Trekking accross Storsteinsfjellet and Swedish Lapland - 2017

- For my 5th Norway trip I planned a trekking trip from Katterat up to Abisko in Sweden. I realized just in time that exactly at this time the Fjällräven Classic will be take place on the Kungsleden trail. So I changed my route because I did not want to go along with 2,000 other trekkers. That was a wise decision. The route via Hunddalshytta, Cunojavrihytta, Unna Allakas, and then back via Hoiganvaggi, Stuor Kärpel up to Riksgränsen was a wonderful tour, where I did not meet many people. For this, I was able to enjoy nature in all its beauty.

Totally what I needed after a long day at work. Heading up to the fjällen in august for a few weeks in total. This video was perfect with it’s calm tempo ”the fjällen tempo” and no obscene music that ruins the beauty! I loved it!!

Lapland ist wirklich sehr schön. Die Strecke die ich wählte, ist abseits des Kungsleden und nicht so überlaufen. In den ersten zwei Tagen in Norwegen bin ich niemandem begegnet. Auf schwedischer Seite in der Hütte Unna Allakas hatte es drei, vier Trekker. Auf dem Weiterweg bis Riksgränsen traf ich nur noch eine Hand voll Leute. Danke für's Reinschauen und deine netten Worte! Wiederum eine starke Leistung und tolle Landschaft, wenn auch mit authentisch scandinavischem Wetter. Ich denke aber, Du hattest viel Spaß. Ich kann übrigens fürs Furten Neoprensocken (fürs Surfen oder Tauchen) sehr empfehlen. Je nach Länge und Schwierigkeit der Furt ein komfortables oder sogar sicherheitsrelevantes Item, dass ich nicht mehr missen möchte. Zudem kann man die im Camp auch gut in den Campschuhen bei sehr feuchten Bodenverhältnissen tragen, die Füße bleiben jedenfalls immer trocken und warm. Viel Spaß weiterhin, wir ziehen in 7 Wochen wieder los ins Børgefjell.
Danke fürßs Reinschauen und deinen Kommentar. Ich hab natürlich Schuhe zum Furten. Meine Solerunner habe ich leider in einer Hütte liegenlassen. Der zweite Schuh (neopren) war mir zu schwer. Jetzt tun´s auch billige Clogs. Die sind leicht, gehen zum Furten und sind am Abend ideal. Das Børgefjell hatte ich bereits mal geplant. Hab mich schliesslich umentschieden weil ich dafür wohl zu wenig Zeit habe. Ich bin in 7 Wochen auch wieder unterwegs;-) Wir hören sicher voneinander - god tur!

Der Regen zaubert eine wundervolle Stimmung ... mich wundert immer wieder, warum man kaum auf andere Menschen trifft, wenn man bei Regen wandert.

Hallo Iris, vielen Dank für's Schauen. Regentouren habe sicher eine spezielle Atmosphäre, wie auch der Nebel.
Ich plane alle Touren in Norwegen für den Regen. Wenn's anders kommt, umso besser. In der Rondane 2015 war's etwas gar nass. Ich hab sie trotzdem in guter Erinnerung. Die Hütten kann man nicht mieten, aber einfach nutzen. Und zwar als Mitglied des DNT (vergünstigt) aber auch ohne Mitgliedschaft. Als Mitglied kann man einen Schlüssel beziehen und kann dann auch die verschlossenen Hütten öffnen. Hat es bereits Leute in der Hütte, darf man sie gegen Entgelt auch benutzen. In bewirtschafteten Hütten hat man sowieso Zutritt. Alle Hütten sind verpflichtet, die Leute aufzunehmen. Dann kann es schon mal passieren, dass man im Gang oder im Holzraum übernachtet. Hier zwei wichtige Links, falls du dich weiter informieren willst. Ich könnte dir noch viel mehr Informationen zu Norwegen geben, falls du mehr brauchst. Seit letztem Jahr kann man in gewissen Hütten sogar online Plätze reservieren.

