40K definitely benefits from being The First major sci-fi/sci-fantasy TTWG. It meant they could beg steal and borrow from other settings, from movies to books to comics and different genres from the get go, being a glorious hodgepodge of influences and interpretations where pretty much any fan of sci-fi and/or fantasy will find something to grab their attention. It’s got super soldiers, it’s got tech bro aliens, it’s got Kaiju, it’s got mechs. It’s a proper “and the kitchen sink” setting which still has room for personal flair and preference to be expressed.
40k is a sandbox for us. It's a setting where we can make it our own, doodle or graffiti in the margins, and tell the stories of your characters through battles, painting, drawing and fanfic.
This sometimes gets lost on the fandom, especially when the Horus Heresy enters the picture, but that's 40k and Warhammer generally at its best. Not just the stories told to us, but the stories we make from it.

This is exactly why 40K appeals to so many people! You can have find damn near anything imaginable within the 40K universe. From super serious to lsd fuelled fever dream it’s all there, sometime you just have to look a bit harder to find it, but you probably will find it.

I’ve always said it’s just fantasy in space. There are super soldiers shooting xenomorph monster while essentially a wizard casts fireball at some mad max Orks. It’s just fun.
Why, when listing to this, do I see Kirioth sitting on an armchair, in a dress robe, and with a monocle on. Yet he is still using his usual mannerisms. I like the concept.

Jokes aside, I do agree, it's insane how big and complicated the setting is, necromunda alone could be an entire franchise on it's own and it's just a fraction of the universe it's in.
And yes, 40k is very much fantasy. Sword wielding knights in clad armour fighting monsters and demons. The spaceships tend to be cathedrals that travel with magic through hell. The SciFy part is more like the frosting on a cake. I'd gather that SCIENCE fiction requires at least a little bit of focus on the SCIENCE part to fit the description.

That "Works because they think it works" isn't actually the case with Orks, that's just memelore based on not bothering to read the lore. Their tech is functional.
Yes and no, Ork WAAAGH energy does "grease" reality and allow things to work better than they should, or allow things that shouldn't really work to work. The more Orks, the greater the gestalt WAAAGH field, which can lead to some things like: Guns firing but jamming when anyone else uses them; vehicles running well but breaking apart when anyone else tries to use them, etc.

Rating War hammer 40k: on 10 (going over 10 is alowed, for 40k is designed to go overboard on stuff)
1. the universe: 13/10 (perfect, just perfect)
2. lore pre 2010: 9/10 (most of them are fictional love letters to planet wide genocide by all parties present, in fiction, what's not to love?)
3. recon lore/new stuffier: between 3/10 (retcon, woke-i-fication) and 7/10 for new stuff (GW stop this, get back on track)
4. Models of old (before 2010): 8/10 back then, now 4/10 (playable, but should come at serious discount)
5. Models AoS, primaries (post 2010): 11/10 (just drop dead gorgeous)
6. gameplay up to 7th edition: 9.5/10 (the to beat big boy system out there, the juggernaut of the industry, with clear easy to use stat chards)
7. gameplay 8th and past: 6/10 for small battles/introduction. Beyond 1k points 3/10, overly bloated even when simplified (almost to idiocracy levels. (Needlessly complex due to ever changing point costs, stat chards and faction rules and indexes being dropped at random, rarely addressing actual issues and more likely to create more problems. One almost needs 2 or 3 PhDs to just get going, let alone be tournament ready)
Versus the woke-craze: Overall, fantastic universe that needs to be gatekept from folk that hate on the universe/fans and have no place there. If you do not like football, either playing or watching, then go do something else, not come in and ruin it for all of us. We were doing fine....
I am since 1990 as both a player and reader of the books/magazines a huge fan. I think beside sport and pc games like Cod and World of warcraft, this is my favorite past time. The main reason it will never be number one is ... the price, at current, unpainted model not in discoutboxes are the price gram by gram of pure silver... I'm not too shy to spend on my hobies, but man, at current prices, it affects my opinion.
