We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who made the leap from city life to an off-grid homestead in Southern Arizona. We've started this lifestyle equipped only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
We’d like to share our journey of starting a sustainable homestead from scratch with all its ups, downs, and lessons learned. Watch us take on the challenge of modern homesteading, off-grid life, and turning this barren piece of land into a desert oasis.

Jess doesn't talk much, but when she does ... it's profound. I appreciate so much that perspective as I try to live it also. So much time is spent in our head and not our heart. Thanks so much for sharing that with everyone, Jess!! 💙

Jess, I was was waiting to hear you say something , and at timestamp 12:04 - timestamp 14:38 for the next 3 minutes and 42 seconds you described EXACTLY what I was waiting to hear you say. All the things you spoke of about the heart; the gentle whisper, a soft light guiding the way that lifts you from the darkness and gives you a sense of peace, joy, love, comfort, an assurance. You, Jess, just described what happens when you, me, we, us let GOD take the lead and rely on HIM. GOD BLESS, you both. I heard some words a long time ago, that went this way: GOD, without man, is still GOD... Man, without GOD, is nothing.

I think this is my favourite vlog from you guys so far.
Thoughtful, mindful, reflective and forward looking.
The hard work will always be with you, it comes with the territory of off-gridding/homesteading, but there should be moments of reflection and it's good to see you sharing them.
Jess, always good to hear your inner thoughts, they come from a place of contemplation.
You both look so at ease, even with the mighty challenges storm season has given you.
Just what was needed for all of our (the viewers) anxieties after the last few weeks of seeing your hardships, thank you for the emotional salve guys. ❤

For weed whacking, get a Tyvek disposable suit ($10-12 at your local hardware store). These can last for a long time if you just brush off the burrs when you're finished and use them again. They don't tear like the paper ones. Since they are white, light weight and cool enough they can be used on a hot/warm day.

You are so right about listening to your heart. Your mind is a selfish, agressive thing. If you have any kind of addiction you know that your heart wants to help but your mind just wants what it wants. It is very ego centered. I think being quiet and still and trying to let your heart speak is so important. It is very quiet and you have to listen very closley.. Thanks

    Three things:
    1. By giving the pig weed a “Chelsea chop”, you’ll find it gets bushier and flowers later. It might last longer and therefore provide that soil shade a little longer.
    2. Humbly suggest you might want to get some disposable coveralls for the weed whacking. Big A online retailer has a pack of 5 for $40. Maybe a face shield as well. 😄.
    3. Jessica - very wise words. Life is a marathon not a sprint so you are wise to take the long view.

You opened the window of yourself to all of us sharing the contents of your heart. I was so blessed to listen to this video. You are the first person on CZcams channels I watch, and I watch a lot of channels, who hit the nail on the head with regards to what should lead us. Our heart. Thank you for being so open and transparent. Your other half was so lucky to find you and hitch his wagon to your heart. • @kayashmore4296

Jess your talk reminded me of when Jesus and the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart and I turned my life over to Christ.
He is my Heart and Soul and there is no turning back for me. I want to serve Him and live for Him and that has given me real purpose in my life.
Satan and the world still is there to attack me and wants me to turn against God, and good, and doing what is right. Many times I become tempted and it is easier to do what everyone else is doing. I am happiest serving God and listening to the Holy Spirit teach me what I need to know by following God's Word, the Bible as my text book.
The Bible never steers me wrong and it always gets me back on track. I am so grateful for God's Son, Jesus who came to earth to be our Saviour and voluntarily gave his life's Blood as the sacrifice for our sins, not just mine but for everyone else's in the world. It is a gift. We can accept it or reject his gift. He will not force it on us but it will not be ours if we don't accept it and receive it.
Once we say yes the Holy Spirit is the treasure that is part of the gift. We are never alone after that. The Holy Spirit lives within us and leads us if we listen to him he answers us.
God's wants us to be happy and He created this world perfect but sin, the rejection of God's love gift, His Son, Jesus has allowed Satan to ruin peace and joy and cause a lot of hate and distruction world wide.
If we turn to Jesus and ask for forgiveness we can become His Children and be adopted into the family of God. Who doesn't want to be a child of a King?
God owns the cattle on a thousand hills
The wealth in every mine, He owns the rivers and the rocks and rills, The sun and stars that shine, Wonderful riches more than tongue can tell, He is my Father so they’re mine as well, He owns the cattle on a thousand hills, I know that He will care for me.
(It was a chorus we sang in Sunday School but oh so true).

    • @AnnFBug
      @AnnFBug Před 2 lety

Me too! Thanks for taking time to post this. I find increasingly that people who don’t want to believe in God are tiptoeing up to the Bible, taking the helpful bits, and applying them to life without giving God any credit. It’s a bit like seeing a beautiful garden and cutting yourself a bunch of flowers from it , to take away, rather than enjoying the plant as it is with its roots intact. I don’t know whether Jess is in that category as she didn’t mention God, either to keep the atheists among us sweet or because she is not a believer. But it sure was a Christian sounding message.

