    Wooohooo George working on a b47 engine finally.
    Ive driven b47 engine and they are awesome. If looked after well.
    Me and wife bought a 2016 X4 xfrive 2.0d which has the b47 engine, only problem those cars have is 02 sensor issues, which mine has. Going to get it sorted by big motoring world since its covered by them.
    Ever since 3 weeks ago my wife crashed my e92 320d been so down.... i miss the car so much because i dont have the time or money to repair it. In the end i had to say goodbye to it. :( 2013 to 2022 r.i.p

    I am not a fan of Bosch oil filters, I have had them fall apart after only a few thousand miles. On my N57 330d I used to use SCT filters as they have a plastic supporting mesh inside which keeps them in shape better.

    I don't think there is any "need" to fill more than 75-80 % of the interval of the dip stick.
    Because, a little bit, of how you drive you can get diesel into the oil, and then it's not very good when it's "overfilled".

    Well on my e39 M47 I change the oil at 8000Km but also change the cabin filters air filter and fuel filter. Is no longer a good practice with these B47 engines? I guess you agree that the service interval should be half what bmw recommends nowadays... I also noticed that you usually don't pre-lube the oil filter. Some say is always a good practice and is not so much trouble anyway so why not? Lookin forward to see more serios work on this B47, you know what I mean, no road bearings or blown head gasket nasty stuff, the usual coolant leaks, oil leaks, cracked plastics the kind of issues N47 have...or perhaps none of that. They say B47 and B series overall should be more reliable than previous N but will they reach at least M reliability or... appliances on wheels...
    Now, I understand this is not your car but if I'm right about service intervals and items that should be replaced perhaps you could convince your friend to maintain the proper way this B47 otherwise any upcoming issues will be irrelevant in terms of reliability of the engine👍

    • @GeorgeAusters

      I’ve done a full service on this.. Oil and filter, cabin filter, fuel filter, air filter, fuel filter and brake fluid👍🏻

    • @mikikum1
      @mikikum1 Před rokem +1

      I would cut the service interval recommended by BMW in third, i.e. no longer than 6K miles. With the additional note that the time between services must not be longer than one year.

    • @florinlepadatu5648
      @florinlepadatu5648 Před rokem

      @@mikikum1 yes, but sooner is also not good, an over maintenance could mean that the car strives to stay on the road and requires a lot of attention, as always extremes are not ok imho...

      @florinlepadatu5648 Před rokem

      @@GeorgeAusters I do apologies as I understand it is the first time you touched this car The idea was to see what issues develop an well maintain B47 engine, Already heard some rumors about the O2 sensor but I guess we'll see if is the case here

    • @mikikum1
      @mikikum1 Před rokem +1

      @@florinlepadatu5648 I don't think that changing oil every 6K miles (and at least once a year) is "overmaintenance". On older cars the recommendation in most cases was exactly that - oil service every 6000 km or yearly. And given that new car engines work under a lot more pressure than older ones (due to turbochargers, direct injection, DPF and so on), they should actually have oil change more frequently, rather than the other way around IMHO.

  • @mikikum1
    @mikikum1 Před rokem +1

    I am wondering if the timing chain problem was sorted out on the B series diesel engines (B37 & 47) compared to the N47? Some people, including mechanics, say the chain is good now whereas others claim there still is the problem.

    • @leiflillandt1488
      @leiflillandt1488 Před rokem +1

      I guess (!), you will have problems with the timing chains when you drive more than 30,000 km (18? Kmiles) without changing oil... And then some people drive 5 km 2x a day... I guess these drivers get diesel into the oil too... Something must fail rather sooner than later!
      It would be interesting to know what issues these people had (long?) before they had to replace the chains.
