  • As much as it looks like this was recorded using a low end potato I promise it wasn't.
Just a simple fix to the common problem with this DV notebook series.
NOTE: About a week after this fix I opened up the laptop and added a copper shim to the GPU where the crappy heat pad was. After that, the laptop had much better heat flow and never overheated again. It was an easy process. So in the end it turns out these are great laptops with one little crappy design flaw that caused 1,000s to fail. I bought the copper shim off ebay here is the link:

It worked! The machine is a HP dv6636. Used a heat gun @ 300 watt setting for 60 seconds and also used a small knife to press down on the chip. I will take apart and shim with copper to complete. Thanks for vid post!

    Holy crap!
This just worked for on my dv6000!
    Things to bear in mind;
    1) didn't work for me first time so tried again for 120 seconds and worked
    2) plastic housing got very hot and deformed so try to remould back into shape while soft
    3) make sure the hairdryer is angled / pointed at right area. I used a folded news paper to channel hit area onto right area
    4) let laptop cool before reassembling and switching on
    5) don't let your girlfriend catch you using her hairdryer as you will have some awkward explaining to do
    CANT BELIEVE THIS WORKED :)

I have a HP dv6000, and the other day it couldn't turn on because the screen went black!
I searched all over the internet an i finally came to this video.
But i did a few additional things, i knew that i had to over heat the chip but i didn't know where it was located so this video was just awesome.
But after that i turned on my pc, the screen was still black, but then i pressed the on button as i pressed alt + ctrl + del and suddenly the screen was back again! :D

My screen would come on, but after the line in the corner blinked, it restarted and restarted... Decided to try this (had nothing to loose)
BOO FRIGGIN' YEAH!!!!!!!!! The screen works! It starts all the way up! Shut it down all the way and powered it back again to make sure it wasn't a fluke!!!!!
    BE CAREFUL!!!
I was a bit careless and Some plastic around the panel opening got misshapen so the Ram panel won't shut all the way. In return, some plastic near the battery compartment got misshapen, so after I put the battery in, it is now jammed :(

15 minutes using hair dryer? Hmm, you should start try with 1.5 minutes and test it out before heat it longer. I have successfully made my GPUs work again, HD5770 and GTX650.

The graphics driver is soldered to the motherboard? That's a new one on me! But, your solution is pretty silly because to effect a permanent repair in any case requires opening up of the body to allow access to the GPU on the motherboard. Otherwise, all you're doing is prolonging the issue and risking more damage by overheating exposed plastic parts.
