    I think it’s a bit of an unfair comparison with the different tone knob settings

    I always wonder why producers choose pbass more often than J. I belive it is because the "bass profile" from a P is less jumpy due to the offset neck pickup. Thats why I play a pj, cause you get the nice brightness from the bridge J, with the added bass stability from the P.

      Yeah that bridge pickup is essential for ANYTHING jaco right!?

    • @exitse7en
      @exitse7en Před rokem

      One of the primary reasons is that j basses typically have single coil pickups and p basses have split coil. This makes j basses have a bunch of hum between notes, whereas o basses are relatively silent.
      Other than that, if the pickups are in a similar location they can sound extremely similar. Oh, one is usually a few millimeters wider on the neck than the other as well, but I can't remember which at the moment.

      @@frankorobinson1540 the other thing is there was DISTORTION on the p bass which is truly indicative of the unfair fight. Why is it muffled AND distorted??? I mean we all know the P Bass has less variety of sounds than a Jazz bass for one due to having one less pickup. But in my opinion, its a sweeter fuller tone than either of the jazz tones, not by a lot but a pinch.. but it is certainly clean and not dull. I can understand if you think the jazz is the better tone. I probably would never make a bassist play a P bass over a Jazz bass on a recording even on a song that I wrote... but man oh man, if doing a comparison of two of anything, you can be sure youre gonna get a fair comparison from me or I wont even do it.

      @@HickiesMusicStore Im just basing this on around 100 new and used squire p basses sounding much cleaner, brighter, fuller and the americans dont sound worse... nor do the Mexican Fenders. Just nit sure why I hear that bit of crunch wven though the treble is squashed. 2 ways to get crunch, a super hot signal naturally over driving some stage of the amp or input chain to the recirding device, or a pedal... but if there is enough gain to distort then the treble should be overwhelming and not smashed. I record and do live aound and how I set my EQ in a recording is by looping just a few seconds of audio so. I will maybe touch it but the fact that its just one minute to me.. I mean what I am establishing is that I know how fenders sound plugged direct and into ampeg, galeon kruger, hartke, mesa, sunn, you name it.. the difference between a jazz and a p bass is what I know in my head, its a close ratio. And I can hear active vs passive on a jazz in my sleep. Or if live at a show if somehow during transporting my ton knob were turned, I would have that knob fixed DURING the very first note I played, would not take me 60 seconds to figure out. All that said, amd I will say that there are some songs that call for a Jazz bass and not a P bass and you really should have both at your disposal. Not even gping to talk about active vs passive on the jazz.

    Oh I’m definitely a Precision Bass guy! Got a jazz and for me it’s simple if Im not going to use both volume knobs at maximum why bother? Noting is more simple then a Precision One volume One tone Voila!!

    You can thump with a j bass but you can’t honk with a p bass.

    I just got my first jazz bass (I used to borrow what I assume is a p.bass from my school) and I’ve also noticed it’s a whole lot heavier. Maybe that’s just me-

      Interesting! probably depends on the body's wood. :) is it alder, or ash?

    • @WilDBeestMF
      @WilDBeestMF Před rokem

      It's not an illusion. Jazz basses tend to have a broader, albeit sleeker and more contoured body which belies that they're a bit heavier.

      Great observation! I think we were meant to be showing potential difference in style of playing moreso than tone, but its definately worth pointing out! Cheers. - Sam
