Naples Yellow: an underrated watercolor that I can't live without. Comparison and review.

I’m Elisabetta, an Italian watercolor artist with a passion and a curiosity for art supplies and pigments.
Today we are swatching and comparing a few different brands of Naples Yellow: Winsor & Newton, Maimeri Blu, Sennelier, Rembrandt, Roman Szmal, QOR, Daniel Smith, Renesans, Rosa Gallery, Old Holland, Turner.
Naples Yellow is a soft, buttery earthy yellow that can be used for botanical, flowers, portraits, but my favourite usage is for the sky...
I will also try a simple sketch!

Thanks for this lovely video, Elisabetta. 😁 I definitely like the Sennelier and Rembrandt colors a lot. M. Graham and Lukas also have a PBr24-based Naples Yellow. The Old Holland Naples Yellow Extra is especially intriguing since their paints are generally pretty expensive and it is my understanding that this is because the paints are more highly pigmented. So I'm delighted at how soft and subtle their Naples Yellow Extra is, without being at all weak. As you may know, they also have Naples Yellow Reddish Extra and a PBr24-based Naples Yellow Extra Deep, which I bet is spectacular. Those Dutchies know how to make some paint! That company has been around since about 1664 I think, though their watercolor line is a quite recent addition.

Daniel Smith has now a new color containing the real Naples Yellow Pigment, PBr24 and its name is Chrome Titanate yellow. 😊

And also love Italy and all the paints there from AGallo to Maimeri Venezia, to Maimeri Superior to the New Maimeri Blu single pigments. Would love to try Nila Colori and Ferrario Tintoreto too. 😊

naples yellow really is a fantastic colour, i'm surprised these swatches have so much variation as I have a Jacksons art and Mijello one and they are virtually the same ❤❤

lovely set of earthy yellows. I fell in love with Naples Yellow Deep from Sennelier. Was disappointed with the hue of Qor's Naples Yellow and actually removed it from my Qor palette (got it in an Earth set) and replaced it with actual Yellow Ochre. Beautiful beach scene painting. Schmincke's PBr24 is labeled Titanium Gold Ochre and is very pretty and Roman Szmal's Naples Yellow Deep is great too; i recommend it!

Hi Elisabetta! Excellent video as usual. What stuns me is the sheer level of difference across the brands. I agree with you, re Sennelier and Rembrandt. Both of which I own, along with several others, like yourself. Your painting truly showed it’s beauty within the sky, and gave me much food for thought.

When you swatched out the regular version of W&N Naples Yellow (PW6, PBr24), it was like a symphony hitting just the right note.

Lovely painting! A few months ago I was in the market for Naples yellow. There is such a variety from single pigment to multi pigment. I did not want multi pigment Naples yellow or one with white. In the end I purchased Sennelier Naples yellow deep and I’m happy with it. Thanks for sharing. ❤

I only just got the Michael Harding version of Naples Yellow. Haven't painted with it much yet but it's a lovely colour.

My all time favorite Naples Yellow is the one by Schmincke Horadam. I haven’t found one that can compare 🤗

This was so informative and interesting to watch.. I love Naples Yellow, and I use it often in my paintings, although I use acrylics.. and I use the Camel or Camlin brand that I get in India.. It's wonderful to learn about colors.. I've subbed & Lk101☺

Could you please explain the codes for these colors(PBr24...)? Is there a chart to explain them further or a video?

Codes are very simple, P stands for Pigment, Br stands for Brown, and 24 is the specific pigment. PB are blues, PY are Yellows, PR are reds, PG are greens and so on... For Instance PB29 is Ultramarine Blue, PB15 is Phtalo Blue etc.
You can find an exhaustive list of all pigments on www.Handprint.com. Thanks for asking, actually it is a very important question!
Oh, I just found that you have a video on Naples Yellow, too! As I wrote in the other video, I use the White Nights NY light (PY216). I think it is actually called "Turner's yellow" PBr24 is lovely, too! I love the Maimeri version, but it's basically impossible to get here.

It may just be the camera, but the Rosa galleria pan of Naples yellow looks like it may have a piece of release paper stuck in it Maybe? its hard to tell. This is my FAVORITE yellow by the way. I use Maimeri Blu version and it is the only yellow in my travel pallete. This pigment, Pbr24 and red brown Pbr25 are my favorite earth pigments. Thank you for the video

The MaimeriBlu and Sennelier PBr24 are bright, compared to W&N.
