Bizarre Things That Happened On The Set Of The Wizard Of Oz

- The Wizard of Oz is one of the most beloved films of all time, and it continues to delight (and horrify) children to this day. But the story of the film’s production is far more horrifying than a swarm of flying monkeys or a cackling witch. The costumes may look impressive, but they were disgustingly hot and even life-threatening. While Judy Garland wasn’t subjected to a heavy costume, she was still treated horribly on set. From the on-set drinking to the health hazards that would never fly today, let’s take a look at some bizarre things that actually happened on the set of The Wizard of Oz.

Did we leave any bizarre things out? Don't say the hanging man, you're better than that.
Judy Garland was off her tits on uppers and downers given to her so the film could get made on time, the shooting schedule was extreme. This started her history of substance abuse which led to her death.
well its true, you know!
damn seriously? Wow. thats really sad
What about the hanging munchkin?
Grunge yes you left out the wierd part when scarecrow has a gun ...i seen this movie about 30 times growing up and he never had a gun before but he does now ..
after they visit the wizard the first time and get sent to get the witches broomstick and walking in the dark forest scarecrow has a gun .tinman has a massive hammar and more crazy stuff.
You left out the part about how they drugged and abused Dorothy
Just saw a story on her found out her mom made her and her sisters to take sleeping pills at night and some other stuff to perk them up in the a.m...they were an act together and thats where the addiction started ..sad
DA SUPADUPA yeah the mother started it and lied about the pep pills, so the studios gave her the same medication plus a steady supply of sleeping pills to knock her out at night. So she was getting twice as much as the studios thought, even tho what they gave her alone was much more than enough and way more than any child should ever take.
@@virgie4715 wow wheres the info?
Alex Smith Lorna Lucy has spoken out about a lot of it, even wrote a book that was later a movie. Then, there’s also an interview from an E! documentary that was about her, her family doctor’s wife spoke out even though it sounds like she was more taking up for her husband and the studios.
@@virgie4715 thanks i read on her biography and you're right.

Bad things happened during production, unfortunately. But it turned out to be one of the best films ever, obviously, and one of my favorite's as a kid.
What people don't think about, in picking on the MGM "Wizard," is that all movies present dangers and difficulties to the people involved in making them. Glenn Strange, playing the Frankenstein Monster in "Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein," broke his ankle during filming. Lon Chaney, Jr., who played the Wolf Man in that movie, shot a scene or two as the Monster while Glenn was recovering.

Not to mention during the scene between Dorothy and the Cowardly lion

Danny Blue Lol...it was said 2 times. I saw on a site where someone repeated a phrase like 5 times. I did mention it. Talk about annoying!!!
Danny Blue Why are people on CZcams always trying to bring other people down? World is full of hateful ass people.
A few other things not mentioned: 1) The Wicked Witch originally said and did some more scary stuff, which got cut after the reactions of some preview audiences. One thing is that her skywriting originally said "SURRENDER DOROTHY OR DIE". If you pay attention the Cowardly Lion reading this out loud, you can discern that the last two words have been cut. 2) In addition to the elimination of the costly "Jitterbug" number, there was also an immense parade sequence in the Emerald City when Dorothy and the gang returned with the Wicked Witch's broom. This too got cut to shorten the movie, and it involved hundreds of celebrating extras. The only footage of it that survives appears in the original movie preview, for just a split-second. 3) Speaking of "SURRENDER DOROTHY", that was achieved by aiming the camera upwards towards a bowl of milk directly above it, and the words were written by a syringe filled with black ink - which had to be done backwards so the letters would read correctly.
Hollywood is so the in thing to hate right now (because of orange one) but there is so much creative genius there. What an amazing product Hollywood puts out and it employs thousands. But it seems the right is hoping to KILL IT. They should be ashamed.

The asbestos tip actually freaked me out. I was hazmat certified in the Marine Corp. and we were told horror stories about asbestos. So the fact that they were immersed in the stuff nearly made me jump out of the chair in a total "WTF?!" moment.

@@GgGg-zc2ue yup
now i look back at this, this movie is horrifying
The movie itself is delightful, and the cast would be insulted that people wouldn't want to watch it just because some accidents happened. Any movie has its hazards; at least nobody got killed, as happened with "Twilight Zone: The Movie."
I always thought that the reason they used the same actor for the Wizard as the Wizard's guard was because we were supposed to know that it was the same person.....The Wizard at first could not let them in, lest he be exposed so he went out in disguise to tell them to leave...Then he was moved by Dorothy's story and said "I'll get you in to see the Wizard," because he knew he had the authority as the Wizard himself to make that decision. How else do we explain that the Wizard who was really just a normal mortal man, knew ahead of time what each of them wanted?
ferociousgumby but again, without resorting to the excuse that it was all just a dream how do we explain that the wizard knew ahead of time what each of them was wanting
That is a really good theory. I watched the movie every year is was on TV, ever since I was a kid even when I was in high school and I never even thought about that.
Rich Brown Thought the same growing up.
Okay, I have to ask...
who else is forgetting that it all was probably just a dream... ?
That was AMAZING! And makes sense.
i love the wizard of oz but kinda sucks to know that was real lion hyde :( damn.

