    The C-Finder will always be a classic weapon for one of my favorite glitches. So I began firing the weapon at a few cazadors. The weapon showed the final stage where the lines blinked but no laser appeared. So after fighting off the cazadors I head back to freeside and see the beams again but stuck between one side of freeside and near the kings hideout. After multiple saves (and a few fast travels) I had completely forgot that my gun was glitched them out of no where as I finish fast traveling the laser just goes off and kills an entire caesar’s legion attack force in front of me.

      @Quandry1 Před 6 lety +83

      I don't think the specials on some of the important NPC's are really indicative of their capabilities. Their backstories often differ wildly. Fantastic should really have more charisma than brains. House is supposed to be a prodigy level genious but you could say his intelligence stat has degraded along with his body while being in that medical pod of his. The rest are kind of a grab bag for the most part. Granted a 3 intelligence for Benny is probably fitting. He's not nearly as smart as he believes himself and it really shows.

    34:52 when Oxhorn says "The solar panels are now more efficiently capturing sunlight" One key piece of information people constantly overlook about this place that it's not a Solar panel farm its a concentrated solar thermal plant. The reason you are overcome by the blinding light and the computer lady says "Warning re-targeting sequence initiated for reflector banks." is that is how the plant generates power focusing the sun with mirror like reflectors on the towers reactive surface which if using a boiling reactor or even molten salt would produce heat and energy.

    Helios One is a real thing. Goes by a different name though. On I-15 coming from Vegas into California. The wife and I left Vegas to head to Disney land. We stopped in Primm to get gas and continued on the I-15. I had my face buried in my phone looking at and comparing new Vegas maps and cities to the real ones we saw. I looked up in the distance and saw a bright white glow ahead. It was noon on a very clear sunny day yet there was still a bright glow on the horizon.
    As we got closer I saw it. A huge circular field of mirrors shining beams of sun light to a tower located in the center. It was god damn amazing. Even on the bright sunny day, the light coming from the mirrors was distinctly in the form of bright white beams.
    Nipton and Bonnie springs were cool too.

    What I don't understand is why didn't the Brotherhood of Steel and NCR simply agree for the Brotherhood to keep Helios One in exchange for providing the NCR along with the rest of the Mojave with whatever power Helios One is capable of? The NCR and strip would get energy for their citizens, the Brotherhood could keep a dangerous weapon out of the wrong hands, and they both could have avoided the blood shed the battle entailed.

    • @nicholascross3557
      @nicholascross3557 Před 7 lety +55

      Thing is, the Brotherhood know that Helios One is part of a weapon of mass destruction and it's pretty much their _raison d'etre_ to keep such things in safe hands... i.e. their hands. However, the BoS also know that the NCR know that WMDs are the BoS's main gig so when the NCR come sniffing around Helios One, which was occupied by the BoS, their basic doctrine meant they _had_ to try and stop them taking control of the facility, even though they _knew_ a vital part, the rangefinder, was missing. It's always the same for any group that have such extreme views as the Brotherhood do, that those views can and do lead them into situations such that, while others might see a need to compromise, they cannot without betraying their fundamental ideals. Veronica Santangelo understands that the Brotherhood needs to adapt for their very survival, but the prevalent attitude among them is that it's better to sink with all hands while they _do their sworn duty_ than to take to the lifeboats. And it should be said that the NCR should really have learned to respect other peoples boundries by now. Basically, all it needed was there to be one gung-ho idiot on either side and bloodshed becomes as inevitable, ironically, as sunrise.

    • @Quandry1
      @Quandry1 Před 6 lety +20

      Actually. It's even worse than that. They went to Helios 1 on the word of Elijah that it was a weapon without any real confirmation that it was. many of them didn't want to be there and they fought horribly over it at Elijah's command. When they were forced out by the NCR who need power to help drive their movement as well as wanting to know just why the BoS wanted it that's when Elijah left to go find another weapon. it was Elijah more than the Mohave BoS as a whole that was weapon obsessed. And in Dead Money we get to see why. He's not just driven to collect them but use them. Even as Extreme as the BoS can be Elijah was still an extremist in comparison and that made him highly dangerous.
      The NCR are happy just getting power out of it and not even knowing that the weapon part of it exists. Granted if they are in control of it I'm sure somebody smart enough to figure it out would come along eventually.

