You first roll for Determined defense, and if the outcome of that is a failure and the unit faces elimination because it cannot retreat, then Desperation Defense will be initiated, all the dash symbols turn into step losses, and you roll for Desperation Defense until the retreat is canceled or the unit(s) doesn't have any steps left.
This is a really fun game! We're playing this right now and on turn 7. Kharkov is still in German hands (me), but will soon fall. FYI: Around 25:50 I noticed you were talking about armored shifts in the fortifications and that they cancel each other out. Armored shifts are never possible in fortification hexes, woods, rough, marsh and cities as well as across rivers...
With less sunlight in the winter I often get into a demotivated funk, which is why the game has been gathering dust in my office for 6 months. I finally remembered - oh yeah - Ukraine 43!
Same game! I just dropped off the face of the Earth mid-game. It's been sitting on my table for 6 months and I'm finally picking it back up. It's very hard to get an auto-victory early in the game. This game will likely end turn 7, which is what the introductory scenario specifies.
Great to see you back! Love relaxing to these playthroughs.
Yea Mike has found his compass 🧭
Yesss! I found this series so fun, I am so happy you are continuing it! Keep it up!!!
That was a very long period of analysis paralysis Mike. ;)
I laughed at that one :)
Yay! He's back!
Great to see you getting back to this.

Cool. Thanks for the clarification.
I am enjoying it on vassal. Unfortunately, you can't find the second edition for less than $200. No thanks.
At 23:00 shouldn’t the Russians on the north of the major river be halved as they attack Lishchansk? 9.5.2
I’d forgotten about this, frozen?

I thought you played through until the Germans had an automatic victory? Or is this a different game?
