    Before lifting/modding my Lexus GX460, I decided to take my vehicle to Duggy's Garage for a more in-depth mechanical inspection. This video details my experience and what we found out about my GX. Huge thanks to the entire Duggy's Garage team, and looking forward to getting her lifted soon. Also huge thanks to the GX community for being so welcoming and friendly to someone exploring the platform and capabilities more every day.
    Thanks for watching!

    This is one of the best 460 inspections I’ve seen. Sadly, my GX 460’s transmission failed at 186k. I’m getting a Lexus reman transmission installed next week. I’m also getting the valley plate coolant leak fixed.
    I debated selling my GX but couldn’t since replacing it would cost me $15k-$20k and I’d figure I can get at least another 100k+ miles out of it.

    Another reason why KDSS “delete” is not a popular mod is safety. When GX460s first came out, they had an issue with leaning almost to the point of rolling over when taking high speed corners or a moose test. That’s was corrected in 2010-2011. I would imagine if you delete KDSS, your chance of rolling the truck is higher, or, if you do roll it, your insurance may not cover the damage if their inspection shows you’ve “deleted” the system. That is my guess.

    The presenter seems like a nice guy. He clearly has very limited experience, if any, working on vehicles and wants to learn. GREAT! For those who do not know, the GX 460 and the 4 Runner are virtually identical, aside from the engine and transmission. We have ordered a new 2022 GX 460 for my wife to replace her aged 2001 4Runner that we bought new and I have maintained. The 4 Runner has 245,000 miles and neither of the front axles have been touched. I am shocked but, it is true and how in the world the boots held up and still are fine is beyond me. This is why 4Runners and the GX 460/470 are so loved for unbelievable reliability and quality. To go into boulder / rock gardens, you will have replaced the front bumper of the GX as it kills the approach angle as well as raised it and put on bigger tires, regeared it, and such. Anyways.... Enjoy and I am excited to get the GX to enjoy on the road and in bad weather here in Colorado and while driving home to Southern California. It will probably never see more than a washboard dirt road as is true for 99% of GXs. Best to all!

      Hello Habeeb! Thank you for watching the video. I have several videos I am putting together now on that subject, but will touch on my thoughts here.
      First, I LOVE my GX so far. Has been great and reliable. I was a little hesitant at first with higher miles (mine has about 77k miles), but there are many many high mileage examples that will probably be driving for many more miles with normal maintenance.
      Do I recommend the GX? I do! Really, in its category, the GX 460 is priced excellently! I did consider a slightly older GX 470 instead, but have since driven one. I really enjoyed the GX 460 more. Both are excellent vehicles though.
      1 thing I am still working through is the KDSS leak mentioned in the video. I wish I would have caught that when I inspected the vehicle since working on the KDSS system is a little bit of a black hole with dealers (cheap'ish option new with not a lot of detail/people who know how to service it - can be very expensive to service). Just take a look like in the video for any leaks. Other than that, its built like a luxurious tank and drives fantastically.
      I hope you get a chance to like the video and subscribe. In future videos (once Houston, Texas unburies itself from snow), I will be cranking out a bunch of content around my GX INCLUDING how I will be addressing the KDSS system.
      Hope to see you stick around and commenting on future videos. Any question? Ask away. I try to respond to all comments promptly.
      Take care,
      Justin

    From researching these GX SUV a common trend is vibration in steering etc. This if from viewing the Lexus service site. Fix is to electronically balance tires or replace tires.
    This seems to show up from service to service within 10K miles.
    Anyone chime in on this? Obviously this is a heavy vehicle and can go out of alignment etc, if your rock climbing or driving on rutted roads etc.
    But the majority Id say are normal highway drivers. Any preference for brand of tires to alleviate this?

    • @NVSTRZ34
      @NVSTRZ34  Před rokem +2

      Hi Chris!
      A couple of responses here:
      1. Vibration in steering: Never had this issue before or after lift personally. Car was actually pretty smooth. I did a few several heavy accelerations before and lifting and it was incredibly smooth. The only thing stopping me from going even faster was brakes. They tend to be like light switches under heavier braking.
      One thing I did want to make sure I got was the road force balancing (spelling?). That's supposed to be a good idea for most balancing needs. There are plenty of comments online that repeat this sentiment.
      2. As far as brand of tires go, if you go with a high quality AT or MT with good balancing, I imagine you will most likely l be okay. I would say don't go to cheap with the tire selection. Reviews online should help with the selection and review process.

    • @NVSTRZ34
      @NVSTRZ34  Před 3 lety +2

      @@ToOpen6seven I don't consider it a deal breaker at all. There are cheap workarounds if needed. For instance, Treaty Oak (company) offers cheap spacers you can run to level yourself out. There are multiple cheap workarounds. Also worth mentioning, normally, this issue is augmented when LIFTING the vehicle. So, if you plan to keep it stock height, probably wouldn't be an issue.
      My only final thoughts are this (and this was a learning experience for me)... I preferred to get a no frills GX460 (no rear suspension bags and what I thought was no KDSS). ALL GX460's come with KDSS (can't escape it). Forget buying a GX with bags (its less of a headache and cheaper for most). When buying a GX, look for any leaks around the KDSS hydraulic rams (like what I had in the video). Avoid if possible. A KDSS LEAK (not lean) is a much more challenging issue. Luckily, mine is not really much of a problem and if it did end up being an issue, I have a plan of attack. A non-functioning KDSS can make the car seem a little more unbalanced during much higher speed turns than normal.
      The ONLY other thing I wanted to call out to help if I may... if you plan on towing with yours, I would consider adding a universal transmission cooler. You can get away with doing this very cheaply and will greatly reduce any towing issues.
      Hope this helps. Ask away with anything else you might have a question on. Its been a learning experience. Would be happy to pass along my thoughts.

      The difference between AWD and 4WD can get a bit long winded, but Lexus does a great job describing the differences (with pros and cons) in the summary and link I am sharing below. Important to note that the GX 460 is a FULL TIME 4WD vehicle.
      "All-wheel drive, which is available on vehicles that are based on a car platform, offers the best of both worlds as far as traction and fuel economy, since it only engages all four wheels when its advanced technology senses the need (through wheel slippage) and therefore uses less fuel. Full-time four-wheel drive, which is used on truck-platform vehicles, powers all four wheels at the same time, all of the time. One advantage it offers over AWD is a 4-Low setting, which can be necessary while towing a heavy trailer or driving off-road or in deep snow (whereas AWD is preferable in light snow, ice, or loose sand over pavement)."