Consciousness creates reality. A lot of researchers theorize that not only does the falling tree NOT make a sound if no observer is present, the forest doesn't even exist. Letting go of all negative thoughts and feelings, forgiving, and feeling love for everyone/thing, will allow the mind to tap the universal energy we are all a part of, so you can manifest anything needed or wanted. ✌🏻♥

Many people have called me crazy for selling our home and moving to undeveloped land. There are ideally so many reasons for this decision but mainly because it's what my heart needs. I have the utmost respect for your efforts. One thing you need to think about is that the straw in the mud is for strength by providing fiber to hold the mud together -- too much straw holds too much moisture and weakens the mud. A good balance of straw to mud will make the mud predominate and keep the straw as the strength that holds it together. You can add other things as long as it serves as another bonding agent. Right now, when you look at your structures, you see a lot of straw on the surface ... the mud is behind it because the mud sloughed off. Adobe works because its clay - a less absorbent material. Dries hard as a rock and just as brittle. The straw tempers that brittleness and prevents cracking. Cracks allow moisture to get in. Adobe will weaken and crumble unless something like straw is present to prevent the cracks. All things I'm sure you know but you have way too much straw in the mix. Just look at it. Go to your neighbor's house and look at theirs. (The Upside of Downsizing). Yes the lime can help - yes the hair is stronger - yes the eggshell is lighter than sand. You do know your stuff but the mix is a little off. Cut back on the amount of straw to clay. Please?

This is an EXCELLENT post! I was busy doing other things while listening to the audio. Your voice (Jess) was very effective and soothing, causing attentive response. I just had to stop what I was doing and see WHO this was speaking these wise words.

I see a lot of green Amaranth, getting weed eaten. The leaves are as rich as spinich, and the seed clusters, are good for the birds. Some people like the tender green shoots. Others pop the seeds like popcorn.
Seeds also can be milled into flour. Southern varieties can reach 6 to 8 feet. Great heat and drought resistant plants, for turning desert, back to lush green grazing land. Can be important to the permaculture life.

I've taken a few days before writing this comment because I think you have enough on your plate as it is. Seeing you whipper snippering into the amaranth (pig weed) was like seeing a group of ducks going through the lettuce patch. You have similar conditions as I have in Chihuahua. Amaranth leaves are one of our extremely valuable edibles along side purslane, mulberry leaves, prickly pear pads, malva, grape leaves, pumpkin leaves flowers and stems, parsley, coriander, wild broccoli and silver beet. In extremely brittle drylands, it's hard to have green leaf variety because of the extreme temperatures and insect pressure. It's the first time we've had a good rainfall in years. My block was covered with torritos (a weed that grows along paths in alkaline compacted soil. It's got nasty spikey ball prickles. I broke all of my general gardening rules and cut most of the block extremely short like you were doing to eliminate the torritos. It was war against the yellow flowers. In general, I mow in strips for greater variety of plants for more resiliency, as leaf trappers in autumn and as animal shelters. I purposely mowed around the amaranth and hand weeded the torritos out of the amaranth islands. I even snap off the tops to prune the amaranth so I get a longer harvest. I eat amaranth leaves boiled and drained. The chickens and rabbits eat it raw. When the amaranth plants are dry, I stomp on them. I grow another variety for seeds. Amaranth only grows in bacteria rich soils. When the soils improve with more fungi, amaranth will not germinate, so don't get overly excited with woodchip mulch. For growing trees in clay soil, I use the method that Geoff Lawton used in Greening the Desert. One plants the so called nitrogen fixers (mezquite, gatuño, huisache, Palo Verde) in circles around a more 'valuable' food tree such as peach, fig, pomegranate, pecan, jujube. The 'valuable' trees have their holes conditioned with compost tea and are heavily mulched. The nitrogen fixers roots drill down through the clay and rock, condition the soil and help the food trees with shade. They grow much faster this way. Most nitrogen fixing trees are sacrificed a few years on. The prickly branches are turned into biochar or placed into soak trenches and covered with prickly pear pads, cardboard and sawdust. With other kinds of weeds such as nightshades, tumble weed, I make compost. Happy gardening along side construction. I've mentioned elsewhere that this was an extremely important video.

Even if you can get an older ATV. you can get a small springtooth plow that you could fallow your weeds under the soil to enrich it with nitrogen and humus from decomposing plants. This will eventually build good soil for you to raise edible crops that you can use and sell your excess for income.

Not only following your heart but also understanding that stumbling blocks are there for a reason. Lessons are hard but needed. The amount of water that may be normal to your area may be changing. You have a wonderful insight Jess, and I am a believer that everything happens for a reason. Trying to think your way through life can be treacherous. Accepting and understanding what reality has been laid at your feet... that is the real lesson.