Aber das Planen hat keine Eile, da ich frühestens nächstes Jahr so lange hier weg komme.
Vielleicht darf ich zwischenzeitlich dein grosszügiges Angebot annehmen, und die eine oder andere Frage stellen?

das setzt mich ja gleich etwas unter Druck😉.
Mit einer besseren Kamera sollten die Videos ja besser werden. Ich weiss aber, dass die Person hinter der Kamera und das Fachwissen noch wichtiger ist als die Ausrüstung. Sehr gute Kamera ist nicht gleich sehr guter Film. Ich bin ein absoluter Anfänger und möchte mich längerfristig eher von der typischen Outdoor-Scene etwas entfernen und versuchen, mehr in Richtung Dokumentationen zu gehen. Eventuell auch ein Mix von beidem. Rausgehen in die Natur und etwas zeigen. Nicht das Zelt, die Ausrüstung usw. Vielleicht einen Vogel, Insekt oder die Jahreszeiten an ein und derselben Stelle. Ich war in letzter Zeit mehrere Male im Ruggeller Riet und konnte Feldhasen, Hermeline und Vögel beobachten, die ich sonst nicht sah.
Wenn ich dir beim Planen deiner Norwegen-Reise helfen kann, mache ich das sehr gerne. Ich möchte auch dieses Jahr eine Tour unternehmen. Ich habe das Børgefjell schon länger im Visier, bin mir aber noch nicht ganz sicher. Normalerweise hatte ich um diese Zeit bereits alles geplant. Dieses Jahr war's komplizierter weil ich vier Wochen Sommerferien am Stück habe.
Auch ich wünsche dir interessante Motive und bin gespannt auf deinen nächsten Film.

wenn sich das nur auch andere auf YT zu Herzen nehmen würden, dass der Kameramann die guten Videos macht, und nicht das Equipment - es gäbe viel bessere Filme hier zu sehen ;-))
Du hast bereits einen eigenen Stil, der sehr elegant und professionell ist, mich hast du bereits überzeugt ... und mit sensiblen Tieraufnahmen wirst du in eine Fersehreife Klasse aufsteigen, du hast das Zeug dazu! Im Ruggeller Ried war ich zwar häufig, habe aber noch nie ein Hermelin beobachtet, da beneide ich dich beinahe ein wenig ;-)
Tierbeobachtung erfordert allerdings seeehr viel Zeit. Ich treffe oft Vogelbeobachter am Bodensee, die müssen viel Geduld und gewaltige Objektive mitbringen.
Hast du dir das 100-400 nun auch gegönnt?
Als ich mir als erste Kamera die Lumix G70 kaufte, übte ich ebenfalls zuerst 8 Monate lang, bevor ich ein Video veröffentlichte - schliesslich will man sein Gerät beherrschen ;-)) Eigentlich fand ich es eine spannende Zeit, war viel am experimentieren (aber genauso häufig am fluchen, hahaha).
Fährst / fliegst du jedes Jahr nach Norwegen?
Ich stelle es mir überwältigend vor - diese unendliche Weite und unzähligen Bergseen :-)
Unsere Alpen sind ja genauso sensationell, aber für eine Oma wie mich leider etwas gar steil, denn wo ich als junge Frau war, komme ich jetzt nicht mehr hoch :-(
Macht nix - unsere Berge bestehen ja nicht nur aus Falknis und Matterhorn :-D))
Meine nächsten Videos sind bereits seit Monaten nicht-gelistet hochgeladen, aber aus Zeitmangel wollte ich sie noch nicht veröffentlichen.

