  • @macks2025
    @macks2025 Před měsícem

    There are several points which need to be checked before replacing the knobs:
    1. - shaft diameter. All Japanese and Euro synths use 6mm diameter. Unlike American and guitar knobs which use quarter inch = 6.35mm - which will fall off the 6mm shaft.
    2. - type of shaft. D-shaft, or D-type, or sometimes called flat sided. And spline shaft, or push-on or star shaft. On D-shaft knobs relation to the indicator line is important as outlined in the video. For spline shaft it isn't because ther is 36 degrees at which indicator line can be set (as opposed to just one on d-shaft).
    3. - recess on the knob. Can see that at 11:10 how the yellow knob sits much higher than the original black because the yellow one has no recess for the mount. Too high recess on the knob and it wont turn the shaft to much positve recess and it will look like the knob doesn't belong to the device.
    4. - diameter and height of the knob (also in relation to the recess for the d-mount). There is usually a bit of allowance here, in most cases knobs can be wider which helps with more precise setting before it starts overlapping the inscription or getting too close to adjacent knobs (Volca and Modal Craft2, Aira, etc). Too short knobs will make the pots look like mushrooms and a cheap mistake.
    In regards to painting-over the indicator lines - it is the least expensive solution. Obviously don't do it mounted on the synth (why would you do that anyway: you want the synth to look better not worse) and don't do it if you have monkey grip with a finesse of a hammer. Otherwise take a trip to your local modeller shop and peruse the selection of paint applicators for model making. There is 10s if not 100s of colour options to choose from specifically for precision marking. On my monologue I opted for aluminium silver colour indicator lines so it matches the aluminium switches. Horses for courses.

    I’m amused you like this potential rainbow arrangement but was put off by the a lot more subdued red and black of the Minilogue Bass 😂

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  Před měsícem

      you can change the panel and knob color, but don't mess with the black keys! yeah, fair points, but something must be done with these useless knobs. this synth is all about programming so this still seems the best option.

      @T0NYFERRELL1 Před měsícem

      @@WoodyPianoShack true, tactility is so important for a device like this. Maybe you can source some quality metal ones with clear indicators. We’re on a slippery slope here, this is how mechanical keyboard enthusiasts keep trying to find the ultimate keycap and never be satisfied.

  • @amyl.9477
    @amyl.9477 Před měsícem

    If you’re going to mod a keeper, don’t use a white marker, use actual white paint (perhaps like a plastic model paint or maybe an artist’s acrylic paint, probably not industrial stuff with harsh thinners unless you know it won’t melt the plastic) to fill the grooves, then wipe the surface clean. (In ceramic arts this technique is called mishima.) This should work and there’s almost no way to not get clean lines because how clean the white lines get would depend only on the shape of the grooves and the grooves are clean lines

    I call these knobs (the ones you had already) the "yamaha knobs" because these are on almost every Yamaha synth I have. But now they are using ruberry knobs that I find quite uggly (on my Montage M6) but that's a matter of taste. The chines knobs you just received are a little less nice because of the white base I prefer the colored base on the Yamaha knobs :)

    I've been wanting something similar for my Native Instruments A49. I always get confused with visually mapping the onscreen KK controls with the A49 controls ... is it knob 5 or knob 6, or knob 7? So you're constantly counting from the left to right! Even worse when Komplete Kontrol decides to miss a controller out and you have a gap in one of the bank of 8. Yes the A49's controlls have touch feedback but that's only for the tiny screen. Sorry for the long rant but I hope you see my point. Thanks for another useful video Woody

    • @WoodyPianoShack

  • @Roikat
    @Roikat Před měsícem

    I never noticed this problem, as the Monologue is such a simple synth I seldom look at the knob positions. What bugs me about the stock knobs is that (despite a nice feel) they are dust magnets, and dust that lands on them sticks to them and chemically integrates into the knob.

    Do understand your point, yet... With pots an actual position indicates what setting you're actually having. With encoders (like on the Korgs) they are giving pulses that are recorded and stored if desired. Recalling a sound may have a knob lets say at 12 o'clock while the actual setting may be 5 o'clock. Hope this makes sense 🤣🤠
