I'm going to show your video to the guys who think they have to change their piston after 50 hours when they don't even use 50% of their bike and they tickle the throttle. Finally someone like you who proves it!
my yz250fx is 220h with the stock piston.. I'm not a fast rider and only do weekend trails.
@@TubolMotoadventures That's a great example. It's not about the bike, it's about how you use it.
That one of the reasons we keep buying Yamahas @@TubolMotoadventures
I heard of KTM’s going 300+ hours on top end easily and still running great! I’m certain the Yamaha’s can do it too! ❤
:D i have 697 hours on my KTM 200 EXC 2016 and i am still using original cylinder (i change piston every 90 - 100 hours)
What fuel oil ratio do you use
@@dawkinschmidt3921 1:60 and i am using ENI (agip) kart 2t oil
@@lukasraus3391 isn’t that a pretty oil lean mix
@@dawkinschmidt3921 it is recommend ratio from KTM
@@lukasraus3391 r u sure? i wouldv thought more like 1:30/40
You're inspiring me! I still want to keep my 4t but I've been getting more and more into buying a used yz125.
you won’t regret it i have a 05 yz125 and it’s awsomr
Bro get a 125, I've had my kx125 for years. I've had 450's 250's and all sorts of other bikes. As long as you mix your gas to the right ratio and keep it maintained you can get lots of hours out of it. Not only that, they cost about 1/3 of the dough to rebuild
I did lol had a 2013 crf250r setup perfect for the woods traded for a 2015 yz125 threw the lectron/boyesen combo she’s like a Mtn bike with power it’s great
I have a 2000 yz125 and lemme tell you it’s amazing! It’s so light/flickable and FAST you should totally get one!!
@@liamhartman7398
Let's say 4T got 1L oil what u change every 10h.
2T got 1L gear oil what you change every 10h
So that's equal right?
Have you measured how many L engine oil u mix /100h ?
I help you. Your ratio is 1/40. So 1L to 40L petrol.
40L petrol is raffle 6-8 h ride?!
So you need 15L engine oil/100h
45L/300h where u rebuild the bottom.
Now count how much 45L 2T good quality oil and rethink which cheaper.
Great video! I love the Lectron H-Series I bought for my 1991 cr125r it's really brought some more life out of the bike.
This is awesome to see someone going the hours and proving it on vid for us, on his own bike. Vegas Romaniac also did 250 hours on his yz250fx w/ oil changes at 30-40 hours, and sent oil in to get results. His bike is around 300 now still strong. Yamaha's performance + reliability is amazing.
Thank you Brad! You are nice polite young man. Way better rider than I am or ever was at your age. I'm gong for the YZ 125X for my KTM300 replacement. The 300 made me a lazy rider. Thanks for offering kits for this bike at a reasonable cost. I wish you the best of luck on your channel.
Thanks a lot for watching Christopher! I think you’ll have a lot of fun on the 125. I definitely prefer it over a 300 for fun riding. I have a sale going on right now. Code “laborday20” gets you $20 off an order of $150 or more. Valid through Labor Day. You’ll save a total of $53 on the freight train package with that 😁
I agree that the YZ125X will cure you of your laziness! But you might miss the electric start, especially if you stall in a tight spot going up a slope. Include in your choices the 150XCW, TE150 and Beta 200RR if you don't want to kick start only.
Marc Bernard 2021 ktm 125 xc - it’s going right after the Yamaha enduro 125x crowd. No tpi. And trail ready with kick and e start, larger see through tank, and lighter than all the tpi’s... it’s the only thing keeping me from jumping on the 125x. It’s priced to compete with the Yamaha looks like. More... but not a lot more.
Don’t be fooled be rad is a asshole
I love the channel, love the content! Great job on the rebuild!
85 hrs and that looks great! Just Did a top end on my sons yz125x at 50 hrs. Ring was worn out. Besides the burnt up piston everything else inside looked great. Not sure why his ring was worn out so quick. But glad we caught it before any real damage happened. Out of an abundance of caution I am going to pull it apart in another 25 hrs and have a look to see if this was a fluke.
