    I looked into this since it was a 5 year old video and I didn't want to recall from memory. But as stated in this video, this bike actually was designed from Suzuki with both gaskets as shown in the parts fiche: www.partzilla.com/catalog/suzuki/motorcycle/2004/rm85l/muffler

      @@How2Wrench what grease should we use for the install of the cooper gaskets when the manual says apply a light coat of grease to the new copper gasket?

    • @gregburls3699

      So it doesnt tell you on that bike to use abgrease,but what would be sufficient to use on copper gaskets as a lubricant?

    Love this channel! Just did a full rebuild of my son's 2005 kx100 with confidence gained from watching this channel. Went smooth as butter and runs like a champ. I actually took the exhaust back off and switched this copper gasket around right after watching this video. Didn't even notice one side was flat. My factory service manual also shows nothing about it. Great knowledgeable videos! SHANE ROCKS!

    Working on a GL1100 restoration and could not find this information in the factory repair manual. I actually hadn't noticed the lip until after I mocked up one side. So glad I hadn't torque the header down yet. Sure enough one was correct the other was not. Your explanation/logic behind the correct installation is spot on to me. Thank you! absolutely fantastic information.

    Thank you!!!!!!! I also wondered why it has a seam on one side. Sadly in my nation (India) roadside mechanics and service centers do crappy jobs, so I fix all my vehicles myself. And when I asked for copper gasket they handed me a cork gasket, which I clearly knew wasn't supposed to be used as why would a company use an expensive copper gasket had cork gasket sufficed? I searched a lot and finally found OEM copper gasket and wondered which way it would go. Then I found your video! Thank you man! Attention to detail is very important in machines!

    I believe it is the opposite. I put the flat side out, here is why: the flat side matches the diameter of the pipe, the pipe pushes the gasket and the other side of the gasket will be pressed on the cylinder head surface and expands on it taking the shape of the gasket seat. It expands outwards though, when the same time the flat surface (which seems to cover also the internal diameter of the gasket) will prevent the gasket expand inwards as it seems harder material... Basically it's all about expanding outwards mostly. The bike sounds so sweet, if I am wrong I will let you know in a couple of months maybe...? I took a small risk as the bike does not have much life left with me, so I took the risk for you.

      Like I say...it “really” doesn’t matter or the manual would specify BUT I feel pretty confident about my method and you’re only focused on your gasket with a flat side, many are rounded on both sides...

      I agree 100% you want the seamless side in contact with the steel pipe since it hammers on the surface from sonic pressure waves/spring action with the seam side is firmly planted against and jammed in the exhaust port. Because some bikes use high temp O-rings the function of the copper is also for protecting the cylinder exhaust port surface from chafe damage. Some o-ring sealed designs forgo the copper gasket due to a more solid support. At the end of the day it matters not as these are dirt bikes with associated low time between exhaust removal. I have been installing the copper gaskets this way since they invented H2 triples.

    About to put the exhaust back on my atc 200s, has a copper smash gasket like that. Theory or not, i agree with way you would install it.
    Oddly enough, i just did the top end on my 2006 RM85. Didn't have a smashable gasket like that inside. Just a flat, thin, (maybe cooper?) washer looking deal. It does however have a Bill's Pipes exhaust, the expansion chamber has one, wider, silicone gasket (that i ended up replacing with two stock one cause i couldn't find the right one)
    Idk if it's all the correct parts, or even right, but it doesn't leak somehow lol

    Surprisingly, mine didn't have any in/on it to start with despite the fact that they are shown on parts schematics. Additionally, the OEM gaskets I ordered don't seem to have a flat side (I'll have to check a bit more closely).

  • @larrygonzales821
    @larrygonzales821 Před 5 lety

    Air cooled gasoline powered aircraft engines use the type of gaskets in a lot of different applications and the sealed side goes to what get installed. So, not trying to contradict you but my experience tells me that the seam side would go to the head and the crush side to the pipe. Just installed a set on my 96 FXDL and will let you know if they leak.

    Good video. I have similar copper gaskets on my 2014 CB1100. I just finished installing a Moriwaki exhaust and it sounds like the exhaust is leaking at the header because it is making a lot of noise even though I have new gaskets in there. I had to wrangle with the pipes a bit to get them all connected and seated and am wondering if I didn’t get a good seal because of that. I bought extra gaskets in case this happened and will start over with a new set and hopefully have better luck.

      It is not the pipe manufacturer that determines this, its the engine manufacture design. Many 2-stroke exhaust systems use an o-ring system.

    I have a 1977 kz650 I put a Delcevic header on and I got copper gaskets . I saw the seam but mine are round with no flat side. I looked and looked for weeks( delkevic said it didn't matter) so I just installed them. Now they don't seem to want to seal. I am afraid of over tightening them. They still leak very slightly. Any advice. Wish I had stumbled upon this site sooner. I subbed for future though. Thanks for your effort to bring us the info.

