  • In this video I take a look at the Robens Wing Tarp, a wing shaped tarp in the Odyssey range, which can be used as a stand alone shelter or with most small tents as an extension porch to the tent.
In the making of this video it is matched up to the Robens Elk River1, a one person tent.
I will follow up with a further video once I’ve used it over a period of time.
The thoughts and actions outlined in the video are personal to me and everyone will need to view things from their own perspective.
I hope you find this video helpful and if you have any question just ask.
Further details of the Robens Wing Tarp can be found in the links at the end.

I use this wing tarp as a stand alone with a bivy bag for autumn/winter camping. At 8:40 : The reinforced patch with velcro is meant to be used with a pole. I place a pole there and wrap the velcro around it for stability. Had some really bad weather with it without any issues. The pegs are a joke, replaced them at instance. This is the best tarp I have owned mainly because of the shape. Great video but keep your hands steady whilst presenting a product. Happy camping!

Thanks for info, one of these days I’ll do a bivi camp! Must admit I was surprised the pegs are same on tents, they do that for lightweight gear and pack weight but I always carry extra/stronger pegs anyhow and recent winter camp in Wales with the Robens Buck Creek2 did use additional pegs just to be on safe side!
In fairness my hands were freezing 😂 but usually use tripod which works better 👍🏻

Hi Andy, not many people 'do' tarps and I've not found one yet that I'd be happy with. However, I am impressed with the Odyessey and your review of same. Do you think this would lend itself to most two man tents with adaptions ?

To be honest it would fit any 2 man tent, either semi covering, over the doorway, or just to the side using 2 poles! Very adaptable and I intend using with all my tents when needed. Just looked on Robens website and looks like it’s been discontinued but Alpinetrek.co.uk currently have them in stock and they are a great company to deal with, usually priced competitively.. be careful when looking as there is a smaller version called ‘Robens Trail Wing Tarp’ which is cheaper but smaller, designed for ultra light backpackers…it looks very similar but is smaller!

Good video. Out of interest, what made you go for that shape instead of the more universal rectangle shape?

Cheers…I really just went for it as it fits this tent really well with the wings and colour, but also something different to a rectangular DD tarp that I have .

So, were the chaps you were worried about putting your tarp up in front of the ones in the background with the semi-collapsed tarp in the morning?
Just watched your older OEX tarp video, comparison between the two?
At one point you say tarp comes complete, but earlier in video say it does not come with a pole. Is weight quoted with or without pole?

Ha, yes the same guys….we did have a good laugh about it next day😃 Probably could have worded it a bit better but when talking about it being complete at 0.68kg I meant tarp, guy lines, pegs and bag…..I used some DD poles that I had, fairly robust but not ones I’d use for backpacking, so thinking either using the lighter OEX poles or just using walking poles, although this would mean lower profile set up….must give it a try and see how those options work!