Sweet video!
TIP: leave the rad cap closed before you remove the drain plug. Open the cap when you are ready for rad fluid in your eyes.
I prefer to open it first then relise the pan is no where near the drain and watch it piss all over the floor
I drain it from the hose that connects to the pump, then the pump.
@@chickensfloat7427 LMAO
Tip2: get off your wallet and pay a mechanic - spread the wealth to prevent unemployment! 😜🥓
@@wipperwil I wouldnt trust someone else to work on my bike. I can rebuild and buy parts for any piece of it. Not sure why i would pay someone labor for a a few beers and some hours of wrenching in my garage.
Have you considered an aftermarket pipe? It could really compliment the modifications you have made. Two strokes are super sensitive to expansion chamber changes.
Awesome video keep up the good work man!
I like the barn backdrop.
The bike is brand new.
Congrats.
At 5:52, when tightening the powervalve shaft nut, lock the linkage from moving with the tool kit supplied collar (or use a 1/2" deep socket) otherwise you risk bending the linkage.
What kind of socket size can be used?
The exact 'bolt' size (10mm, 12mm, 7/16" etc.) of the socket doesn't matter, you are simply using the outer diameter as a 'stopper' not to bend the linkage as you tighten the nut. The usually supplied factory tool with a brand new bike is an aluminium dowel about 9/16" (14mm) in diameter by 2" (60mm) long.

What’s cool is that BeRad doesn’t look like a fast rider, but he is
Dam with the wheelies ! Nice . That's some balance .
Leave your radiator cap on when you undo the drain, then remove it slowly and raise the bottle to meet the increased flow ;-)
What's your plan with the barrel when it reaches service life, new one, reco or sleeve?
TIP: You don´t need to take the cylinder head off, in that way you save time and a new head sealing.
I wanted to show the inside of it for the video.
Instead of spending nearly 1k on parts you could...
-set the float height and jet the keihin.
-get the oem head straightened out.
-skip the rad valve.
And you would have 99% of the performance for 20% of the cost.
2nd, this guys riding is off the chart. Wow.
To start, it’s a mikuni on the 125. I travel a lot and so do many others. That means change in temperature and elevation. I tried doing the whole re-jet every other day thing on my 250x while on the road and that got old on about one day. And YES it runs like poo with the stock carbs when changing elevation. For the head, there’s more to offer than just fixing the squish, it has more coolant capacity and also allows for changing out the dome if you want different power curves. Although the OEM yamaha reeds are pretty good, the RAD valve has a smaller inlet which in theory will increase air velocity and provide better torque. Works well in co junction with the tapered bore of the lectron carb! So yes, you could do all of those things and then have a cold day and your bike won’t run like how you tuned it not would you get as good of cooling which is very crucial for technical riding that I and many of my customers do! Thank you, trying to improve every day I ride!
1:52 remove drain bolt FIRST, place the container under the drain hole and THEN remove radiator cap ;)
awesome sauce.. well done vid sir
Thanks mark!
Don't be afraid to run more 2 cycle oil than the manual says. It is the key to top end engine life. I run 5 Oz per gallon.
so wow . much majestic .
Was the audio quality okay for ya? 😂😂
That's why I love Yamaha there Powerful and Bulletproof which is not something common when it comes with Dirt Bikes I own a 2006 Yamaha YZ250 I once did 121 hours on the thing never blew I decided to put a 325 ESR big bore kit on the bike and trust me it bites back I am also a track and enduro type rider
Wow I dream of putting a 325 kit on my 1999 Yamaha YZ250
But please answer why would you go 120 hours why risking it?
@@fastride068 I suggest you the esr 325 but please change your jets for bigger ones as the description of the kit recommends you
I did 120 hours for testing purposes lmao I own a KTM 525 EXC-f and well my YZ 250 I wanted to test how far I would reach nefore having blew up I did 121 and still ran good I gave up my test and gave her the 325 kit
sick bike!
