Bulgarian here. You guys really have guts! Once I was biking with a friend and we wanted to get into Faculteta but the police stopped us at the entrance and said: If you enter here you will be walking back home (if you are lucky) . We were with bikes, know what I mean :)

According to some historic documents, when Gypsies first came to Europe and tried to settle centuries ago, they were often killed or not allowed to Western European countries. Eastern Europeans, on the other hand, gave Gypsies refuge and tried to integrate them into society. The emphasis remains on TRIED.

И аз това казвам. Едно беше тъжно, второ видеото е като гавра с България. Още от самото начало на видеото с това представяне на родината ни: "мрачна и дъждвона София, България, не е като слънчева Испания."
Този бастун направо си се изгаври с държавата ни. Имаше едно видео за България пак направено от чужденец където представи България чудесно, но по едно време на видеото си я сравни с Испания като каза: "като Испания само че много по-чиста и добре миришеща".
И го гледам сега този испански бастун направил тези видеа за България казвайки тези неща за България каква била мрачна, пък каква била еди каква си. А то всъщност е просто един по-мрачен и дъждовен ден. Той го изкарва като че България перманентно е такава мрачна, сива и навъсена.
Отделен въпрос е каква сме я закъсали с тези цигани и с тази кочина около тези цигански гета.
По света има мн цигани, но тежи живеещите в България ( те не са Българи, само така пише на паспортите им ) са най-ужасни, защото идват от Пакистан. Преди четири-пет години Индийската държава викаше циганите от цял свят да се завърнат в Индия. Щеше ми се тези "наще" да си оберат крушите и да изчезнат за там, но уви, знаех, че само си мечтая.
Really enjoyed the video! As a Bulgarian, you need to have in mind, that every single one approached you with an attempt to take money from you and they were constantly talking between themselves how much money can they take from you. I think the reasons you were safe were the video camera, for one, they are very scared not to go on tape whilst doing something sketchy and second, you really cought them off guard. Considering nobody ever goes there, who is oustide their community. Also, having a buddy is also a good thing for these places.

Maybe surprisingly but completely not true, basically only one guy asked for a couple of pounds and everyone else was just being positive for the most part I mean even the fam with the small shop didn`t want any money for the beers and we are talking about "every single person". Of course ppl were trying to bargain about the horse ride I mean offering them free money for a something that doesn`t really have a market value - would be stupid not to go high 😅 Also they started at 20 not 50 but the language barrier was an issue - should negotiations started at 20 would have easily been a 5bgn ride with basic knowledge of the language and a couple of jokes 😄

Im a bulgarian aswel ive been in many gipsy neighbourhoods,in Vidin,Varna,Bourgas,Plovdiv,Sofia they are always really nice and there were only a couple gipsies that tried to make money from him (for the horse). Gipsy people in their neighbourhoods are really nice,what u just said u say it reading from the internet and watching BTV,not from personal experience. I'm a foreigner living in Bulgaria since 2015, I'm coming from the American continent and Bulgaria is this, but also much more and there are tons of amazing places country wide to go visiting. Nature is jaw dropping, I'm a hiker, mt biker, skier and love to go deep into unknown corners - History and culture is everywhere, from Sofia to the roman ruins in Nessebar-Sozopol, great country to live.
I liked the hospitality of the couple who offered you two free cans of beer, in rich countries they charge highly and exact price to the last penny. ❤ 👍🙏

Bulgarian here. As the others mentioned, Fakulteta is a truly exotic place to the Sofia non-Fakulteta (and non-gypsy) residents, so we all learn a lot from such documentaries. What I observed here, and am not surprised by is the attitude of the young people, who almost exclusively asked for money, without any substantial reason. Then contrast that with the a bit older couple (Ivo and "Chakai" :)), who had a store and had all rights to sell it to you but they gave you free (albeit warm) Pirinsko beers. There is this stark generational contrast, that is discouraging to me and signals for a generation that is sinking, it is disappointing. Georgie on the other hand spent time in England and took with him some westerner attitude and perspective - he spoke a very good English and was eager to talk and exercise the knowledge of the language, not bug you for money. I want all youngsters to be more like him, but if they are stuck in that place you see what direction it develops them towards. The video was a fun experience, but trust me, I was watching with a bit of anxiety as anything could happen in that "barrio"
What you saw was, except at the kebab place which is obviously business, that the Americans spoke about money first. You have no reason to think that the rest of the young people are any different from Djordji.

The Selos (Villages) are usually the more friendly areas. They're not as used to seeing tourists. I've been to many and the people stare a lot, but mostly out of curiosity, especially me being a blonde-hair, green-eyed American. Once they know you learned their language, so many doors open. They admire it. I've learned it. Also, Borat 2, his daughter speaks all Bulgarian. When I watched it my first time, I'm like....holy hell that's Bulgarian!

