaust sound 100%.
But actually my biggest let down is the difference in driving dynamics. Let me see if I can put it into words. In the GTI, I focus on driving”one-pedal-style”- the way that I balance the car in turns is by using minute adjustments in throttle to either induce lift-off oversteer or just manage a turn to feel just right through seat of the pants. Also, keeping my distance to the car in front of me is a very satisfying matter of also minute throttle adjustments. In the R, I expected to be able to drive similarly-as the DSG is essentially an automated manual trans. But I find myself unable to reach the same level of throttle adjustability with the chassis. The car just can’t hold its momentum with throttle at the same level as the mk4 can. I wind up having to use much more brake as if it had a torque converter constantly uncoupling off throttle. Or is it simply the increased back-pressure that the VR6 NA engine provides over the E888 turbo? What are your thoughts?
Will never top the R32 sound and styling. It’s the last old skoll shape before the new sharp lines that’s been added to later models.
I like the R just different thing nowadays.
lol... I caught that earlier. Great work ! thnx
Charles today I needed to work hard, so I’m watching till now, on the subject, I’m on board with the R32, love the angry hippos sound it has, no 4 banger will get that iconic VR6 sound
Yassir! I'm glad you mentioned the seats first, not gonna lie probably the #1 thing I love about this car.
I came here from Jason's channel. Love your collabs and both of your works
Awesome. Thank you. 💛 my dude EE
Great video as usual Charles! Love the VR noises for sure. Look into adding a Sony touchscreen HU into the mk4, easy way to add CarPlay to the older cars. Put one in my B6 passat and it was an easy install, looks fairly stock and works great.
Old school cool same why I feel about my 1.9 TDi the Mk4 so easy to fix
I have the rare mk4 r32 from the factory with DSG. To me it was the perfect combination when I searched for one 10 years ago. It’s still raw and visceral, but a breeze to push to the limit and driveable everyday in all weather. And the big Alu paddles are lovely
Awesome.
I love the VR6 engine noise so much I swapped my 1.8t engine in my Audi S3 8L for the 3.2ltr VR engine... it will be turbo charged too very soon...
NICE!

The R line cars are popping up like flies around my area.
I would recommend training yourself to keep your thumbs out of the spokes.. This was drilled into my head in my racing days..
Humble mechanic,
Love your videos. Very informative. I wanted to ask what's your thoughts on some good quality tire brands that last a long time? Thanks again for your videos
It totally depends on tire needs and budget.
You are so right about the sound. I still remember it 17 years later. I test drove this car when new and still think of it as one that got away.
You didn't address weight, but thinking the R32 has to be lighter than the Golf R's that followed it. Less weight is always a good thing. I have seen good examples of '04 R32s for as much as $20K or even one at $32,000!...which is about what it sold for new.
Just by looking at your videos, I’ve bought a MK4 for myself, but a 1,9tdi 4motion. Completly inlove with these cars.
MMM TDI 4mo.. I am jealous
Couldn't agree with you more. Everything you've said is spot on. I miss a raw car that just gives you the driver experience. All the driving aids kill experience
I just stumbled across your channel recently while watching someone's video on Direct Injection engines, because I recently bought a Mazdaspeed6, and was wondering about oil catch cans. Anyways, the little segment you had in that vid was a great quick explanation on the issue, and I am glad I subscribed. You have a "real guy" sort of way of describing and explaining, and I dig it. Keep up the good work. Also, I'm really more of an air-cooled VDub guy, but I dated this girl back in the day who drove a red Corrado Vr6 with a stick, and I agree, that is easily one of my favorite sounding engines. Def best V6 I've ever drove
Thanks for the kind words. I have tired to buy so many corrados and the ALL fall through . HA
@@HumbleMechanic yeah, they are sweet little cars. It was nice too. Red paint with tan leather interior and bbs wheels. Man I wish I woulda kept her around, the car, not the girl... She was crazy... heh...
You are perfectly right!
The general feeling of these iconic R32 cannot ne explained, just experimented!
For info, in Europe a 5 doors version of the mk4 R32 was available.