I'm afraid. Very afraid....(shudders)
Animal death scenes in early movies were often real as well. At least that is what I heard years ago.
+Roy Rouell Like in "Apocalypse Now", when they chopped off the head of a water buffalo...
still don't know whether that was true or not...
There is no robot in the movie dude. It's a tin man.
Know your classics.
He was obviously an automaton, not a robot.
Actually he was a human woodsman who cut off his limbs one by one (I think a witch cursed him or something) and had each replaced by tin substitutes until he was all tin.
Irony ?
Audrée Adam Lol !!!!
When I first heard that the cowardly lion's costume was real, I was shocked Glinda's costume was really pretty and Billie Burke was great as the Good Witch. The entire cast was great and very talented. I loved the flying monkeys and the munchkins
Of course his costume was real; they hadn't invented motion capture yet. Yes, I know what you meant; the thing is, we human beings have been wearing animal skins, fur, scales, teeth, claws, bones, and various other things ever since we've worn anything. You know all those fur coats you see ladies in the Golden Age of Hollywood wearing? Those ain't faux!
And it's Winged Monkeys. I have no idea why people think they're called "flying monkeys." ;-)

marla79 Yep. Lucky me!😀
Those were the days!
It's funny how back when we were kids watching this movie for the first time that the snow scene felt genuine and magical, yet little did we know that "snow" was actually extremely dangerous.
This movie might be a classic and played a key role in the history of movie making, but damn did the actors get the short end of the stick. From the incident with the original Tin Man to the witch catching on fire, it was a mess. What were they thinking with Aluminum dust? And using fire in unsafe ways?
All things considered, this movie was magical, the sacrifices made to create it and to give us a timeless classic were all worth it in the end. Unfortunately, many of the actors paid a price that lasted a life time. Some even dying from it.
The same thing happened on Little House on the Prairie apparently. Several of the actors got cancer
Hearing all this stuff really changes my mind about this Movie
It shouldn't. The cast and crew were all very proud of it. They would be insulted if other people didn't like it. Bear in mind that a lot of this stuff is either exaggerated or untrue.

Shirley Temple was wanted first for the role of Dorothy, but she couldn't get out of her contract. Personally, I think she would have been too cutesy and perky for the role. Judy simply nailed it. And of course, how mediocre would Shirley's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" been?
I can hear Shirley now:
"Somewhere over the rainbow,
I'll learn how to siiiiing
Because my voice while I'm singing,
Is such an awful thiiiing!"
This has been written repeatedly but I've also read this never really was a consideration. In reality, Shirley's career was rapidly declining when "Wizard" was getting started and it's very unlikely MGM seriously did want to use her.
she was too young for the role
Mervyn LeRoy always considered "Wizard" as a starring vehicle for Judy. Other people thought about Shirley, but it never got beyond talk.
+Andrew Grove Shirley was ten years old, which was a perfect age for the role; in the book, Dorothy was possibly as young as six and certainly no older than ten.
When Fairuza Balk played Dorothy in "Return to Oz," she was all of nine years old. Yekaterina Mikhaylovskaya, who played Ellie Smith, the Russian version of Dorothy in a 1994 adaptation of "Wizard," was even younger.

the movie also references poppies which is when I found out why they fell asleep in the poppy fields.
The movie had a deadly poppy field because the book had a deadly poppy field. The main difference is that in the book it was a naturally occurring phenomenon, whereas in the movie it was a spell cast by the Wicked Witch.
Maybe in the book it was 'deadly', but with a bit of help from science I can tell you that poppy seeds are opiates (basically a more natural version of heroin) so the fact that in the movie, they fall asleep, is a result of being slightly high.

