Learn Liberty Online - Nellie

Nellie is one of the horses that we will be following in the online course and I cannot wait to share her journey with you!!
This beautiful little mare started off very internalised. She has learned throughout her life that she has no control over what happens to her and that she just needs to “deal with it”. It was clear that she had spent many years in a state of learned helplessness and dissociating from what her nervous system was telling her to do.
As a result she was very internalised and hesitant to connect and engage with me. Just picking up a whip resulted in her immediately disconnecting. Similarly, as soon as any unfamiliar guidance was offered she would disconnect in fear of what would happen if she got something “wrong”.
Her body was stiff and her movement was very restricted due to the tension that she was holding on to.
Over the sessions, she began to realise that SHE was in control over what happens to her and that she has a choice. Whenever she became at all overwhelmed, she would walk away, take a breath, and then re-connect when she was ready.
Giving her an escape route allowed her to be able to process the emotion and release the tension instead of suppressing it and allowing it to build up internally like she was so used to.
When she realised that she could engage on her own accord and that she could protect herself by leaving at any time - her playful and expressive side finally started to show!!
For Nellie, the use of very gentle, slow and non-escalating guidance was super important. She needed to feel that she had all the time in the world to think about what I was inviting her to do and that I would not pressure her or rush her.
Gradually, she became more confident and brave enough to remain connected despite new and unfamiliar guidance!!While this was something that Billie and Levi could do almost immediately because they were already confident in themselves, this change was a really big deal for Nellie as an individual. Seeing the transformation in this gorgeous girl was certainly the most rewarding part of creating this course!
