  • In the 80's Games Workshop toyed with plenty of ideas for new races and whilst some like the Skaven stuck, plenty like the Fimir didn't. But what became of the Chaos Snakemen range sculpted by Chaz Elliot, and why didn't they get any official lore? And did GW ever embrace other serpentine slitherers over the years?
    Correction: I mistakenly claim that the demon inhabiting the Blade of Laer was Lucius the Eternal when in fact that is a very different character!

    When I was painting at the Low Pavement studio 1987-89 the Chaos Snakemen had already been consigned to the past. Fimir were still a thing and around (briefly) and I painted a few sculpts for adverts in White Dwarf but never got to see any Snakeman in the studio. All of the sculpts in your video from 3.11-3.35 are mostly from the 87-88 period and after the Snakeman period and I was part of the team who painted them. I knew of Snakemen as I had some in my own collection from before I started painting at the studio but when I asked if they would surface again no one in the studio would talk about them and it was accepted that they were no longer part of the Warhammer Fantasy world. It was nice to see Tim Prow pay homage to them with Diehard Miniatures. All the best, Darren Matthews

    One of the races you mentioned in the caption, the Fimir is one of my favorite fantasy races ever. I was pretty disappointed when the new HeroQuest edition had swapped em with more Deep One looking fishmen due to copyright issues. Magic cyclopean lizardmen forever! In the lore they were the favorites of the Chaos Gods before they tossed them aside in favor of "more amusing" races such as the humans.

    • @dmeep
      @dmeep Před rokem +2

    I love your series of Warhammer history videos. Takes me back!! Thank you for these. In reference to other Warhammer Snakemen, there are two kinds of Snakemen in the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader RP game that was published by Fantasy Flight. There were the Guardians of the Vault in the second part of the Warpstorm Trilogy Campaign ('The Vault of Secrets') for Rogue Trader - these, along with their boss The Archivist, were serpentine swordsmen (though the Archivist was female) of great skill and lethality. They were sinister and awesome and killed some important PCs and their mates. Additionally, there was a race of snakemen listed in the Koronus Bestiary (sort of a Monster Manual for rogue Trader) - they were called Sslyth (I think) and were actually kind of a neutral mercenary force, often employed by the Dark Eldar - they had four arms and wielded lots of guns and blades. Also very cool.

    • @TheAshrole

      Now that I watch the end of the video, I see the Sslyth here - my bad - should pay more attention. Just got a tad excited is all :) But the Vault Guardians and the Archivist references still stand as a new addition here :)

      Would be perfect for Killteam or to throw into Necromunda - those small scale skirmish games are great for a single box faction plus a couple of characters, maybe a vehicle.
      And if they are popular they can always be expanded into a full faction later on.
      Sslyth mercenaries / pirates being a standslone faction for the smaller games, but remaining a sub-faction the Dark Eldar can "hire" (as more than just a single Bodyguard in the Archons Court) seems like such an easy way to expand the lore / Xenos races of the 40k setting that you have to wonder why it's not been done.
      Same as the Tau - perfectly set up for introducing new races.

    Really just to add to what Jacob Turner said, Snakemen were one of the particularly prominent and atmospheric villains in the Fighting Fantasy universe.