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  Před 3 lety

      Have really good clean threads and tighten slowly back and forth across the exhaust. There is a tq spec in the manual and you should be able to create the proper "crush" of the gasket and hit the tq. Problem is that dirty threads of clamps dragging across rusty or even bent studs (usually from over tq in the past) can give you a "false torque" not really compressing the gasket. Get a good "eye" that everything is tightening down even across all the clamps too...

      He just returned from overseas training techs and his inbox is slammed with requests. He is scheduling time each day again to answer techline orders. He does not have the bandwidth to provide free email replies as his schedule is full with shop customers, training schedules, and one on ones.
      There's good news though! Shane has 2 solutions for you. One is a deep dive one-on-one with him with video, email and phone support. The other is a "quick fan support" option when it's a quick answer and just helps support the time for him to stop wrenching or training and get you in the direction that a free video had you close. • @Chainspike101
    @Chainspike101 Před 5 lety +1

    Mine didn't have a flat side.... It was completely round ring... It wouldn't matter anyways because, if you look at the old ones they're totally crushed flat from the factory, they're crush gaskets that flatten out when the MM torque spec is applied. So once you torque them down they crush out anyways and go flat. That's how they seal and make a good fit is by crushing down to make up for any small differences between the head and header pipe and provide positive contact between both. So which direction isn't going to matter if the thing looks like a pancake when you're done anyways...

    After adjusting the fork hight on a ninja 400 the exhaust was resting on a jack just enough to adjust the forks without all the front end weight on the jack, and after the adjustment riding for about 20 miles the bike began making a loud tick at 10,000rpm max hp, I thought it needed a valve adjustment but when I got home I tightened the exhaust header bolts to 2ft-lbs each and the tick stopped, so if the bolts on those copper gaskets arn't evenly tight with a torque wrench the slight leak sound is horrible,,,,and never rest the bike on the headers either.😮

Herea the only detail im after now,I'm replacing the headers and full exhaustion a 202 h2 sxse,in the manual,after saying to replace the copper gaskets,it states"use grease to install gaskets" Now,as you said,nothing about the direction of the gaskets,so will go with your recommendation,but EXACTLY WHAT kind of grease are they referring too? I have drawers of different types of grease,from vasoline to aero shell 64 synthetic,so what are they talking about for grease?? Thank you much for any input!!

    I am confused. The "flat side" of my gasket shows a flange that would naturally create direction of flow issues if installed on the engine side. Otherwise it should expand like an O ring when compressed. I've dealt with a lot of laminar flow considerations during the coarse of my 60 year career. But I could be wrong as bike mechanic that knows what he is doing always takes the front seat.

      Good question and I'm sure others would like clarity. Many of these gaskets are actually "flat". For clarity on every year, make, model, size, brand, design, or any other possibility lets roll with a seam or no seam...or folded edge or no to intersecting ends. Hope this helped.

    I'm not against this the only thing I think about is how it's going to crush on the crack side to the muffler my thought was it wouldn't catch both ends and fold in half or only crush one side and it not have full gasket crushed once again just a thought

      There is PLENTY of "real estate" is how I describe it. It will honestly work both ways as described but my demonstration shows being a mechanic with intention. Also next time you install take a look and think about what direction the pressure is going.

    Dont like copper gaskets.I tend to remove my exhaust for cleaning.Its a one time use only.Can be expensive cleaning a motorcycle propley

  • @gtrmadman4127
    @gtrmadman4127 Před 2 lety

    But surely the diameter of the outlet of the engine is significantly smaller when you look in , the actual diameter of the gasket sits wider in the hole and once exhaust is in place the gasket won’t be in direct release of flow ! But then again I’m no mechanic and I’m sure your experience outways my thinking ❤️

      That’s a great question for Shane directly! We are just the social media team. He is overseas training techs until the 19th but is trying to schedule time each day to answer techline orders yet.
      Shane has a solution for you. As far as the question, Shane does answer questions when he get's back around to non members eventually so hang tight, FYI >>>> he does member ones daily!
      He is just returning from an extended stay in Japan training students this winter. You can imagine how full his inbox is. We put orders are to the front of the line.

    I could NOT for the life of me get my OEM gaskets out my motorcycle. They are smashed in there against that dam head.
    Considering the bike has only 1300 miles 2 months old, it's brand new basically, I left oem ones.
    I couldn't even get them popped out with my dental pic I use to clean my guns from tiny gunk spots

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  Před 4 lety +1

      A few tips...1. The crushed gasket is normal and designed to do so as its a one-time use and creates a good seal for temperature expansion. 2. If the gasket was "serverly" crushed, I would be concerned the exhuast studs may be stretched for over-tightening and need replaced to avoid breaking off while operating. 3. If they are hard to get out due to carbon build up and its so a low milage bike, then there may be fuel/engine/elelctrical problems...

    It's not in the manual because 2strokes DONT use copper gaskets, it's only 4strokes. That's why in every 4stroke manual THERE IS info about the copper gasket.
    Simple

It would be great to update this 5 year old video and FYI....this bike DOES require both gaskets as seen from the parts fiche: www.partzilla.com/catalog/suzuki/motorcycle/2004/rm85l/muffler
