Years ago when the Moodies were playing in Vegas, Mike was in town to meet with fans. It was at a Best Buy store and there was a fairly long line of people. But here's what really impressed me about Mike...he didn't just say hi, sign his autograph and call over the next person in line. Instead, he had you sit down with him at his table so that he could chat with you. He spent a good five minutes or more with every single person. What a good guy!!!

He got angry and said something stupid and hurtful in the heat of the moment. How many of us can honestly say we've never been in the same position? I certainly can't. All you can do is own up to it and try to make amends.

Mike is such a man to say this publically. He is sorry, and apologizing. I am sure it deeply hurt Graeme, a very emotional man. At the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction, 2018, you can see Mike lovingly placing his arm on Graeme’s shoulder and speaking to him softly. All of us have said hurtful things to and about people. As we age, every bad thing we did in our life haunts us, and we ask and pray for forgiveness with a penitent heart.

Those are extremely GREAT WORDS of heartfelt retrospect Thomas. I too saw them all receive their awards at The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame a few years back. Heck, even good Denny was there! (Original bassist Clint had already passed away a decade or so ago.) But indeed other than Den, who really only contributed to album #1, it was GRAEME & MICHAEL who were standing side by side near the podium, looking both extremely proud & at the same time, very humbled to be inducted. From what I can see there was no silly old "Line Drawn In The Sand" between the two anymore. Somehow, as I have proof of it, Graeme doesn't seem like a fellow to hold life long grudges; both seemed quite happy to be there. Now, on the same hand, I can understand him not having two stage hands, roll out a good ol' fashion Mellotron to play "NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN" with the rest of the band. Mike knew they had now a very accomplished keyboardist, with plenty of tour, studio & rehearsal hours banked up to do a fine showing. Just like Steve Perry reluctantly declined to sing lead on just AT LEAST ONE SONG when Journey was inducted; Steve knew in his heart that the job NOW belonged to Ariel. He respected that, as I am sure Mike did also. Mike just couldn't walk on stage and crank out "NIGHTS..." with the rest of the guys, without scheduled, proper rehearsal & warm up time. The decision was made and Mike, the gentleman that he was, honored that.
That last line of this interview really made me think! (Not the reciting of "LATE LAMENT"...) but the part regarding the "Ex-Spouse Scenario". That puts all human psychology (and rock band drama) into proper perspective, I would have to concur.

I must admit that after Mike Pinder left the Moodies something, some essence, was lost. He was so much more than the keyboard player who wrote a few songs. Yes, Justin Haywood still wrote some lovely songs but overall I felt they became very bland.
Changing times didnt help either. I agree with Mike that with Octave the feeling wasnt there any more.
I remember being very excited at the band reforming and getting Octave and feeling very underwhemed. However, we still have that period from 67 to 72 when they released some fantastic albums for which I am very grateful to all five of them.

Michael, you are sorely missed, I understand, you needed to find a good woman and raise a family...sometimes I think the fans "think that they own the artist and expect them to be their hit factory". Mike Pinder! What a musician and what a pioneer! He truly was the ethereal soul of the Moodies. It's inevitable in a band situation something like Mike describes can happen. There are a few musicians who get so far in their head that they can forget that a drummer can be a musician, too. I've played drums for 51 years and can attest to these things happening. But it's usually something everyone gets over - I have never held a grudge. I have loved the Moodies since 1967 and it was a blow when he left. Moraz was a great keyboardist but he never captured the Core Seven heart and soul. You can hear the difference after Octave...the Moodies post-Octave music was awesome but never quite matched the Pinder age. From Days to Octave were the most profound.

@arturbello4213 Well, hmmm...as I scratch my balding head (or rather, scratch Mike's FULLY balded head...HA!), honestly, I really feel now...Mike, knowing that his good ol' much loved band mates Ray & Graeme have sadly departed & will be forever sorely missed and ALL THE SILLY & STUPID PRESSURES of being "Rock Stars" is completely no longer, even remotely, any of the surviving members modus operandi, I honestly feel Mike might be quite open to doing ONE LAST FINAL ALBUM of some great, long overdue creative work between the three of them...but, unfortunately, I truly sense, the fire in Justin & John to have Mike back to work again with him...for a myriad of different reasons...is just fully gone now. NOT so much sore or hard feelings, but some 45, going on 50 years since they all convened to record "OCTAVE"...I really feel the two are just not interested. Sad though; I honestly feel the lasting trio...could make some extraordinarily sounding, incredible material....as one last Final Bow, as "THE MOODY BLUES".