I’ve owned a red mk4 R32/ mk5 R32/ mk6 R and while the R was the quickest and easiest to tune, it being turbo, nothing is like the original R32, it felt like a tank and sounded like heaven... and therefore I now have a 2018 Passat Gt to once again have that lovely vr6 music, great videos Charles keep it up !
As soon as Charles mentions the R32’s exhaust note at 3:10, did anyone else pick up on his quick, involuntary, ear-to-ear grin that immediately followed??? I don’t own a Mk4 R32 (yet), but I do own a Mk4 GTI w/ the 2.8L VR6 mated to the same 6-speed manual O2M gearbox in the R32, and I definitely know what Charles was feeling in that very moment.. In fact, I would argue that every VR6 owner who fancies his/her self a car enthusiast probably knows that feeling.. Pure joy and exhilaration!!
It’s true. So so true. 😎😎😎
You had me at Wookiee noises. In fact, that’s all you need to mention.
Hey dear, Can I ask you. If can be programs the abs for Audi A4 if I fix a used parts. Thanks.
Got a mk4 r32 bdb engine in my mk2 golf 🤙🏼
Sounds immense and is more fun to drive than more modern cars
I love the sound of the vr6 but to say it's the best sounding engine ever made by VW Audi I cant stand behind. That would be if you forget about the 8k redline 4.2 in the b7 RS4 and who can forget the original Audi Quattro with that amazing in line five turbo. The vr6 is definitely one of the grates though 👍
I believe HumbleMechanic said the best sounding VW Audi made. The R32 was built at the same plant as the TT and A3 were, it is basically an Audi TT 3.2 under the skin.
Best sounding Audi opens the door to many others, the RS4, RS2, Quattro, RS3/TTRS, R8, RS6, S8, RS7...
Lazarus Hernandez it’s not an txt under the skin at all.

Best sounding vw... a Lamborghini
You're a living legend Chazza. While I don't like the VW brand, I do however appreciate your videos, your skill, your persona. Please keep up the good work young man, you not only entertain, but bring joy into peoples lives. Always a thumbs up for Charles.
I'm on my 2nd R (a 7 and now a 7.5) and also bought a new R32 in 2004 when they came out. Regarding the seats - for my anatomy, those Konig seats were absolutely brutal. I could NEVER get comfortable. Any drive over about 45 minutes and I was ready for a chiropractor. No such complaints about the current seats, especially the perforated ones in the 7.5, which hold like cloth but also breathe. Totally agree about the VR6 engine note vs any 4-popper on the planet - no contest there.
I love the video, but also wanted to know which road that was in the mountains. I'm in Hickory NC and it looks familiar and I've been wanting to take my A5 up some good roads and just haven't gotten around to it. Thanks for the content :)

You can still get a 3 door golf r here in Ireland.
I noticed from a few videos back, why has your golf r got a steel front subframe?
Great video. it's true that the VR6 engine sounds awesome
One just passed me today that R32 sound is awesome.
It really does!!! How you doin man
Thanks for your great vids Charles! You are very talented. Just a quick question, how is the lag in the R compared to the r32 when accelerators are floored at low speed? If you drag race without launching does the r32 have advantage for a few seconds?
Yeah man, the R32 Dsg has nearly instant response at the lights, but the R needs to spool, so unless the R uses launch control its slower than some granny cars right at the start, but it catches up of course. If you both use launch control, it is neck and neck for a few meters, then the R kills the 32
I would love to see this comparison from the maintenance / technical point of view, to see how much the production cost cuts have affected the latest R
I keep my 2004 r32 with tectonics cams shaft, giac software, bilstein sport, sport h&r springs, and front h&r sway bar ,and rear adjustable h&r sway bar, with Oz super leggera rims with continental dwrs +6 tires, the car handle perfectly with this combination ,and with the tectonics camshaft and the giac camshaft file, the engine really came alive.

Sorry about the weird upload before... Thanks CZcams! HAHHAHAHA
HumbleMechanic I figured out what was going on in the raw video. But when you look at the raw video vs the finish you get an idea of the amount of work that goes into these videos
I think this video pretty much confirms to ALWAYS have a VR6 in my fleet.
