  • Buffalo is the 2nd largest city in the State of New York and only two and half hours drive from Toronto, Canada. The population of 256,000 has been declining over the last few decades; however, there are signs that it may turn around soon.

    Buffalo Metro Rail is the public transit rail system in Buffalo, New York, United States; it is operated by the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA). The system consists of a single, 6.4-mile (10.3 km) long light rail line that runs for most of the length of Main Street (New York State Route 5) in the City of Buffalo, from KeyBank Center in Downtown Buffalo to the south campus of the University at Buffalo in the northeast corner of the city. Daily ridership is 18,500 on a weekday. The first section of the line opened in October 1984; the current system was completed in November 1986.
    Metro Rail is a light rail transit (LRT) system as characterized by the American Public Transportation Association although it shares many characteristics with "heavy rail" metro systems and could be considered a "light metro." 80% of its track (5.2 miles (8.4 km)) is an underground subway with high-level platforms. This section has eight stations that are spaced fairly widely apart, comparable to subway systems elsewhere. This section is cut-and-cover from Allen/Medical Campus to Utica, then deep-bored from Delavan/Canisius College to University. ~WIKIPEDIA

    I know this kind of transportation as a 'premetro'. Because is a tramway with tunnels like a subway, principally. It's an interesting concept!

    This is light rail part of which is underground. Most subways are third rail power and passenger cars are bigger and heavier and operate longer trains. Thanks Tim😀💚

    When at the low level platforms, how do those in wheelchairs and those with walkers get on, as it looks like each entrance would need to have steps while the retractable part is in use?
    I note they seem to sway
    more than what other similar vehicles might.
    I'd probably say they are trams, usually coupled to form "light-rail" vehicles, yet they sound more like a train when in the underground.
    From what I can find, it was meant to be a "heavy" rail line at first, before it changed to "light-rail".
    I wonder if that's why the underground part has high level plstforms?

      @freshuniversegaming Před 11 měsíci +2

      At the low level platforms, there are separate accessible ramps. From what I've heard they ran out of money to make the downtown portion underground. It was supposed to be underground downtown and elevated uptown. They did the reverse. They will be extending it north in a few years

      @@freshuniversegamingI heard that it was due to the soil/rock conditions that prevented the path underground downtown

      Main Street sucks, just buisness no shops since it's almost impossible to park on. They finally are fixing it so hopefully main street in the next 5-10 years begins to pop again. All of the fun in Buffalo is outside of Main

      No, Buffalo is quite lively. It's just the metro rail, as nice as it is, is pretty useless outside of like Sabres games. It doesn't go anywhere other than just below Main St. Main St is a downtown core for business, it's not a tourist area for the weekend other than the Theater District at night
      Buses, taxis, Ubers are far more useful & most folks have cars anyway
      Once they expand to UB North campus in Amherst it will be a lot more useful
      They should run a line down to the new Highmark Stadium, a line out to the Airport, and 1 out to Niagara Falls too
