Yeah... "glottal stops" - that's what I was looking for, right.
I'm German having studied English at uni some time ago. But I didn't remember that exact term immediately.
Isn't it: The accent where they're used characteristically ( maybe approximately what Liam's speaking also ) is the "Cockney" slang ( London area roughly ) ?

    • @empydoodle
      @empydoodle Před měsícem +1

@@Vivarius_RLPBY Yes, the Cockney accent is certainly where they're most widely known for, though Liam's accent isn't quite as.. animated / strong as that. It sounds much more like my own accent, so more of a working class South Eastern accent.
Worth noting as well that glottal stops are used all around the UK, especially in England - Yorkshire/ Lancashire, Geordie and West Country accents (for example) all use them heavily, too!

The saying "It's raining cats and dogs" has quite a dark origin: When stray cats or dogs die, they usually retreat back into alleys or smaller side roads. When the rain was strong enough, those animals were washed out into the street, which turned into the saying "It's raining (so much), cats and dogs (are washed out into the street)."

it's crazy how British her accent is - I am quite flabbergasted! but him living abroad for so long has made his more neutral.
my wife is from the north of england, and her accent has become so neutral after 12 years of living abroad (and many years before that in a very international environment), some people can't even tell if she is from England, America, or Canada.
I used to have a bit of british in my speech when I lived in the UK but it disappeared very quickly and only stayed in the ways I write favourite, colour or centre; the words that I use for things.

Valerie querying raining cats and dogs reminded me of a story my partner tells. She is a fluent German speaker who was teaching English at a German University. During a lesson the class was discussing the day's topic and amongst themselves said "Yes but she said...." Now "she" in that context in English is a minor faux pas. Without thinking my partner said "She ? She is the cat's mother". An old fashioned idiom to discourage children from using 'she' in that context. Cue 20 minute confusion about where the cat came from, why the cat's mother was involved and what was the name of A: the cat and B: the cat's mother and what are the rules about proper nouns for domestic animals. As for raining cats and dogs, it is almost certainly one of those cases where English uses a nonsense term because it is nonsense. See also Nolens volens/Willy nilly.

(Unfortunately my mom didn't speak much German with me growing up, so I got it all from Muzzy, my trips to Germany, some language classes at the Germanic American Institute in elementary school, and also through junior high and high school, but still I was mostly able to skate by on what of the language I had internalized without really mastering new grammar.)

Murmeltier = "marmot" in English - but in the US the term is "groundhog/woodchuck/whistlepig" but that is a totally other marmot genus than those living in the Alps.
If I remember correctly the "raining cats + dogs" saying is actually just and "abbreviation" for "It´s raining heavily. Get´the cats and dogs in" which as "abbreviation" then became an idiom for "heavy rainfall".
"Wer A sagt muß auch B sagen" actually means something a long those lines "Who starts something has to finish it as well - or - Who starts something has to stick with it" or "When chosen a path then no U-turns"

Valeries accent is so little, Germans cannot hear it, only native speakers do. And she's just very confident and never shows a millisecond of beeing insecure about how to say things.
This gives the impression of "she must have been raised bilungual" or even "she must be british".

I could beat that time ... 100 meters is not so bad for under 2 minutes. I could compete in those realms. Time for tea or coffee along the way in fact. Ausgezeichnet!

It's rarely used. People love raincoats and umbrellas and all the things making you behave like sugar in the rain.

Raining cats and dogs: Its because cats and dogs used to be able to walk on the rooves of houses, when the rain fell the slates became slippery and they would fall off the side.

Tegernsee Forster is so different from me yesterday: I saw people at a Lake Michigan beach-with a huge dog and I told them they would have a $500 fine to show for their visit that I would personally witness and sign if they did not immediately leash the dog. Bin ich aber preussisch, kein Bayer…