I have a 2017 YZ 125 that I have more or less made into an X. I am still looking for some bottom end power improvements and have been toying with the idea of putting a lower compression head and the CDI off an X to improve things a bit. Did you find a considerable difference with the mods you made, and have you heard of anyone doing the CDI change? I also have a 2017 300 XC-W Six Days which I love, but the 125 is so much fun. We ride in the Eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains near Calgary, Alberta so the trails can be wide open to super tight and technical. I am 6'1" and 195lbs and fit, so I enjoyed riding the 125 last season. Any advice would be appreciated. Great video by the way.
Awesome vid! How tall are you BeRad?
Thanks! I’m 6’ 170+

@Gavin Titan Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im in the hacking process now.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Gavin Titan It did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thanks so much, you saved my ass!
Love the camera work on each step by step, fuckin a
Thanks for the excellent info and video. I would like to get a 125x but would want a bit more for my size, I had a 2005 and loved the handling but needed a bit more for the technical hills. Have you considered going 2mm up on the bore and stroke, I have heard great things about this combo and it would be great to see you do a similar video for that upgrade.
I’m 6’3 200/lbs what’s a good starter bike? Probably Yamaha’s for size and good suspension?
I just rebuilt my 2020 Yz125x at 62 hours!
muy bueno bro! cada cuantas horas se lo cambias?
The forces, which determine load and wear, go up exponentially with RPM, adding more low and midrange torque doesn't effect reliability!
I love how clean the top end was. When I pulled my top end on my cr125, it was damn awful lol
You're not doing proper maintenance or you're skimping on which oils you use
@@backyardbraaapn1017 it was a used bike. I bought it, rode it for half a season (literally like 5 hours maybe) then tore into it. Last owner was stupid cheap and never really looked after it. That's why it was an issue
That is such a clean bike - even on the inside. Now for that enduro, young man.
Did you check for play on the lower rod bearing? I think I used to replace the wrist pin, and wrist pin bearing and circlips when replacing piston and rings......that would be a few years ago (45)😂😂😂😂.
Maybe this question was already asked and answered. Do you know what your starting compression was when new and just before the top end and also after you did the top end? Compression means a whole lot more to me than hours themselves.
such a good video , subbed with notis
Wtf is a "notis"
He's such an impressive rider
Thanks man!
Couldn't you hone the cylinder out to make it last that much longer? Great clip
might be time to do a new build video on a bike that flo yellow yz build was bad ass i liked your build video
This is awesome
Thanks rob!
What was your compression roughly before you replaced top end ? Mines at 130 should I replace ? Runs perfect . Thx :)
lol nice wheelie at the end man... been saving and going to get the yz125x finally got all the money together. in your opinion im riding a ttr230 at the moment (yes i know underpowered trail bike) been riding my whole life, tt3230 is my wifes old bike, I'm 5'9 150 pounds been beating the crap out of the ttr230 and its not really holding up to my abuse on the trails. would the yz125x be a good choice for me? or spend the little extra and do 250x. i ride single track trails mostly. in BC Canada
thanks in Advance
Do you think it’d be an upgrade to run a dual ring piston for your style of riding
The more I watch your videos the more I want a 250X. I think my 250FX would get jealous.
Doooo iiittt!!!
Don’t think I didn’t see that jb weld on the radiator! lol we’ve all been there just thought I’d call you out for it
Since the first week I had it! Just busted it open again today....held up for 120 hours lol
Cool Vid big Dogg
fourstroke owners see this and think "wait, you don't have to sell a kidney to pay someone to do this?!?"
