You can see and hear Jan's disappointment when he talks about med school 😭 I think it took a lot of courage for him to get up there. I enjoy seeing him so if they had to lip sync sometimes it's ok with me. Much respect to him and to Dean for being by his side all those years.

Couldn't sing exactly like the record and the sound effects too.. why you can tell not live. Like they showed in the movie they made where tape stops..
I was at that concert, which was held at the Hollywood Palladium in 1973. The tape did NOT stop, as portrayed in the movie. What it did was that the speed slowed down, sped back up, slowed again… like that. The people started booing them, that I remember. However, unlike the movie, Mike Love was NOT there. And it wasn’t that they were trying to fool the audience, either. I was told, by Jim Rush (he’s the bass player with Papa Doo Run Run and is in this video, standing next to the keyboard player, Don Zirilli. Jim told me that Jan was quite a trickster and loved playing practical jokes. This was one of those jokes. It was all planned. They wanted to play a trick on the audience. Probably didn’t go as well as they planned, but it was not that he couldn’t sing at all and needed to fake it on tape. It was just a joke.
Never ceases to amaze me what passes for "live". Not only is this vocal lip-sync...that's the original music track, cut by the "Wrecking Crew" of studio musicians.
Jan & Dean always performed entirely LIVE with a full live band when they toured and did their concerts around the country. However, for most TV appearances they did over the years (before and after Jan's accident) they would usually lip-sync to the original records. This was probably done for promotional reasons so that fans could easily recognize their big hits and would remember who Jan & Dean were. I believe this footage was taken from a TV segment. But I saw them in concert several times over the years and it was always a live show.

Singers and bands mostly lip synced on TV shows . Not just Jan and Dean . Live performances he sang , and quite well given his condition

they actually performed live but the original recordings were overdubbed before the show aired. from the MIke Douglas show I believe.

Amazing how much drugs papa doo could do and still perform.... Jan Berry carried them.
