Dixit Crosby : “Fagen just sent the words and stood back to see what would happen. He knew what our taste was and he knew what we would probably try to do. He’s an extremely intelligent guy and I think he knew what would happen. We know his playbook pretty well, so we deliberately went there - complex chords, complex melodies. WE STEELY DANNED HIM right into the middle of this as far as we could❕ And fortunately Donald liked it […].”

I quite like the song.
Jesus, if there were one guy whose voice should've failed him 30 years ago...but goddamn if he ain't still bringing A-game level shit to his recordings. Dave this is smooth, tough, and sexy all at once. Colour me more than impressed.

The date is January 20, 2023. Yesterday, we learned of the passing of this insanely talented man whom we all loved. I was unaware of the existence of this album that DC and DF, et al, had collaborated on!!! It's phenomenal and I intend to share it with others. Under the current circumstance, I find it comforting. RIP DAVID CROSBY

It's immensely comforting at least for me.. He never ran out of ideas and musically was still intensely alive to the last.

FYI: Fagen’s involvement is “limited” to providing the lyrics. Crosby and Raymond (Crosby’s son) wrote the music, Raymond arranged it.

I have to say as a massive steely and Donald fan who grew up with this thanks to my dad, this is on another level. One of the best songs iv heard in a long time but what would have made it completely perfect is if fagen was singing backing vocals on this. It's blown me away!!!!!

Freaking awesome! Crosby's voice is incredible! He is singing Donald Fagen's lyrics - Fagen gave him the lyrics specifically to write a tune to them - it was Crosby's son James Raymond who wrote the music - and he captured that Steely Dan / Donald Fagen vibe perfectly, this is truly an incredible sounding song! Crosby should do an album of songs with Fagen lyrics - or better yet, with his son James and with Fagen, now that would be quite the groundbreaking project! Why isn't this song a #1 hit?

Crosby has often "accused" his son for being Steely Dan incarnate, and boy does it show here and on "She Gotta Be Somewhere" off Sky Trails....nice set of skills to be born with, Son of Crosby and Inherent of all things Steely Dan....
@shane hunter of course, but I've done my homework.... been following James Raymond since CPR, yes, he's got Fagen's chops + and then some...got all kinds of references to share, but I not here to make it easy on you...I'd simply say go watch the jaw dropping version of Deja Vu arranged by none other than Raymond and his pop czcams.com/video/nC2rgq8TXbQ/video.html&ab_channel=JeffPevar and you get a sense of that SD Jazz, Blues, R&B vocabulary few have.. ..... even Morrison by CPR, the first song they released as some kind of single was an awakening
As I mentioned in another thread, Crosby didn’t just wake up one day singing/writing jazzier progressions. I love his son too, but take a listen to some of the vocal arrangements in this 1970 solo, pre dating steely Dan. This guy has it in him, he just really never developed it until he started CPR... Seems to me a pretty natural progression. The whole album is pretty amazing musically in that way. I discovered it many years ago and it kind of blew my mind.