No, 4 stroke owners be like, wow your already rebuilding a 2020 2 stroke
2 strokes suck pretty bad
My crf 150r had a LOT more than 82 hours on the thing and is just now getting a rebuild
@@_T_R_E_V_O_R_ your 150r is a pit bike, if you went 82 hours on a 250F you would of likely had serious issues if not a blown engine that cost more to rebuild than the value of the bike
@@Sleepy.Time. 4 stroke 125cc and under is a pit bike u idiot, a 150r is a youth race bike
U must know a lot about bikes 🤦♂️
I'm only 13 so it fits me just fine
@@Sleepy.Time. and if a 150 would be considered a pit bike it would be a 2 valve 150f
@@_T_R_E_V_O_R_ The 150 is not using titanium valves, its not using a high compression piston and it not tuned to produce horsepower over reliability. Anyhow not gonna argue with a child so have fun on your mini bike and get your valve clearance checked before its to late.
black and blue plastics be fire
I'm about to do mine now at 60 hours. Should I go from an A to B piston? Looks like thats what you did
Blu crew 😉💙
What oil are you running. That piston was clean. And did you replace it with an oem piston?
I haven't cracked a bolt on my RMZ since i got it 10 years ago.
hey man I noticed you lived the road bearing with a red fluid? do you run atf in your gearbox? I've been running atf in my 06 ktm exc300 for a while now with no issues
Buy a compression tester. Check compression every now and then when you do your routine maintenance. Seems like a lot of guys don’t need to rebuild top end as often as they think they need to.
dammit, as if i needed another reason to get a smoker!
Awesome video, just subbed to the channel! It hurt my soul seeing that left radiator, what happened to it?
Hah that happened my 3rd day of riding it. JB weld has held up for 120 hours! 😂😂 thanks for subbing and watching
What do you mix your gas at Berad?
Just picked up a 2023 yz125x brand new. I live in Canada and heard the carb has some jetting issues. Any advice on jetting specs outside of getting an electron carb. Once it's paid off I'll look at performance parts! Thanks
My sons ride hare scrambles. They go pretty go. We are doing pistons at 20 hours and less. Any more than 20 hours has seen catastrophic piston failure. Can't tell why the failure. All stock.
You can def get more then 2 pistons out of a cylinder i would consider those general wear marks instead of even calling it light scoring, probly can't feel anything with your nail
@@coloradodirtbike5930 I'm not sure what your trying to prove to me buddy, I said his culinder is fine its general wear marks unless he can catch his nail on it. I'm a small engine mechanic no need to go on about ring gap for whatever reason lol
I'd ditch the funnel web has alot of bad reviews for letting dirt pass but I'm in Australia and it's extra dusty over here
Thats YAMAHA QUALITY FOR YA!
My dad used to get over 100 hours on his 81 yz250 h between top ends and he raced and paddock rode it
What’s your brand of choice for two stroke oil and what ratio?
Have you changed the handlebars on the bike or are they stock.
this cylinderhead have this apex sx dome that you used more or less compression than stock?
Thanks for the great video! Nice to see the bike held up well. 82 hours our of a 125 top end is impressive. What 2-stroke oil and mix ratio did you run?
Think I heard that he runs amsoil dominator at 40:1. I run yamalube 2R at 30:1 or castrol 2T at 40:1 with similar top end results.
Dominator 40:1!
My yz125x has 50 hrs and runs flawless. I run Dominator 50:1 & valvoline full synthetic . I won't sweat a new piston for 80 plus hrs. Good view.
Gear i changed mine at 61.5 hrs. It wasn’t too late but defenetly time. It all depends how you ride
@@lenny3394 nice. I ride woods trails. Im an older guy and I dont bang on it too hard
I have two KTM 200s and have been considering selling my 2000 to get a YZ125X for more faster open trails. What octane and premix ratio are you running?
I think they should change the regulations in the motocross so the piston need to last for example at least 100h for racing.
The bikes would be 5kg heavier and would last much longer.
How long ago was 1988? Hmmm, let me see..
Okay I got it! 32 years.
Still running the stock piston and clutch on my Fourtrax 250R.
Is that bad?
