Tyler said in an Apple Music interview “I come from a basketball background, and choking is: You’re standing at the free-throw line and you need to make one of those two, and if you miss them both, you choked. I think for me, with certain friendships and relationships, there were moments that I could have risen to the occasion and I didn't, and that's something that I'll have to live with. I think that everyone has those moments where they feel like they choked. The song is trying to work that through and trying to figure out if that’s someone that I was born to be. Can I shape this? Is this something I can turn around?”
I think this song is about not being able to ask for help when you need it, and "choking" on your words. You find self "worth" in how much you are "able to withstand" without showing weakness. But if you "don't bother anyone" with your problems, then "nobody's coming for you" when you need help because they don't know you're struggling.
Relying on yourself alone to fix your problems can be comforting because it "hurts a little less" than showing vulnerability, and you have control. You can take a splinter out, or even "push it further in" if you want (This could be a metaphor for how tempting negative self-talk can be. Like if you're alone thinking about your problems you can enter a comfortingly self-destructive and negative thought spiral. Your "self-sabotage" can feel "sweet", like a "romance".)
I think the last part is a metaphor for how, like your shadow growing larger as the sun moves behind you, you gain strength and wisdom over time as a result of facing and overcoming your struggles.

My husband and I are 61. Well...my husband died May 3. He fell while walking our much loved Charlie-Dog. He had a massive brain bleed and was brain dead within hours. We danced, sang, just need up and down together in the kitchen after dinner dishes were done. We played Twenty One Pilots at 9-10:00 pm while walking Charlie for his last night walkie... Tyler and Josh have been an integral part of our lives. Never did a day go by without us listening to these incredibly talented artists. My husband's memorial is scheduled for July 30, our wedding anniversary. I will wear my wedding gown, and the person handling sound is instructed to play at least 4 of Tyler and Josh's most beloved sings...Elvis's Only Fools Rush In, ukelele style; Redecorate; Addict with a pen, (I write a lot); Trees; Shy Away...there are so many... everything they have done, continue to do fills me up...I love them. My husband did too.

I have a feeling that in the whole "scaled and icy" era josh wasn't really josh? I don't know if it was something done by dema or simply some sort of "imaginery friend" to comfort tyler/clancy when he was trapped by dema. Like there are points (such as "Saturday" and "The Outside" where josh really was josh but at other times... he seems to be sorta helping out dema. Maybe its an act he put up so that they wouldn't rat him out, maybe dema/nico still doesnt know that josh is the torchbearer so he keeps up the act?

Eh, im not sure about that. The songs lyrics are "self sabotage is a sweet romance" and "sometimes i feel my worth is what im able to withstand" i feel like covid (as well as other things) has really put tyler down, although i can't really blame him bc that's what it's like for everyone right now. Although, i can imagine that when he eventually is able to play songs on tour again, he'll be happier than ever, coz thats how it seemed when trench came out. So i think he'll eventually be fine :)

3 years ago today this is the song that really got me into twenty one pilots
Listened to this everyday when i was doing remote learning for school. It made me cry sometimes cuz i was so upset and slightly depressed that i wasn't with my friends and classmates and zoom was just awful for me. Now in 6th grade im back in school and i am feeling sad all over again hearing this. Its nostalgic already.

I have been reading through Job, and when I came across Job 41, this video came straight to mind.
Job 41is where God is responding to Job to get him to understand who he is in comparison to God himself. God is speaking of how only He can control the sea monster (aka Leviathan), and in verse 6, God specifically asks if merchants could possibly buy the Leviathan and sell it in their shops.
After making the connection with trash the dragon on display at Big Fun, I started to think about the whole book of Job in comparison to Tyler’s character in the Choker music video. What I came up with is just like Tyler - Job didn’t bother anyone; he took in other people’s toxicity (Job’s three friend’s advice and his wife’s criticism/ Tyler only smoking secondhand); Job knows that only God knows what he is made of (Tyler - cut us open spread us out, dry us in the sand, lay the fibers side by side and you’ll begin to understand); Job knows that pain is a middleman to God; Job fears God and he is the only one that can make that choice for himself (Tyler-I see no volunteers to cosign on my fears); Job felt great pain that no one else felt, and his friends only made it worse (Tyler- the splinter hurts worse when someone else tries to carve it out); Job’s pain brought him closer to God, the light (Tyler-when you’re in pain, you barely see the dark, but the sun or the light, is blinding when it is behind you in the rearview).
I don’t know, I thought the connection here was really cool, and I cannot believe I am just now seeing it.
As far as the Choker connection goes, Job choked when he cursed the day he was born in Chapter 3, and then for spending too much time listening to his friends’ thoughts and opinions behind his suffering instead of focusing on God. Ultimately Job was blessed in the end with more than he had before everything was taken away from him. Tyler’s character hasn’t gotten to that point yet.