      Because the NCR is not the altruistic group it pretends to be.
      I forget who says it, but someone said, "the NCR will simply create a situation where they can justify their occupation and control of the area's resources." This is a reference to the US selling Sadam the materials to make biological and chemical weapons, then invading him for those same components, as well as fabricating false flag attacks in order to justify military action.
      Also we see the NCR makes treaties and then breaks them when it finds this convenient. The Khan's agreed to forgive the NCR for their past genocide and fight alongside them. The NCR responded by taking over the Khan's territory and demanding the Khan's leave. This is a reference to how the US treats American Indians.
      The NCR slaughters men, women, children, alike, once they've decided a group is dangerous. They did this to the Khans, the Kings, the Brotherhood, and probably many more. This is a reference to many things, including Waco, Agent Orange, Project Phoenix, Firebombing Tokyo, Napalming Dresden, and nuking Hiroshima. In all instances the US military targeted civilians in order to achieve their purposes.
      They also negotiate for peace, then attack when the other side drops their guard. We get to see this with the Khans who surrendered to the NCR, and the NCR decided that was the best time to kill them. This is probably a reference to many situations in many wars where surrendered enemies were found slaughtered and no investigation was done to find out who was responsible, as the military doesn't want to implicate their own troops.
      Someone else says in game, "the NCR legalizes in the Senate whatever act of aggression they want to do." This is self explanatory.
      I remember all of these because they were all based off of common criticisms of US foreign policy. US based gamers don't see a problem with the NCR, even though they're clearly the dangerous, greedy, corrupt, imperialistic war mongers, because US gamers think those things are okay.
      The game was practically designed to challenged the gamer to start thinking about their own culture more critically, but unfortunately there's no achievement for that, so few bother.

    ethical i could do any of the three,
    Fremont and Westside, NCR DOES have the Dam so giving power to those two poor settlements would be the most efficient use of it for improving the Mojave on the whole.
    McCarran and Las Vegas Strip, NCR are the ones protecting, maintaining, and funding the plant as such they do have ownership of the power, everything else is leeching off of them
    Full region, the humanitarian option, everyone gets a little bit of the power and all suffers the frequent brownouts as a result. the morally good option but not really a "good" option.

    I love how the terminal on the mainframe refers to Freeside as Fremont & Westside, it’s a nice little thing to show it’s pre-war. I wish that was done more in this game as its a bit of a puzzle to remember Fremont is probably Freeside, and it always breaks my immersion a bit when I find something pre-war that keeps caps in a safe when they were useless, or refers to something by its post-war name. I always pick that option since the full region said it was likely to cause brownouts, I didn’t want to cause the power to be mostly useless by having it cutting off all the time, and Freeside is the second best option.

    Euclid's c-finder can guide the energy given by the Helios station as microwave radiation released from Archimedes 2. They mention coverting it into a "usable form" (assumable a space lazer) Are there any places that could utilize such an energy output in the Mojave? Because it made me think this was a mobile energy delivery system. I rembered doing this quest for the space lazer as a kid cuz that was cool but never really understood completely what was going on. But was there a deeper reason they put this into the game? Can it be used to power something undiscovered? Or discovered but never fully understood or tested upon with the Archimedes 2. What if Archimedes and Euclids c-finder is more than just a weapon?

      James Legrand Both are good in their rights. New Vegas feels more fleshed out, has great mods, good DLC and runs better than Fallout 3. Fallout 3 is good in it's own rights, the story isn't the best, but some if the characters are good, the DLC is also pretty good, some of the mechanics in the game were improved upon in NV, and it is a little difficult to get running at times (even without mods). Honestly play both, they're both good, but NV is just a teeny bit better (vanilla) and only gets better with mods. Sorry for dragging on with my comment, I rewrote it twice.

      Dashing hey thanks for sharing your opinion.

    • @SecondSince
      @SecondSince Před 7 lety +8

      Well Dashing touched on some things and that's pretty accurate. For me what makes NV better is that it is a lot more in line with what Fallout 1 and 2 were like. For lack of a better word, NV 'feels' more like the natural progression from 1 and 2. Also, as noted in my original comment, in my opinion NV is more free or neutral in what it let's you decide. More than "choose to side with good guys or bad guys" it let's you try to live in morally grey areas more than F3 did. At least in my memory. Then there's also mechanics. F3 suffered a bit from being the first Fallout game in a 1st/3rd person perspective. They had to figure things out, where as NV had that base already and could build on it. Lastly in my opinion NV had a better implementation of skills. I could go on and on ( i love the franchise!) but that'll do i think. :) Last point. I'm in no way saying that F3 is/was a bad game. It was just flawed in some ways that for me detract from it being an all-time classic like NV and F2 is for me.