Longlivethefourtrax250r
air cooled engines are something else, they will literally never break, with proper maintenance of course
if i were to buy that head would i have to still run race gas and if not what gas would i need to run?
i'd like to get a lectron for my KTM but can't come to spend that kind of money right this moment. probably a good investment though.
You install a oversize piston? Or keep the same size?
When we gonna see a vid on that Montana ride?
That is incredible. I am only getting about 40hrs out of a top end on my '16 Husky TE125 and I am nowhere near the rider you are. Mine has a much easier life.
I did 200hrs on a 2019yz125 and it still fired every kick and Iwas not easy on that bike 200lb rider. used a lectron.
What are some visible or noticeable signs that you should rebuild the top end?
What was your ring end gap on the old ring just for stats
When you tighten up the power valve linkage you need to wedge something in between the linkage and the head to prevent the linkage from moving when tightening.
Yes. I use a appropriate sized socket to act as a stop.
Put a steel sleeve in it, run forged Wiseco pistons, and keep your air filter fanatically clean. Youll be astounded with how many hours you'll get out of it.
Why would you run a steel sleeve?
@@64maxpower better than nikasil
What brand of premix oil do you use?
What do you think is the best ratio for a yz125?
👌👌
I got v force 3 reed shud have got that man
Haha - love all the spicy comments from all the shadetree mechanics... lol
Here’s the deal... if you chose and are comfortable turning your own wrenches too then do it and shut up...
Everyone that’s also doing it also agrees that the price of admission in taking it on is the price paid for the bike on day 1 and every cost benefit choice for costs to how YOU choose to run and maintain YOUR bike. (PS labour / time IS a “cost” - even if it’s cost from doing anything else).
Or feel free to start your own channel... or drop the bike off at the shop and go ahead and get soaked regularly - by someone likely even less interested in the next 100 hours of YOUR riding performance.
The follow up video to this one should be an interesting nod to the haters and small engine professors. 😂
Hahaha nailed it!! Yup at 130 hours now and still kicking like new. May or may not do a vid on the next top end, we will see
What oil do you run and what mix ratio?
What skid plate do you have amd where did you get it?
After looking at cylinder and piston, do you really think it was time to rebuild it? I'd say you could easily do some 150-200 hours before rebuilding it and would still be good :)
Absolutely, but I had it apart so I may as well do it since it’s so cheap. Better safe than sorry! I’ll make another video about that
That's the problem with just looking. And not taking measurements
A proper rebuild would include boring/plating that cylinder, and rebuilding it with the next oversize piston. That is of course if you want it to run right. Check your piston to cylinder clearance, ring end gap, deck height, etc.
Certainly. I really did it to make the video and at least have a fresh piston and rings in for a trip out west. It’s holding up great another 50 hours later.
American 015 when i rebuilt my bike all i did was wiseco piston and honed the cylinder and 45 hours Later of some hard riding some easy riding it starts first kick and my cylinder was god i just honed the little scratch it had
With a plated cylinder, you shouldn’t need to redo the cylinder every time you replace the piston and if you do have it replated, it can easily be returned to factory specs, so no oversized piston required.
jb weld for the win 5:40
What did you use to torque the cylinder base nut inside the power-valve cavity?
Gutentite method with a box end 😂
If I’m going to just use this bike for moderate trial riding and the bike is bone stock how long can I get out of it
2 strokes are so simple to work on compared to 4 strokes. I guess that's why the have such good resale value. Seems that no one wants to touch a 5 year old 4 stroke because of repair costs.
Hey man thanks for sharing. But at what ratio do you mix oil and gas, didnt hear you say anything about that in the video.
Usually 32 to 1
It's not his responsibility to tell us how to mix.
If you own a 2 stroke you should know!
Are this parts also got the 250x ?
This is my next bike
Did you check your ring gap?
Automotive scotch brite will make the cylinder look new again lol ive ran my cylinders over 600 hours.
What 2 stroke oil are u using ?
So to be clear, you installed upgrades from the very beginning, no hours on the bike in stock form?
I put about 5 hours on it bone stock.
