Will Perennial Ryegrass Work In YOUR Lawn??

  • The transformation of my front lawn and the overall appearance is thanks to perennial ryegrass, but will it work for you in your lawn? In today's #askRKLC video I got a question recently about using #sissygrass a little farther south of me and I wanted to touch on the pros and cons of ryegrass and why it may or may not be the best choice for you depending on your location.

Ryan, with Spring nearing, maybe do a segment on grass leaf identification 101 for those starting out with no idea what they have. Show close ups of cool season leaves and how to differentiate. Maybe Allyn could cover warm season. Make overseeding recommendations (if needed) based on post IDed results. ~ mike

I live in Topeka. I have found that given the heat we deal with (and drought for those of us without in ground sprinkler systems) in the summer, rye grass really starts going dormant in early to mid July. It will start to come out of dormancy in mid to end of September. I will say this though, it does very well in spring/fall, and in mild winters it keeps the lawn looking good. Because of all these factors, I tend to keep my rye in the backyard where I have lots of tree cover. In early spring it greens up and fills in well before the canopy develops, and the shade helps it last longer. Unfortunately, the trees have a tendency to drink a lot of water, so as we get into June-July the rye is not only going into dormancy because of heat, but also due to dry conditions. My front/side yard gets good sun though. This past fall I did an aerate and heavy overseed of some fescue blends and KBG. That KGB is really looking really good, and has managed to make some progress during some of the warm periods we have had. Between the KBG and the fescue, I am expecting domination of my neighbors lawns. Also a recommendation to this Topeka guy... If you haven't yet tried the seaweed and humic blend, give it a shot. I put it down about a month after my overseed, and it really helped the new growth to explode, and I think it is what will help the lawn to come out strong this spring.

I'm up here in the PNW, off the Puget Sound, and yes, PR is fantastic grass here. It's odd, the home developers lay down TF sod with new homes. Then moss sets in during cooler rainier season, and if the owner doesn't aggressively take care of it, clumps of the TF die, and you wind up with a very lumpy lawn filled in with moss, because the healthy TF doesn't spread and the moss has no competition. But overseeding with PR or a blend of PR and TF makes for a very robust self-healing lawn with normal maintenance (though you'll have to stay up on killing back the moss during the rainiest seasons).

Yeah it’s pretty difficult to keep in Kansas City. Lost some in some extended 90F+ periods without rain even though I was irrigating. So easy to germinate in the fall but really can’t take the full sun heat too well where I’m at. I have a hybrid lawn though with rye kbg and tttf and it looks pretty great most of the time. I overseed in the fall with rye and tttf. The rye brings a magnificent color into the stand imo.

Another thing that helps with the summer heat stress on the PRG is an irrigation system... Basically a "must have" for my area from June through mid-September no matter what type of grass you're using. I've been keeping to a blend of 30% Dwarf Kentucky Blue/70% Dwarf Perennial Rye for a couple of years and I find it easier to maintain a deeper green during the stress periods. Also, we tend to get less major snow accumulation in Toronto than our neighbours in parts of New York, so the "winter Kill" without a constant cover of snow is harder on PRG. I believe the small amount of KGB helps me get a deep green look quicker in Spring.

Hell ya. I’m up in the Boston area and looking to go 100% perennial ryegrass this year. I tested it out a little late last season and loved what I saw. I’m planning on using seedsuperstore. They have a few varieties, as well as, a ryegrass blend. Which do you think I’m better off going with? Picking a single strain or going with the blend?
    Also...
Just moved in to my new house at the end of August 2019. So I got a few fertilizer applications down and some liquid micro nutrients. I then aerated and overseeded. I noticed the difference before the weather turned but it is definitely not where I want it to be. I still have weeds and moss. My main weed I believe is some sort of dark red ground ivy(haven’t really been able to figure out exactly what it is). My question is should I throw down a preemergent (Prodiamine) coming up here next month? Or should I do a spring overseeding? Just looking for your opinion. Thanks.

I redid a section of my yard last Spring, using fescue but also annual rye. I included the latter since it comes up faster and the reason for redoing that portion of yard was due to drainage problem. I should have done more research since the annual rye is sprouting seeds. Does this mean I can expect to see it come back next Spring. And, if so, how can I get rid of it?

Great video Ryan. I am bringing in lots of Parkside Ryegrass into my lawn this year here in MN. I am located east of the twin cities and hope the cold climate doesnt completely destroy it every year but with that being said, I am motivated to put the time in to repair it when needed. This year will be a test run for me.
My turf right now consists of KBG, Fescue and Rye(the normal blend.) I heavily dethatched the lawn last fall and this spring to tear it up a bit so that I could get more Parkside Rye coming through. With 4 children I didn't want to completely start over with the lawn from scratch because I wanted them to have a lawn to play in. Every year I will be heavily dethatching multiple times and will be overseeding with rye to get my results. I'll keep you posted on the progress.
Do you have experience with Barenbrug perennial Parkside Rye? Also what kind of Ryegrass do you use? Great looking lawn brother, love the videos! Keep on rocking the craft my friend! Your lawn looks mint!
Also if you have time, please give me your top 3-5 tips for Ryangrass success 😉

I'm in the moutains of western NC and the average high temp in July is 79 degrees. Will sissy grass work in a lawn that gets say 70% shade (I have a few tall limbed up trees.) I would be starting with bare earth. Winter conditions include the possiblity of snow. Each winter we will see a handful of days in the single digits but mostly the temps are in the lower 20s and upper teens.

I’m in west Texas (midland Tx) I had a neighbor grow the P-Rye grass in north Texas and I loved it. My yard in west Tx is small and will be shaded a lot by a fence on three sides and building on other sides so in curious it it will do well. I know west Tx isn’t a good area for it. But since it’s going to be shaded for so much of the day I’m hoping it will be ok.

I am huge soccer fans and love seeing the turf of European soccer fields. Perennial Rye grass looks amazing to me and would love to plant this. @rudkinp00 Před 3 lety

If mostly weeds and yuck then just roundup all of it. Dont know if you have warm season crap in your yard but summer is good time to kill everything so you can seed in the fall. As for what grass depends on size and effort you will put into it. If you just want grass then buy a bag(s) at big box store for your situation. If you want more elite seed then you have to figure out what you want and how to make it thrive.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  Před 2 lety

You may run into some fungus issues with it in your region. Tall fescue would be more common in that area. Not to say that it doesn't also have fungus from time to time but rye can be wiped out pretty quickly by pythium if you're not keeping up on certain maintenance.