Hallo Monika, das 100-400 habe ich leider noch nicht. Ich hätte es dieses Wochenende wieder gut gebrauchen können. Ich konnte vier Rehe filmen, die direkt auf mich zurannten. Das ging allerdings mit dem 28-280 sogar besser. Aber die Feldhasen die ich wieder beobachten und auch filmen konnte, wären wohl noch etwas besser geworden. Ich bin zur Zeit auch noch ziemlich hilflos am fotografieren oder setze die Kamera wenn's pressiert auf iA. Aber die G9 ist eine tolle Kamera und ich werde weiter üben.
Leider habe ich nicht alle Aufnahmen auf dem Stativ gemacht und ärgerte mich nachher darüber. Aber doch lieber einen verwackelten Hasen als gar keinen. Ich habe mir zum Ziel gesetzt, das Ruggeller Riet noch öfters zu besuchen und über das ganze Jahr eine kleine Doku zu machen. Im Mai blühen die Sibirischen Lilien und im Sommer die wilden Gladiolen. Dazu hoffentlich noch ein paar Tieraufnahmen. Zur Zeit hat es wieder Kiebitze. Ein sehr interessanter Vogel mit eigenartigen Lauten und akrobatischen Flugeinlagen. Ich war letztes Wochenende zwei mal um 4.45 Uhr aufgestanden und konnte schöne Szenen einfangen.
Für das Tele muss ich etwas sparen. Ich werde mir das auf Weihnachten gönnen. Seit 2013 war ich jedes Jahr in Norwegen und möchte auch dieses Jahr eine Tour unternehmen.

Very nice! I walked the same tour in 2015, started at Bjørnfjell station to Hunndalshytta and then almost the same route as you. Didnt walk the Hoiganvaggi route then, but followed the border to Stugor Kärpel then back to Riksgrensen. Walked the Hoiganvaggi route later same year, but the other direction, towards Abisko. Did't stay in the cabins, but camped near by (and re-supplied at Unna Allakas). I think we even carried similar backbacks (Norrøna Recon pack or maybe yours is the Para Ranger?) and maybe even the same tent (Hilleberg Soulo?) + the Delorme Inreach SE . :-)

I use a Soulo since 2011, the Inreach SE I bought for my Saltfjellet trip in 2014 and the Para Ranger I bought already used in an auction. All stuff has proved its worth on several trips. atb Heini

Hi Paul, thanks for watching and your comment - I'm a little late with my response. I started at the train station in Katterat and first walked up to Hunddalen. From there to Cunojavryhytta (see the map on ut.no ). From there in direction North passing the Swedish border line until the cabin Unna Allakas (the hard part of the trip due to the rain). After a short rest I headed along the valley in direction Abisko. Between Rovvidievva and Abiskojaure I went up in this long valley (Hoiganvaggi) to the cabin Stuor Kärpel. (the names are written a little different in every map). From there on the last day over Katterjaurestugan to Katterjok and Riksgränsen at the Swedish border. On the penultimate day I felt on my hand a slippery stone. My hand was swollen and I could'nt sleep all night long. So I was glad to finish in about 10 km. That was certainly one of my more demanding trips I made in Norway/Sweden. Often without markings and traces and I didn't encounter many people.

Thanks for your comment. You're right. In bad weather conditions sometimes it's hard to walk alone. But anyway I prefer to do solo trips.
More easy to be alone often, as you say in bad weather it´s a bit harder and not optimal if you get unlucky and injure yourself. But I'm on the alone thought

Hallo Joachim, danke fü'rs Reinschauen und deinen Kommentar. Der Deuter war grundsätzlich nicht zu klein. Auf grösseren Touren haben sich meine alten Isomatten bewährt, die ich jeweils unter das Zelt schiebe. Man kann sie auch sonst vielseitig einsetzen. Zum Schlafen nütze ich eine Matte von Exped. Die alten Isomatten sind sperrig und ich musste sie jeweils aussen anzurren. Der Norröna ist so gross, dass sie gut in den Rucksack passen. Ich schiebe sie (zwei Stück) wie eine grosse Röhre in den Sack. Darin hat es noch genügend Platz und es ist darin alles gut geschützt. Beim Einchecken musste ich die Matten immer wegnehmen, jetzt sind sie im Sack und bieten guten Schutz gegen Stösse. Ich kaufte den Norröna gebraucht für CHF 200.00 in neuwertigem Zustand. Da musste ich zuschlagen. Gruss Heini

Hi, thanks for watching. Most paths in Norway are marked and you can often see traces. So this was not harder then my other trips in Norway. Only the last two days there where neither paths nor marks at all. But I could follow the course of the valley. Going without paths is more exhausting and you have to be careful. atb Heini

Hi, thanks for watching and your comment! I'm very satisfied with my boots. They are made for mountaineering and are quite heavy with a sturdy sole (made for crampons). I personally like them and they stay dry - even on swampy terrain. But they are quit expensive.

