The perfect day in Flores, Azores

- Today join me for day two of my Azores adventure, this time roaming around the unspeakably beautiful island of Flores. I'll show you the westernmost village in Europe, Faja Grande, have a delicious octopus lunch, go hiking to find an incredible waterfall that wouldn't be out of place in Hawaii, and then go swimming in a volcanic rock pool near the airport before flying out. All in all, I think this might be the perfect day in Flores, and it's completely doable to go there for a day-trip from Ponta Delgada. I'll also share some Azorean trivia with you. Did you know there are people on Flores with strong Boston accents?
How I got there:
This was part of a ~$1000 business class ticket routing Stockholm-Lisbon-Ponta Delgada-Flores-Terceira-New York JFK booked directly through Azores Airlines.

What part of Flores? My dad is from Santa Cruz and my mom is from Ponta Delgada.
I haven't been to Flores in 29 years.
Flores has real 'Garden of Eden' vibes. It looks exquisite, but so very far away from where I live (Southeastern Australia).
Funny you should mention that in fact because Flores is actually the antipode (the furthest point away on the planet, directly on the opposite side of the globe) to Adelaide. So pretty much as far as you could go! Good thing you have lots of incredible beauty closer to home so you don't really need to!

Reminds me a lot of Hawaii! My great grandparents are from Sao Miguel and Madera. I hope to go to visit soon. Many Azoreans immigrated here to Hawaii in the 1800s to work the sugar plantations.
Yeah some definitely similarities! Was it the Azoreans who brought malasadas to Hawaii?

Wrong direction?
I live in upstate NewYork and have been to Hawaii 35 times. On the return trip it takes 24 hours of being awake, if one doesn't sleep on the flights. It is, of course, gorgeous but this excellent video reminds me of a smaller Hawaii. I should look into this - at half the distance in the opposite direction!

Yep it’s definitely more convenient from New York! Plus way less tourists around. That said, I still prefer Hawaii if all else is equal!
Amazing video as always Gabe. The island looked amazing and I definitely have to get to the Azores one day. Though, from what I remember from your flight videos getting there you weren't a big fan of SATA. Maybe I'll have to get there some other way. 😅
If you’re coming from the US I might try United! You’ll be stuck with SATA for the inter-island flights but that’s not so bad, they’re short; bring your own snacks though there is zero service and you’ll be lucky if you get a hello 😁

What a lovely place
Thank you Gabe for the awesome videos and allowing us to ride along with you on your worldwide journeys. I retired from the airline industry in 2020 after almost 44 years of a job that I loved; and of course all the travel that came with it. By far my favorite place on the planet is Greece. I haven't been to the Azores, but after watching your videos it's definitely on my bucket list. ✈️

You might find some entertainment on São Miguel but everywhere in the Azores is very sleepy. It’s all about slow pace of life and being close to nature
