- This show (YAWARA!) shot to the top of my favourite shows list this year out of nowhere when I stumbled across it while looking for judo stuff. The detail and love for judo is apparent in the animation and although the story has it's hang-ups, the sport action is riveting from start to finish. (Apologies for the low quality and lack of subtitles, I did my best with the video files I had.) The show is based on Naoki Urasawa's manga that ran from the late 80s to the early 90s.

高校から短大、実業団と戦い2度のオリンピック。ソ連邦が無くなるなど、時勢のネタも入れながら最後には松田記者とのハッピーエンド。柔道界では不朽の名作ですね。
YAWARA、めっちゃ好きでした。ジョディとの一戦、最高でした。そして最終話は今でも忘れません。ためてためてためてためて、最後の最後の告白。あの瞬間、松田さんの表情、柔ちゃんの表情。。中学生の私には、たまらんかったです。
自分は何かの大会でいつもいるはずの松田さんがいなくて、いまいち調子が悪かった柔ちゃん。そこに何とか柔ちゃんの試合中に松田さんが間に合って到着して腕を振って応援している姿を一瞬目にしてからの一本背負い これにときめきました 最初は柔ちゃん松田さんのこと何とも思っていなかったんだろうけど短大受験くらいからかな？気になりはじめたの？
内容も去ることながら、YAWARAはedも全て素晴らしかった。最後までしっかり魅せる珠玉の逸品。
何かの大会で柔と富士子が決勝で勝負する回が個人的には神回でした。タイトルが夢の親友対決！やったかな。柔の圧勝なんやけど富士子が柔の強さに感動する回。シナリオも素晴らしい。

すごく臨場感や迫力があるからアニメ見てて毎回試合になると手に汗握る位興奮して見てたよ
33年前、6歳の頃見てました。
どんなに身体の大きい相手でも怯むことなく、ポイポイ投げる柔が見ていて気持ちよかった。
投げている時の音や巻き起こる風の躍動感、相手が床に打ちつけられた音も懐かしくて心地好い。
スピードとタイミングが重要であることは、YAWARAとるろ剣に教わった少女時代でした。
柔さんに一本背負いされたい。と思うぐらい気持ちいい背負いっぷり！
さやかさんの差し歯が飛んでいくのが毎度好き！
今のアニメキャラみたいに赤やらピンクやらわけのわからない髪の色したアニメよりよっぽど魅力ある作品だった
迫力のある芸術的な一本背負も感動モノだけど個人的には小技を絡めてポイントを取るシーンもけっこう感動する
こうしてみると作画が安定してるのもYAWARAの素晴らしいところですね。
皆口さんをキャスティングした人は凄いけど、永井一郎さんをキャスティングした人も同じくらい凄い。
皆口さんをキャスティングしたのは浦沢さんですよ。「ねるとんのこみたいな素朴な声がいいなと言ったら、ほんとにそうなった」とどこかで仰っておりました。

I'm aware of is popularity in Japan, I meant outside of Japan.
The whole Yawara Anime is fantastic, and her last match with Jody Rockwell in the Atlanta special is epic. Its great! 124 Episodes of the TV and 1 movie. Funny note -- There was a Japanese Judoka who is nicknamed "Yawara" for her exploits as she was also an Gold Medal Olympian her name is Ryoko Tamura. Funny thing is like Fujiko in the Anime, she became a mom, and then still won a world championship. changing the perception of women for alot of Japanese.

@@Idkk_448 you are gonna have to set sail on the high seas - if you know what I mean..But the 124 episodes are subtitled I've seen it as the last episodes were done by fansubbers back in the early 2000s. I don't have links unfortunately but they are out there. If you ever get a chance to watch this is 100% one of the best sports anime out there!

Yoooo i dont practice judo and I don't kno the movement or techniques but these transitions are sick. The way the animations show her flowing into each technique is awesome

密かに育てられ鮮烈デビューの天才なんだけど、自分が「仕込まれた特技」に疑問を持つ主人公に負けたライバル迄夢中に・・・って、後の「頭文字D」のプロットそのもの。
描かれていた時期も違うし、ジャンルも別だけど、両方とも大ヒットした辺り、盛り上がるハナシのセオリーに忠実に乗れた感じ。

no wonder some of the viewers would be reminded of ippo, yawara was also from madhouse, same excellent animation studio used in hajime no ippo and even one punch man season 1

Monster, Redline, Wicked City, Ninja Scroll, Summer Wars etc. Madhouse has made so many well known movies/series

What I found interesting in this manga is how the talent and knowledge of judo is passed down over three generations, and how they live their lives.
This might be one of good reference examples to me of how to make use of talents thought to be better suited to men when they are inherited by women, and how to balance their lifestyles.
But I am afraid that in the real world, the image was completely destroyed.

現在とはルールも技術体系も全然違う時代だからなあ。投げ技を得意とする日本人選手相手に、まともに組もうとする外国人選手は現在ならいない(と思う)。
でも、そんなYAWARAが好きです。

He also drew Master Keaton, Happy, Pineapple War etc. these and along with Yawara, are his early works. it was later in his career when he wrote Monster and got an reputation for psychological mystery manga writer. and so he started following in that direction

I've always pondered if "bad judo" is actually more dangerous and street effective. Your thoughts on intentionally botched judo techniques like dropping guys on their head and fucking up their arms and legs upon landing?

Whatever gets the job done, really. Judo is a "safe" version of many old jujutsu techniques that were designed to kill or cripple. For example kata guruma used to be done from behind and you slam the guy on his head. Osoto gari used to be done by driving the other guy's head into the ground instead of his back, or you stab him in the neck with a knife first and use that to drive him down.
Here's a dissection of Masahiko Kimura's Osoto Gari, he loved to spike the head, must have been a great psychological edge on his opponents (if a little dirty in a sports context)