It's nice that you've learned Bulgarian (after all, Bulgaria is the oldest country in Europe), but blond people with green eyes are not extraordinary. I myself am a blue-eyed, dark blond Bulgarian. People in villages are curious of any strangers, both Bulgarian and foreign. I've also experienced the stare, but this is due to their otherwise uneventful life... Peace!
One thing is worth mentioning: there are no ghettoes in Bulgaria in the sense that is used elsewhere. These used to be normal places to live but have been turned into ghettoes by the residents by building illegally and other activities typical for their lifestyle. In fact a lot of the apartment buildings used to be council housing or owned by state-run companies and provided to the employees for symbolic rent. No one is forced to live in these places it just turns that way when a lot of gypsies live together, they are not forced to do so it also makes the properties cheaper as everyone else runs. They are bad neighbourhoods no doubt, but they are not real ghettoes.
As another Bulgarian I’m telling you - the definition of ghetto is exactly what Faculteta is “a poor urban area occupied primarily by a minority group or groups.”. This is a European GHETTO! Doesn’t Matter who the houses belonged or belong to. :)

We are not idiots, we know the difference from poor but well intended ppl and criminals. My both grandparents were poor peasants, only ate what they grew in their small garden, if they managed to grow something, because most of the time they were forced to work the lands owned by the communists, and everthing was taken by the communists. They were struggling for most of their lives, raising 4 children, while also taking care of their old, sick parents. My father started working in a factory from the age of 16, while also going home all summer to help my grandparents in the garden, and practicing boxing at a pretty high level in the same time. But never in their lives they thought it's a good idea to become criminals, sell their own children for prostitution, or pimping them, stealing, or extorcion, just because they were poor. Ferentari is the home base for some of the most ruthless criminals, pimps, thieves and human traffickers. They are the text book deffinition of a criminal. We could see what western europe has to deal with, when lots of them had to return to romania at the begining of the pandemic. It was the ultimate circus of the criminals. Fights started from the first minute they steped in this country and police teams had to be sent in their slums to stop them from killing eachother on a regular basis. A criminal is a criminal, and i don't care what he's race or nationality is. I will call him a criminal if he's romanian too, or gipsy, or american, or alien.. The political corectness is what is enabling them to stay the way they are, and keep bringing shame upon all of us. I'm sick of this education blaming, since millions of peasants had only 2 or max 4 years in school in the past, and none of them were pimping their children, or ended up doing the horrendous crimes these individuals are doing since forever. People always say that, but very rarely something bad happens and I follow quite a few of CZcamsrs doing this and I have done it myself as well in Latin America in the poorest areas. You need to be careful yes, but in my experience most of the nice people were the poorer people.

Some comments about your own comments.
1. The reason you had a good time and were safe was not that it's a safe neighbourhood. Somebody already mentioned the camera and the fun factor. I would add being exotic and luck to that list. If you were a normal person just lost there, trouble would be easier to find.
2. You said the government has forgotten about this place and its people. Well most of these houses are completely illegal and unregulated. No taxes paid for them. The streets are not present in the official city map. The people only work illegally, so not only do they not pay taxes but they collect unemployment. There is only so much the government can do :) There are many people who escape the ghettos and integrate into society. After a generation or two we don't even consider them gypsies. The defining characteristic of the gypsy ghettos is the lifestyle.

Hi, Elliot. I'm from Bulgaria and I've just noticed your video about Fakulteta. It is actually a ghetto, but not as dodgy and dangerous as foreigners would think. People who live there are in fact nice and friendly. Apart from the outskirts, the modern part of the city is also worth visiting. There are also beautiful villages around Sofia which are not dodgy at all. On the contrary, they are very beautiful. I live in one of them. I'm Bulgarian, but I don't see it this way. Bulgarians are dinosaurs to each other. We play nice to Western Europeans or American people because for sure we don't have uneducated and unintegrated gipsies to take the population. For the people in these videos, there are no laws. They can kill you for just two leva, rob you and if you have a female with you assault her.
They don't go to universities and colleges to study. At best, they graduate from middle high school. They are richer than most native Bulgarians because they mostly do fraud and robbery business. A large percentage of their houses are built illegally and yet there's no law for them.
If everything was beautiful and friendly as the person who writes above, there wouldn't be immigration from Bulgarians. There is a reason why Bulgaria is the fastest-shrinking country in the world. Many left for the money and many like me to meet good people, not Bulgarians.
If you notice why every house you see in Bulgaria has a huge 2-meter wall with no sight of what's inside. Compare to UK short walls below 1,50 meters. It's because either to prevent robbery or to prevent talking by other Bulgarians. Jealousy is a huge factor here. The mentality of Bulgarian people is not to achieve a better life, but to heat their cold hearts with others' misery and suffering.

Bulgaria is not a good place to live. It's not Sunny Beach, Varna, Albena, Pomorie, Sozopol, Nessebar, Bansko, Pamporovo etc. that you see in tourist ads. It's a harsh place to survive.

@@efthymioszagkountinos7379 My comment was not about the country in general, but about this district of Sofia in particular 😀 Sorry, if that was not clear. Fakulteta is basically a ghetto, this is not a regular neighborhood in Sofia, so very few people visit there.