Did you see Val Kilmer play the role of Jim Morrison in the movie, "The Doors?" Wow...what a "drunken pissing contest that would be!" Jim WOULD NEVER FORGIVE OR FORGET...HE WOULD PROBABLY DO SOMETHING STUPID AND FACE A LENGTHY JAIL SENTENCE! By the way, I saw an interview with Ray Manzerek, the legendary keyboardist and he was quite angry about the movie, as he stated he wanted to "punch Oliver Stone in the nose, because he portrayed Jim Morrison a a "drunken buffoon" that was that way 24/7. He stated that there was another sensitive soul inside of Jim that we as an audience never knew. I guess I won't know until I "Break on Through to the Other Side" when it is my time. Then I will ask God if I can meet Mr.Mojo Risin'. Please wish me luck, as I feel that I am gonna need it, BIG TIME!!!

This appears to be an outtake from that 2 hour documentary on the MB. Some interesting interviews in there...notably, how pissed off Graeme still is when Mike changed his mind and refused to go on tour with Octave. You can tell Graeme has some deep feelings about Mike telling Ray he would go on the road - and then called Justin later and said no, he wasn't going. Mike made it very clear in the interview that during the Octave sessions the feeling just wasn't there anymore, the sessions were difficult, and Mike hated the road...didn't want to be on tour longer than 11 days. You could tell even Justin was a bit upset, but you can't blame anybody here. It is what it is. That said, R&R Hall of Fame should honor these guys while they are all still alive. Then we'll see a reunion - at least for one night. What F'in joke R&R Hall of Fame is.

I agree with your assessment. This juvenile grudge between Pinder and Edge can't be the whole, or even most, of the reason Pinder left. I gather Edge is one of those types of delusional band members, who, confronted with their lack of skill/talent relative to the others, resort to other ways of grabbing power...such as band politics. Pinder probably felt outnumbered and decided for himself it wasn't worth it at first. I'm sure he regretted it later, but at least it was his choice.

Honesty hurts. Edge is the most non-essential member of the band. And if it hadn't been for Pinder and his knowledge of the mellotron, the band would have been finished before Hayward and Lodge ever arrived.

I disagree. If you listen to the drumming on those albums, you'll understand why musicologists refer to Graeme as 'master drummer'. His contributions to the band are as essential as anyone else's.

Sorry, but he accomplished amazing things not because of Graeme. Look him up. Pinder was a pioneer in the use of several musical methods and even influenced the Beatles, by sharing one method with his friend John Lennon, an instrument Paul McCartney later praised and demonstrated as well. Graeme Edge had some excellent poetry and was an excellent drummer and an integral part of the team, but to say that Pinder's talent was a reflection of Graeme is simply misinformed and prejudiced. In fact, many fans still love ONLY the early years for the psychedelic sound produced by Pinder's musical arrangement (he was the official arranger of the band) which was never recovered after he left. One of Pinder's sons followed in his footsteps to arrange music successfully in several movies. I love them all, and see value in the band's work both before and after Pinder. I refuse to play favorites, or hate on any of them just because one of them left the band.

Mike Its just one of those things,it happens to anyone whether you are a creative person or not, interrupting the flow can be really annoying..its being human, a train of thought can be lost, but one can learn from these things,it looks like you have.
Life experiences are a matter of Spiritual evolution,we are like a rough diamond that has to be cut and polished before its beauty can be appreciated, and its a painful process, the mind has to tamed by the Spirit that you really are...... the mind is just a bundle of thoughts, that produces an Ego,a person, but its just an idea.
Thanks for the wonderful Mellotron playing and beautiful compositions ,I fell in love with that Ethereal sound and lyrics of the MB's immediately in 1969 that triggered something deep inside
We are all on a Threshold OF the dream, a life story of "me" that doesn't even exist..and the MB's music was the catalyst for "me"to realise this.

That's not to suggest it was any individuals fault , but indeed inevitable given the stagnated world we live (Or lack of spirituality) and it's materially motivated framework. I well know what it is to be "One" with a number of others and to see it end. Sad as it is, the world has not chosen any other path but the one it so clings to. Broad and spacious as it is. *sighs*

I wholeheartedly agree...Graeme Edge's only accomplishment was that he was the first drummer to develop the electronic drum kit with a set of complicated set of relays...he stated that years ago. On a scale of the top 100 drummers in the world, I would rate him at 99, and Ringo Starr at 100! No skill set, even with the two combined!😂😂😂😂

    • @whatevershebrings
      @whatevershebrings Před 3 lety +1

Graeme Edge is in the same class (and school) of Rock drummer as Ringo Starr, Nick Mason, and John Densmore, in three other 60's megabands who had serviceable but incredibly mediocre drummers. All were clearly the weak link in their respective groups.
It sounds like Edge felt he was denied a level of respect that only he felt he deserved, but was neither warranted nor earned for a player of his very limited ability. Justin and John defended him and closed ranks around Pinder, who was the real victim here.
I'm a drummer and have played in numerous bands. There's hardly ever any deference shown to a drummer, and especially if they're not as talented as the principal players.
Graeme Edge: you're a grown man, not a child. Grow up and get over it. This is a classic mountain made out of a molehill.
