    With just one day to explore the city of Tamale, I hit the ground running to see as much as I could in Ghana’s third-largest city! Join me on a mind-blowing West African adventure as I try some northern Ghana street food and go on a local tannery and market tour of Tamale, Ghana!
    My afternoon began at a local tannery, where I could see leather drying on a clothesline. It’s made from sheep and goat skin and goes through a fascinating process. They soak it in a solution that makes it easy to remove the hair.
    🎥 WATCH: The Most Famous Fish Market in Ghana - davidsbeenhere...
    👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH: teespring.com/...
    Then, they use different plants as dyes to make red, brown, and black leather. Dying takes one day. Then, another man stretches it and they let it continue drying. They can make 100 pieces of leather per day. The whole process takes about a week!
    I wanted to get some leather goods! This was only the second tannery I’ve ever visited. Isaac and I headed over to the shop, where they make belts, sandals, wallets, and more. The soles of the sandals are made of car tires. The sandals cost 30 cedis, or about $6 USD. I also bought a snakeskin wallet for 20 cedis and two pillows!
    Next, we headed to the central market of Tamale. We passed through the city, past mosques, food vendors, seamstresses, and more.
    The market had farming equipment, yams, and more. We saw some porcupine quills, giant African snails, giant shells, hornbill heads, crocodile heads, and more unique items there. They’re used as medicine to fight illness.
    The market is very spread-out and quite different from the markets in Accra and Kumasi in terms of layout. I found a vendor selling traditional hats. They came in a variety of beautiful colors. I tried a few on and bought one for 20 cedis.
    Then, we found another vendor selling more unique medicines and ritual items including warthog tusks, animal claws, and crocodile heads. They died of natural causes and aren’t hunted.
    Next, I came across the tailors, or designers, who sew textiles into hats, smocks, and other clothing items. Further on, I saw beans, rice, fruit, as well as chickens, ducks, turkeys, and guinea fowl.
    The butcher shop contained ten butchers. I could see beef, lamb, and goat. The smell was intense, but I love seeing it all, including the organs!
    There were less crowds here, which I liked. I visited a shea butter factory and rubbed some on my arm. Then, I met a woman selling some. She has been making it since she was a child!
    Isaac bought a huge ball of shea butter for 30 cedis/$6 USD for his aunt in Accra. Then, we came across seven women pounding fufu at once, as well as organ soup. Next, I found a vendor selling fruit and giant bars of soap!
    By 1 p.m., the market was getting packed. Our next stop was the art shops at the cultural center. A woman named Sylvia sold baskets, wood carvings, animal figurines, leather goods, maps, and jewelry.
    At Adongo Art Works, I bought four brass beer openers for 100 cedis. Then, we went to get some fufu at a small chop bar next to a gas station near the airport.
    My fufu came with chicken thighs, a chicken drumstick, and peanut soup. I washed my hands beforehand since I would be eating with my hands.
    The peanut soup was sweet and oily and so incredibly tasty! Isaac told me that the peanut soup also goes well with rice balls!
    Fufu is pounded cassava mixed with plantains or cocoyam. It goes with every type of soup. It was so tasty and paired so well with the chicken!

    David I seriously appreciate you showing us the beautiful things Ghana has to offer. The people are so beautiful,humble and very hard working. In some ways it reminds me of growing up in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷. Downtown Ponce with so many vendors , so many handmade items so many friendly people. Always smiling . Even out of the city the little I can remember was super awesome as well. Again I appreciate it. Thank you 🙏🏼

      Northern Ghanians are descendants of Northern Nigerians (Hausa people) going there, is so similar to visiting Northern Nigeria,. They eat same good as the Hausa, and they speak Hausa language.. I find it just fascinating...

    • @ccdaerin
      @ccdaerin Před 3 lety +3

      @@princessnyeni5548 this is not accurate. There are many languages in northern ghana, Hausa being one, minor language. Most of the languages spoken in northern ghana are not related to Hausa.

    • @abzig9430
      @abzig9430 Před 3 lety +1

      @@princessnyeni5548 That's not quite accurate.
      Northern Ghana has their own indigenous tribes like Dagomba, Frafra, Mossi, Mamprusi, etc,. They don't have much to do with Northern Nigeria other than it being an entry point for the Hausa migrants long ago and both regions are majority Muslims. And not all parts of Northern Ghana speak Hausa to begin with. I would argue there's more Hausa spoken in Accra and Kumasi in Muslim neighborhoods than many areas of the North.

    Hey David, you inspired me today. Why? For several reasons. I try research videos before I post a new video and often I see one of your videos as a suggested video. So today I decided to look over your journey by videos starting 12 years ago. I notice many of your videos still only have a few hundred views, but it didn't stop your momentum. You just kept going, I noticed after the first heavy year you slowed down and didn't post as much, then hit it hard again. Maybe you hit a moment wondering if this would ever happen or? I am leveraging my savings trying to reinvent my life starting at my midlife, can I make it go, I ask myself, I hope my drive forwards is always stronger than my doubts. For most of us there isn't instant success and there is that fragile time between believing we can and trying to make that a reality, despite all the noise. Your long battle forwards gave me strength today Cheers my friend!!

    How you wear e traditional hat is significant. With e top bent to e side like u wore it, signifies someone who comes in peace, someone who recognizes that he is not the most powerful person present (respect for authority). But when e hat is worn upright, it signifies that apart from God, you are e most important/powerful/strongest present . I come from Tamale and I am happy about how Tamale was presented

    You missed out on "Yum Bakr".
    The groundnut (peanut) soup is one of my favorites.

    Did you eat Tuwo n'zafi, and different mouth watering foods? Great job for you and your tour guy. Thanks for coming

    My initial scepticism ( fuelled by the rather patronising introduction of "my boy Isaac") soon turned to riveted curiosity. Very enjoyable video.

    David I cringe each time you eat Fufu 🤣🤣🤣🤣 man you got to cut it with your index and middle finger downwards like a scissor to break the fufu ball into a smaller piece, then you scoop it up it your fingers close together excluding your thumb to get some soup and down that. It's a technique...if I ever run into you, I am teaching you but I really appreciate you showing out Ghana 🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭 ...your vlogs are awesome!!!!
