- Ever wonder what bedding plane markings are and how they form? Well bedding plane markings are markings on the surfaces and/or soles of bedding planes that form by current action, deformation, or biological activity. In this video, I go over the different types of sole and surface markings formed by currents and deformation. There are two main types of sole markings caused by currents: scour marks and tool marks. Flue casts are common scour marks that have bulbous like noses and indicate flow direction. Tool marks include groove casts, which are lineations that indicate the azimuth of flow but not the flow direction, bounce marks, which are caused by saltating grains, brush marks, which are caused by random brushing of the mud surface by grains carried by a current, prod marks, which are more of a penetration of the mud surface and have an abrupt termination that indicates flow direction, and roll marks which are formed by rolling coiled shells that leave behind impact marks like the tread on a tire. Mud crack casts are also sole markings but are not formed by a current. Mud cracks can become filled with overlain sand that lithifies and preserves a cast of the mud cracks which indicate a subaerially exposed, dry environment. Load casts & flame structures are also sole markings but are caused by deformation rather than a current. Lastly, surface markings include rill & swash marks formed in the swash zones of beaches, and pits formed by rain & hail.

What a great start to my day just laying in bed learning about bed plane markings in yet another one of your very fascinating videos, a great use of my time. Such a great pleasure for me as always to learn with you. Out of all the teachers I’ve ever had, you’re definitely my favorite Rachel. 😊❤😉👍
Thank you so much for the amazing comment, I am so glad I am your fav teacher! That means the world to me ;)

Thank you!❤️
Thank you for your hard work.
Of course! I enjoy it ;) Thanks for the comment :D

Gotta raise your metrics some how haha
This was incredibly helpful for me! Learning about sedimentary structures in my geology course and sole marks just did not make sense to me until this video! Thank you!!
Thanks! I am so glad you found it helpful :D
Another great episode! Did you specify sedimentary rocks? I know that’s what you were talking about but others may not. You might have. I don’t hear well LOL.
Well at the top of the video I mentioned this video is part of the sedimentology & stratigraphy playlist so I hope they got that ;D haha
Thanks for the comment and words of encouragement as always Steven! Glad you liked it ;)
That Boggs textbook is really great. Apparently out of print, though. Im taking intro strat/strig and he photocopies thr pages from his book for us haha. Thanks for the great info, Racheal, youre awesome
These were always my favorite sed rock samples 😁
Mine too! The fact that they were on the bottom of the bed always interested me :D
lmfao i see the periodic blanket now hahahahaha amazzzing.
probably the worst when you have a fever though eh
mud is the coolest omg i want more mud and i don't care what the haters say. Maaaaaaad for mud
love you
Fantastic!
Thanks! :D