You just cant beat the sound of a bigger engine no matter how much power your smaller engine is making
All great points! The MK4 is totally a better car in many ways. If the 7.5 came with a VR6 manual it'd be hard to choose. I've heard of VR6 swaps across the pond in the newer MK7+ platform, but have never seen.
Back in 2011, my coworkers encountered an MKIV R32, and asked what what the point was. I said "Imagine liking the Subaru WRX but wanting something less hardcore. Power delivery is easier to control since there is no turbo, the suspension is a little more cushioned, and the interior is much nicer." It made perfect sense to all the guys.
It is my understanding that when VW used turbo engines in later Golf R models, they eliminated the all or nothing feel of turbo boost found in rally cars. That made using a 6 cylinder engine unnecessary.
Are you kidding?! One look and drive of the R32, and one knows exactly what the point is!
@@AudiophileTubes The cars those guys were into cars much different from the Golf R32. If they won the lottery, the first thing they would buy is probably a Chevy Duramax 4x4 or Ford Powerstroke 6.7 4x4. They would know very little about anything VW. These guys never even heard of a VW with all wheel drive.
I knew what the R32 was because VW was my passion. VW was my passion because it was the only German car I could afford, and I like they way German cars feel.
I like the Mk 5 R32 the most personally. Just near impossible to find in Canada.
FukU2222 I remember when I worked at a VW dealership, some guys wife made him trade in his mk5 R32 for a wagon because he just had a second kid and needed more space but couldn’t afford a second parking spot at their condo. He only got $8k trade in value for it and had only 56miles on it. You can see in his eyes how sad he was when the car was driven away from him to the back and how disappointed he was when he saw his new car. To add salt to his wounds, the guys in back not realizing the guys heartbreak started revving it because of how sick it sounded. The guy started crying 😢
They are rare in Canada because we get the imports from the US but trust me you can find them just need a quick trigger finger because they won't stay on the market longer than a couple of weeks.
@@PLr1c3r couple of weeks?? more like a couple of days!
@@InitialXG $8K? There has to be more to this story; how much did he owe on the R32? How much did the new car cost? There had to be some financing finagling going on.
I own a 3.2L 24v 4M Passat. Love it.
What VR6 NA does everyone think makes the best sound? I'm from Australia so mufflers and cats are mandatory.
Question what is the best exhaust system for 2019 golf R and why Charles haven’t installed one on his?
I also don’t love the way this car sounds with exhaust. I’m going to do a downpipe first and see what I get
One factor I noticed, switching from a MK6 to a MK4, was the steering feel. The MK6 electronic steering has no driver feel, compared to the MK4 steering. Overall, the MK4 is a more visceral driving experience. Not that it's unstable, but you feel the speed more.
I never drove both cars, so I wouldn't have known. The #1 reason I preferred German cars over others is the heavier steering feel when compared to American or Japanese cars.
The R32 sounds fantastic, but I'm partial to the MK7 R. I was surprised that you didn't say that the R32 steering feel was better than the MK7. At least in the GTI, it's good but could be better. Love your Spektrum color, by the way. Nice video.
I have a mk3 jetta 2.0 5 speed and a mk5 2.5l. Tiptronic 2 door rabbit so I feel the same way. They each have their gifts.
I'll take my 85 Scirocco 8V over an R32. That was THE BEST balance of handling and ride. I miss that thing SO much even though I drive a new Golf every 6 months/1 Year.
Thanks for a great video as usual. Even if I disagreed with everything you said (which I don’t), everything you said hit the nail on the head. Volkswagen gave The R32 something that Volkswagen themselves and a lot of car companies today still struggle to give most of their products- CHARACTER!!!
As an old owner of mkV r32 2016 5 door , I still miss that car too much. I recommend any petrolheads to have one or drive. I had a special custom made exhaust on it and sound was amazing. Thanks for the video too.
2 dr MK6 R here. My kid’s driving my old MK4 VR6 Jetta @ 300K. That’s the car that made me a “dubber.” But I had to have more leg room at 6’5” and made the switch to the MK6. Would love a Wookie in this car, if it didn’t trash the handling. Is the VR really much heavier than the 2.0T?
Everyone seems to remeber the R32 but who remembers the Seat Leon Cupra v6? Both the R32 and the Cupra v6 are a timeless design.