    • @SecondSince
      @SecondSince Před 7 lety +3

      Actually, just coming back to it for a moment. I think the parallel between F1 and F2 to F3 and NV is absolutely there for me. F1 layed a great foundation, but it being something new it was rough and 'flawed diamond' if you will. Then F2 came along and tightened it up, added some needed things, removed useless clutter, etc. The same can be said about F3 and NV. Again, just my thoughts and observations. All are worth playing though. Even Fallout Tactics. ;)

    so, just looked it up for the real nerns amoung us; the guns name is a reference to Euclidean geometry and 'c=distance'. basically, e.g. is the idea of using a central point around a sphere,(a satellite (Archimedes II) orbiting earth.) basically central terrestrial point shoots a beam to a refracting poing in space, that is then beamed to the laser designated point. it's supposed to be able to hit half the globe. even fixed, the range finder itself is still in test phase, hence the line of sight limitations. 2 more satellites at legrange points, and you could rain sunfire on the entire globe, from anywhere. also a popular sci-fi way to transfer power. collect the power at a designated point, shoot it to a satalite that distributes to power relays on the ground.

      Lord Ahab out of 3/new Vegas/4 the mojave chapter is my favorite. It actually feels like a family and even though I don't love their goals everyone has personality and is unique. They even have a few teenagers being teenagers. I don't recall finding those anywhere else in the game.

    If you choose to direct power to someplace, Thomas Hildern will react to it. He'll refer you as a crusader if you direct power to Freeside and Westside, and is OK if you direct power to the Strip & McCarran, or to the whole area. He'll be disappointed if ARCHIMEDES II received the power directories.

    Gotta say I was a little late getting on the Fallout bandwagon, only bought NV last year and just couldn't stop playing it. I was enjoying taking my sweet ass time exploring the game and it was blowing my mind how huge and detailed it is, how complex the characters are and how their stories intertwine with each other. I never completed the story so there's a lot I have yet to discover but I could watch these videos for days. It has to be hands down one of the best games of all time. The music is poignant, the story is immersive, the settings and textures are all so damn good. Bethesda games always appeal to me because of the element of choice, your actions impact the outcome of the game and you develop relationships with the NPCs that can affect your success. Bethesda don't spoon-feed you one task after another, either. Can't stand it when games set you a task and then pretty much tutorial you with it the entire time, there was a lot of that in games like GTA V- go here, do this, do that. The total lack of pressure to pursue the storyline and to explore it at your own pace is what I like most. I've got so many open quests just from exploring, talking to characters and absorbing the story of the wasteland.

    Hey Ox. Awesome videos. Around 8:00 when you are commenting on the goofiness of the notices from Poseidon Energy too their employees keep quiet it reminded me of many of the old WW2 OPSEC videos I've seen from the military. If you want a great example there is a cartoon from Private Snafu called Spies which illustrates the way the military was thinking at the time.

    That "machine shop" was probably an auxiliary power production area. Those large semicircle machines are turbines, meaning they probably had a secondary nuclear reactor. Nuclear power is little more than steam power using radioactive materials as a heat source rather than burning coal.

    I always direct the power from Helios One to EVERYBODY. You also forgot to mention the dialogue options and Intelligence check you get if you have Arcade Gannon in your party. I only activated Archimedes I once with Arcade in my party to see the look on his face; I reloaded from an earlier autosave and just sent the power to the whole region and played the rest of the way from there. Only in my last, finished character (i.e., having done the main quest) did I activate Archimedes II and used Euclid's C-Finder ONCE just to see what it did. Having a 24-hour cooldown period before you can use it again doesn't make it very practical, and you can't use it indoors, so why bother with it?

    The only playthrough of New Vegas where I powered up Archimedes was my Legion character, which was only to kill the NCR troops at Helios One so the Legion could take over the plant. My other playthroughs I sent the power to the Regional Grid option which stops anyone from gaining the weapon.