They were pretty cruel to Judy Garland.
No more "cruel" than anyone was to anyone in those days.
@@MaskedMan66 So, that makes it excusable ?
What, precisely, do you think "it" is? I can almost guarantee that you've been fed some info that was at best exaggerated and at worst made up from whole cloth.
@@MaskedMan66 "It", obviously refers to the aforementioned disrespect and cruelty given to Judy Garland as a child actress. For example, slapping a child because she giggled during a scene - who does that?!!) That is blatant abuse. By the way, you might want to check your colossal ego at the door. Who died and appointed you 'king' of all things Oz-related ? You have tried to correct almost every commenter on this video who does not agree with your own perception of events. Find another focus - your arrogance is quite off-putting. SMH sadly.
Aforementioned? You didn't say a thing except, "They were pretty cruel to Judy Garland," which I already said wasn't true. Cruelty involves a deliberate and malicious desire to hurt someone, and that wasn't anyone's intention.
I will tell you "who does that." A former prize fighter turned movie director named Victor Fleming, a husband and the father of two little girls. A normal person, in other words. And you might like to know the whole story:
Bert Lahr's crying routine as the Cowardly Lion was so funny that Judy got into a laughing fit. She tried to control herself, but she kept laughing and ruined take after take. Up against the wall and running out of time, Fleming took Judy aside and slapped her to get her to take things seriously. She did so and finished the scene without breaking up-- though even in the finished film, you can see her mouth twitch. :-)
Now this is the bit you need to hear. After the scene wrapped, Fleming, who had once had his nose broken in the ring, took someone aside and said, "I want you to slug me and break my nose again."
"Why?" asked the man.
"Because I hated what I did to that little kid."
Judy happened to overhear this, and she sauntered out from behind a prop tree. "I won't break your nose," she said to Fleming, "but I will kiss it." So saying, she stood on tiptoe and did.
No-one died and I am scarcely a king. I have, however, researched this movie for decades and know a few things, things that anyone else can know and pass on as I do. Like now you can tell that story to anyone who brings up the slap to try and slander Victor Fleming.
That was really great , thanks!