Hallo Reto, ich hatte letztes Jahr meine letzte Solotour in den Dividalen Nationalpark geplant die ich dann leider nicht antreten konnte wegen den Einreisebestimmungen und Quarantäne. Mit 60 sollte man keine Solo-Touren mehr machen. Ich werde mich jetzt aufs Fotografieren und Filmen in der Schweiz konzentrieren und hoffentlich bald wieder kurze Tagestouren mit Uebernachtungen machen. Oh, this is also a great pack and I think they are about the same. Both were developed for the military. They are not to big. If you have less stuff you can compress them, but you always have enough space for your gear.

Yes, you're right. I was walking along Storsteinsfjellet. I was searching for the name of the norwegian part of my trip between Katterat and Cunojavryhytta at Ut.no. So Storsteinsfejllet was the closest to my trip. Probably it is also difficult to anderstand the different meanings of fjell, fjellet, fjellene. Sometimes a area is called fjell, but can be be named also as fjellet?
But I see now, that Storsteinsfjellet is only the mountain and not the area around. Anyway, it was a beautiful trip in Norway and Sweden. Thanks for watching and your comment - Heini
Thanks, now I get the logic behind your use of Storsteinsfjellet! By the way, fjell = mountain, fjellet = the mountain, fjellene = the mountains. The area between Katterat and Cunojaure doesn’t have a single name. The first cabin where you stayed is in Hundalen (dalen is Norwegian for valley). Then you had a short rest in a very small cabin in the higher altitude valley of Oallavagge (vagge is Saami for valley). Then you descended through Sälkadalen, passing along Storsteinsfjellet, before arriving at Cunojaure (jaure is Saami for lake). Thanks for the video, enjoyed it a lot!

Hi Heini Hefti, I really enjoyed you inspiring video. Just like you, I've visited Norway a couple of times now and I was wondering about the use of the DNT-key. I know that there are a couple of options on getting a key and becoming a member (english.dnt.no/join/) but, I always wonder whether I can keep re-using the key when I would only get a membership for one year? What formula do you use? Since you have a jacket with the DNT-logo, I automatically assume you are a member. Thanks again for your video. Greetings from Belgium.
Hi Gert, y're right, I'm a member of DNT. Since my first trip in 2013 I always renew my membership. The key I ordered on the page of DNT. For that you have to be a member and you have once to pay a deposit of 100 Kr and they will send it by mail. If you don't renew the membership you can (have to) send it back and they will refund the 100 Kr.

If you are in Oslo at the end of a trip you can reposit the key also in the DNT store which is not far away of the railway station. Its a interesting store where you can by maps and equipment... greetings from Switzerland
I wish we could have rest stations Like you do. BUT Sadly they wouldn't last very long due to the few unresponible types who live in this country. They would abuse them and or simply destroy them.
I am not from Norway, but I love the system they have with the cabins that are accessible to everyone. And it works very well. In every country there are always a few people who have an urge to destroy everything. It's the reason why we have prohibitions. We live on earth, not in heaven... thanks for watching!

Hi Rick, thanks for your comment - I appreciate it! The sound is always the most difficult point with filming. With a small cam it's nearly impossible to have a good sound in windy conditions. And it takes a lot of time to install am external microfon. So I add music instead of having a bad sound. Heini
I watch many outdoor videos.....kayaking, skiing, surfing , camping, etc...................its very unusual to see one of the quality you do..........if its too windy just put a rag over the mic, the music takes you out of the film