I love those cars the sound is just amazing, whenever I see or hear a vr6 i get a smile on my face
What about comparing the limited number 2008 MK5 R32 to the MK4 R32? That I would like to see.
As an 08 R32 owner, I too would love to that!
I went from an 00’ VR6 to an 04’ R32 and it’s just been amazing and I don’t think I’ll ever not want a VR6 in my life💙
I totally understand I have a 03 gti 24v vr6 for sale, and a mk4 r32 I drive. Next I would like to build a mk2 golf with r32 engine, haldex and boost it for a sleeper street car.
We got the 5 door here in the uk, but actually for some reason in the Mk4 the 3-door looks way better, but on newer golfs, Mk5 onwards i prefer the 5-door. Another cool vid, cheers
What's the cats name hanging on your face.. an introduction would be nice.. its stealing the show🤩
The two door option of every Golf model made is better looking that the 4 door version . End of discussion LOL
I have a 04 r32 and last year I blew the clutch. I replaced it and now I'm having issues with my 1st gear, plus having issues with "slipping " if I hit the gas hard. Any suggestions? Everyone that I've taken the car (except the dealer) has no idea what's the cause. They bleed and replace the brake fluid and tell me try that and see how it goes.
The next video will be why the Golf R is better than the R32.
I never liked the flat bottom wheel.
R TSI crap engine R32 its old engine
Great video mate. Totally agree with you. I really dislike most vag models brought out in recent years, driver experience is being almost forcibly removed in exchange for unnecessary gadgets & gimmicks. Simple well made designs have given room to overly complex & largely unreliable tech providing an ever more sanitised driving experience (Certainly the case here in the UK)
My daily driver is an 01 A3 1.8t which I still love & continues to be incredibly reliable. My other toy is an 08 R8 with manual shift which is a joy to drive.
Keep up the good work my friend.
Nicely put. Agreed. Overload of Technology, even in today's "basic" transportation vehicles.
"I really dislike most vag models brought out in recent years, driver experience is being almost forcibly removed in exchange for unnecessary gadgets & gimmicks. " That's why Honda + Alfa Romeo > Volkswagen? 🤔 The Civic Type R has tech but it's relatively minimal, while the Giulietta Veloce is considered more "raw" and exciting than the Mk7 GTI (see the Harry's Garage review of Giulietta vs GTI)? (Also the Harry's Garages review of the CTRs, both FK8 & FL5 for that matter. Harry Metcalfe found the Mk7 Golf R to feel dull -- "you may as well be driving an ordinary Golf" -- compared to his own GR Yaris by comparison...)
@@TassieLorenzo Harry's Garage is a great channel. He's a wonderful commentator.
REMAKE THE VIDEO CHARLES! :') Now you have a 2.5 DAZA in the R I think we need a revisit!
I used to keep a big paper clip on my mk4 r32 flapper valve so I could here that glorious sound at any rpm. I haven’t bought another R line golf since they went to auto only for the mk5, then 4 cylinder there after.
Great vid Charles. As you know I also have the MK4 R32 and I’m the original owner of mine. I have a MK7 GTI DSG. I couldn’t agree with you more. I feel more connected to the road with the R32. The R32 is such a RAW Car.
'Contraction control' lol well done
I think the better question is what is going to be the true top end replacement engine for fans of the VR6? I have had the NA 2.0 in my 97 Jetta, 1.8t in my 02 Golf, VR6 in my 02 Jetta and the 2.5 in my 13 Passat. I still love the VR6 and wish it was still an option.
I like my MKIV GTI 20th Anniversary a lot more than ANY another GTI.
Such a gorgeous GTI, in every respect! Yours yellow?
Great video! I wonder if vw will revive the Vr6, since there is an Vr6 turbo variant available in China. If vw development is following Charles. Please chime in! Vw golf RH(R heritage, 4motion, manual. Vr6 turbo) sounds like a winner
You're so right!
Just a couple of changes on the suspension and we have a car who stick on the road (According to your driving skill... ) like I stick inside my seat and with the sound, I do not want a Golf R, at least never exchange mine for any one...
Plus those Mk IV Bauhaus looks! ❤️