I mean in Bulgaria if you get robbed by gypsies they tend to just take the cash and they don't tend to show violence if you don't resist and most bulgarins don't report these crimes as it is very difficult to locate the thieves as some of them have no documents or identification and it is just not worth the hassle for like 10-20 EUR usually so it does seem the crime rate is lower than it is. On the other hand Bulgaria has a very small population compared to other EU countries like the entire country has close to 7 million people while London alone has nearly 10, so naturally the crimes will be in severely less numbers compared to countries like England for example just based on the sheer number of people plus as the other person said it does depend a lot on the districts. So all in all yes there are not that many crimes or grape or murder but pickpocketing and thieving is something that does occur quite a lot.

I am ethnic Bulgarian, my family has lived in Sofia since 1913. I remember when I was a little boy my grandmother took the wrong way by car and entered Fakulteta, the local Gypsy people showed us the way. Then I personally went there several times without having any problems. It's true that there are sometimes more harms about some of these people there...

I'm Italian, I've been living in Sofia for more then 5 years. I can def tell you this is not Bulgarian ghetto, but a gypsy slum, same one that you can find in any other Eastern European city. You need to be/look more relaxed when you go in to this kind of places, they could really tell you were genuinely scared from your body language, they could tell you were only saying hello not to show respect, but because you were scared. Anyway I'm glad that you were 2 people and not one, that probably prevented them to come kidnapp you, but hey anywa you have balls certainly no one can say the opposite brother. 👌👌

Hello Elliot. As a Bulgarian, nice work I'm glad for your interest to our country even if it's in the ghetto of Bulgaria as you call it. Please do your homework, the Romanian are not romani people(gypsies). Two different words, the one is country the other is like ethnic-. Every country has gypsy people even Usa and UK. And also in Bulgaria we are too, speaking Romanian but Bulgarian people, not gypsy. They are many words and meanings you can wrong. Love and respect for all countries and ethnics❤
This is essentially an autonomous zone inside Sofia. The law enforcement doesn't have (isn't allowed) much reach in gypsy ghettos. The possibility of something bad happening is large. And the fact that the police will most likely be unable to do anything, or at least anything in time, makes it even worse.
But today it's OK they are receiving more than many other peoples
Romany people are of Indian origin( Rajasthan) not a Romanian one ,the Indian government has recognised them officialy.

I had Roma Gypsies move in next to me in the UK...i've never been so unhappy or had so much stress in my life...with a baby too. Drug dealing, loud noisy parties until the early hours, illegal nursery, all sorts of people coming and going, no one working, shouted and sweared at on my doorway, rubbish dumped all over, and all that during lockdown when i was working from home. Authorities couldn't have cared less...dnt be fooled

The second horse guy initially asked you for 20 leva (approx. 10 EUR), which is reasonable. They are poor, they are gypsies and you are a tourist, so they assumed you would have had a lot more money hence they started a 50 leva bargain.

When I travel, I personally love to stay in places like this for longer, than some overpriced tourist trap and resort areas. In such areas you can actually see real people and I personally enjoy gritty vibe.

I worked at Fakulteta as a social worker. It's pretty safe actually,in the day.
Of course our working time was over 16:30 (pm) for safety reasons.
Most Fakulteta people don't know English so you shouldn't be afraid speaking your own language.
Keep in mind people there can be thin skinned so it's possible you offend their honour without even knowing so be careful with the jokes.
But overall gypsies are pretty chill people, that's my experience working with/for them

These people live there whithout any papper for any property, but instead tends they have or at least some of them cool new houses from bricks. 😅 Imagine if anyone could come and build anything whenever and wherever he likes. I was there in 2008, as a 18y old dumb teenager. Me and my friend covered us as 'journalists'. We were welcomed by the young kids and older generation. But as time proceeded the tension with 'the in between generation' was getting too much. We sort of ran out of there, luckily not bitten by dogs :)
Woow this was so interesting 😄 I am from Varna, Bulgaria, in Varna we also have big gypsy neighbourhood called Maksuda, I would never even think to go there to explore. You are adventurous and more importantly, not prejudices. The thing is that, they are people like all other, with different culture, they understand life just for fun and living for the day. I don't blame them, but most of then are highly undereducated and can barely write. During the communism time in Bulgaria, all the gypsies went to school, we treated better, the government made efforts for them to behave and be normal integrated people. Nowadays there is a huge gap between bulgariana and gypsies, it is kind if sad, but explainable in the same time.

I am Italian and I go to Sofia sometimes for work. It's a city that I really like and there are lots of things to see and places to visit. Aside from wanting to pull a stunt which is quite common at your age, if you haven't stolen something and want to resell it or buy something stolen, why go to Fakulteta?
There are places like this all over the world. I was in much more danger on the Atlanta metro, in the suburbs of Des Moins or in Falchera in Turin than in Sofia

Just to clarify as your reference to Romani people was quite unclear, Romani are not Romanians or Romanians living outside of Romania.. in fact they are not related to Romanians in any shape or form. It’s just a coincidence that the names are so similar. Romani are a Indo Aryan ethnic group that migrated from what is today India.