That movies video quality was amazing for back when it was realised
You forgot that one of the munchkin hanged themselves and you can see it in the background
This is the creepiest movie ever!
Cami Castle yes!
when I was five it wasn't (btw im 12 rn, just so you don't think im like 80 years old)
Just imagine if they would of followed the book...the story of how the tin man became the tin man is creeeeppy!
LifeOfCandice how did he become the tin man
littleXXcookie the tin man became the Tim man because he was a human but the witch made him chop off his limbs and then he'll replace them with tin parts
Yeah, that was pretty interesting. I love The Wizard of Oz. It's one of my all time favorite movies. Thumbs up.
I don't think death from cancer 50 years after filming was asbestos as that acts much sooner.
Charles Macgilchrist Ur last name is AMAZING❤God bless💕
no it's fibres can lie dormant for decades in the lungs and throat! it can also cause a disease known as Plural Plaquing which scars the lungs making it difficult to breath! or mesothelioma which causes a "lining" to form outside the lung restricting their expansion again making it difficult to breath! essentially choking sufferers to death over a lengthy time! who can say if these people died of smoking or asbestos or maybe a mix of both?
Asbestos con be in your system for years and never show any systems until years later there are people who were in contact with the staff 40 50 years ago and just now finding out that they have cancer because of it.
I remember when I was kid watched it with my mam god rest her soul frightened the living shite out of me but still love to watch it every time its on the living TV
You're Irish, aren't you? ;-)
Awesome video!
Another little tidbit. The Lollie Pop Guild was made to look like W.C. Fields, who the producers had hoped to cast as the Wizard. Fields refused the role after several attempts by the producers to procure him, but there wasn’t time enough to change the Lollie Pop Guild’s facial costumes.
It's Lollipop, and no, they just ended up looking similar to Fields. I rather think they had Edward G. Robinson more in mind.
My son, 7 years old, watched it for the first time a few weeks ago and noticed something I never did in 100 views...the scarecrow pulls a handgun out in a scene. Did anyone else notice this?
Me it’s probably the first or second Easter egg in the movie!
" . . . and your little dog, too!"
when I was a boy in the '60's I met one of the munchkins. he was actually one of the lollipop league. i can't remember his name but he went on to act the rest of his life with his brother who was also one of the cast. He confirmed to me that at least some of the little people who were employed for this film had never been around other little people and there were so many of them that it gave them a sense of power that they had never known. As a result there was indeed some misbehavior among them. One can hardly be surprised.
I'm betting it was Jerry Maren.
Great video I always loved the film as a kid
you DID leave something out: The Hanging Munchkin
There was no hanging Munchkin just a myth..
I disagree ...methinks the Muppet hung !!
@@chandluhshgahc There are a hundred reasons why that is not true. The first and most important was the fasct that during the filming of those scenes the actors who portrayed the munchkins were not yet contracted and nowhere near the set. That is a well documented fact....
@@harryfishback8173 no it was real, the people that still survived from the set even said
Billie Burke, The Good Witch of the North, used to advertise menthol cigarettes as a way to cure "A ticklish throat" she died of throat cancer.
Djarra She did not die of throat cancer - she died of natural causes.
oh the irony
Billie Burke was hilarious in "Topper Returns".
Djarra oh the irony
Kaitlyn Boisvert - And further, she didn't smoke, either. She couldn't stand it. Matter of fact, she got her husband, Florenz Ziegfeld to quit smoking.
Buddy Ebsen did have a role in the film. He was the guard who exclaims, "You did it. You've killed her !" He says this line in full close-up.
Wrong. That's actor Shep Houghton.
Venom101002 Wrong. That's actor Mitchell Lewis.
Asbestos!!!... Wow!
thank you for sharing this video i loved it. 4:57
The snow was gypsum.
Thanks. Lots of cool stuff there.
1:16 I never noticed it was a men’s voice. NOW it sounds like a man.
Ikr
Am i the only one that wanted the scarecrow and Dorothy together?
Later on Liza Minelli married the Tin Man's son.
TwistedAngel and in wicked the witch and the scarecrow end up together lol
Your not alone on that.
I always shipped Dorothy and Tinman
there was a subplot that Dorothy and Hunk, the farmhand did have a relationship, but that was cut for time
I spoken with one of the little people from the movie around 1997 or 98. It was super cool seen the little old lady.
God bless her.
I love this channel💜
That leftover footage of the jitterbug scene creeps me out.
"And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true...."
The Cowardly Lion showing his "This is some pretty fucking disturbing weather we're having." face in the thumbnail is what brought me here.
one of the greatest movies of all times
It is not true that Buddy Ebsen did not appear in the film. He was the Wicked Witch's guard who exclaims about the Witch's demise and allowed Dorothy to take the burnt remainder of the Witch's broom. He said his first line with a full camera close-up.
It is true that he did not appear in the film; the Winkie Captain was played by Mitchell Lewis. Ebsen's voice can still be heard, however, when everyone is singing "We're Off to See the Wizard"; Jack Haley only re-recorded the Tin Woodman's solo lines.
Sorry, that guard was not Buddy Epsen.
+Alan Smithee Quite right, nor was he Buddy Ebsen.
Amazing cinematography for it's time.
Thank you.
Frank Morgan was a Medic during WW1. He and Clark Gable discovered how ill Jean Harlow really was during a visit and called an ambulance. Too late unfortunately.
wow... didn't know that and it certainly was unfortunate. JH was a great actress.
I've seen him a few times on Gunsmoke as the banker.
"Sweat included" 😂😂😂😂😂
i read somewhere once that Margaret Hamilton lost her purse and she had the witch nose in it at the time. whoever found it must have been surprised when he/she found the witch nose in the purse
Yup! :-) That was, I believe, after the movie wrapped. She had kept the nose as a souvenir.
Margaret Hamilton had a non-speaking cameo role in an episode of The Patty Duke Show. Although she didn't speak, her facial expressions were hilarious.
sheepwolf2004 Lol !!!!
@@bobbyslater1198 I remember! Patty (the character) was appearing as both herself and Cathy at a party in her dad's house. Miss Hamilton played a maid-- named Margaret, I do believe-- who had been hired for the event.
Buddy Ebsen actually DID get to appear in the movie. The scene where the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion march into the witch's palace in guards outfits actually has Ebsen as the Tin Man. The scene was shot before he fell ill and never reshot when he was replaced.
That's not true; all of Richard Thorpe's footage had been destroyed by that time.
@@MaskedMan66 As understand the events, the Thorpe footage was not used as MGM wanted a more colorful look to the film, not the more drab tones used by Thorpe. Part of Ebsen's performance of "We're Off to See the Wizard" remains as you can hear his midwestern pronunciation of the "r" in "Wizard," unlike Haley's Boston accident. I don't have time to search the source for the claim about the marching into the castle scene, but will try to find it. Until then, we will have to agree to disagree.
This is crazy! I never knew any of this, in watchmojo they said they used asbestos for the snow in the field scene!
This movie is my favorite all time classic to watch. I love it so much that I can watch it over and over.
The Munchkin performed at my grandfather’s movie theater in Ohio. My father met them and he said yes they were drinking and swearing.
Which ones?
These are things I've never known about the film
Shut up
Who remembers the scarecrow carrying a gun? I don’t! The ‘fly my pretties’ line is gone as well. Research the Mandela Effect.
I remember the fly my pretties its a mandella effect but ive always noticed the gun with the scare crow
