Christopher Riley is a professional screenwriter who co-wrote with his wife Kathy Riley the award-winning German language courtroom thriller After the Truth. The Rileys have written scripts for Disney’s Touchstone Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Mandalay Television Pictures, the late Sean Connery’s Fountainbridge Films and Robert Cort Productions. Christopher produced the independent action-thriller Red Line and executive produced the web series Bump+. He is the author of the classic screenplay format guide The Hollywood Standard, now in its third edition, and teaches screenwriting at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Riley's latest book is The Defining Moment: How Writers and Actors Build Characters (through Michael Wiese Productions).

Yes, yes, yes! Live first, write later. Experiences I cried over at one point in my life have become grist for my mill. They can, however, be exhausting to write.

Oh my gosh, he mentioned Frederick Buechner, one of the great spiritual writers! I was just thinking about Buechner this morning. That explains the depth of this interview, now knowing that Christopher reads authors like that.
I've been out and "lived life" and I'm still trying to make since of it. This like chapter 14 of my life.. the other chapters are still a mystery.
Who is your favorite writer?
Terry Brooks for prose fiction. For film John Fusco and Randall Wallace.
If you decide to write a Star Wars type of story, is it about keeping the characters grounded? What I'm trying to say is, while creating the fantasy, do you make sure the characters actions and emotions, can translate to how we feel, in the real world?
Definitely. I've even heard some people say "all characters are humans," meaning that no matter what animal or alien or fantasy race you make a character, they are still, at their core, a human being. Feel free to get creative with their culture and the ways their lives may be different from our own, especially if writing a sci-fi alien civilization or something, but their experiences and journeys should still be something we can get invested in and understand

As a former Dr, I understand his student the 50 yr old woman pediatrician. Being a Dr is like being on a mezzanine floor in life, nobody sees you without your role and if you do get married, it is probably not exactly you the other person is marrying, it is a Dr. You know about other people's lives but they don't touch you like your own. You spent your youth learning lists of molecules and nerves, and there is less satisfaction in the job than anyone knows. However, being a Dr is a form of tragedy, something you decided to do to yourself when young. It is as if the tribe sacrifices you, and you agree.
Thank you. The number of writers on TV and in film that went straight from school to screenwriting jobs has degraded the quality of work. Go live some life first in other industries, and in towns outside of the LA bubble. It will make you a better writer with more varied and interesting stories to tell.
Writers are unappreciated especially in this era of Hollywood movie making.
