    This is the consequence and result of what The Red Lotus did last season. The assassination of the Earth Queen created a power vacuum within the Earth Kingdom and is it now filled by Kuvira.

      That’s what I like about LoK, sure each season has a new villain but each villain arises because Korra defeats the previous villain:
      Korra defeated Amon but in return she lost her bending resulting to her connecting with her spiritual self allowing her to use the avatar state, because she can now use the avatar state she can now open the portals resulting to Unalaq to use her, because of that she found out that it may be better to leave the portals open resulting to people getting air bending in harmonic convergence, resulting to Zaheer escaping, which resulted to the earth Queen dying and Kuvira taking over.
      It symbolizes that no matter what the avatar does there’s always be conflict

      It was not ONLY the power vacuum made by Zaheer actions, a lot of leaders around the world tried to convince Su to assume a role of president/leader of the Earth Kingdom for a time period so they could install democracy into it. But she declined, wich resulted in Kuvira taking the power by force.

    Kuvira's speech to the governor at 12:28 is probably one of my favorite villain introductions ever --- because the thing is, she's NOT WRONG. She's being a total thug and a bully, of course, but she's right. She has the power to stop the bandits, and that power came from absorbing all the other states. It's a tradeoff. You can't have your cake an eat it too, getting a military to fight to defend your state means you have to fund and supply said military.
    You guys are already thoroughly in team "Kuvira is the villain" -- which is good because she is, and the show is obviously framing her as such -- but I just wanted to point out that it's a little more nuanced than that.
    And I fucking love it -- Kuvira is EASILY my favorite villain in LoK. Plus with the way it's set up, it's kind of like Tarrlok -- she's not a FULL ON villain where our heroes are actively fighting her when they see her, but they obviously have beef with her. Which allows for some great hero/villain interactions and conversations you can't really get with someone like Vaatu, Amon, or Zaheer.
    Anyway this season is great and IMO very underrated by most fans. It's my personal favorite.

      @DedSecExposed Před 6 lety +14

      Ben Wenger please don't ever compare Book 1 or Book 3 to Book 4, they had actual intimidating villains with fulfilling story lines. It's opinions at the end of the day, but I just don't see it

    • @BenWengerMan
      @BenWengerMan Před 6 lety +45

      Book 1 is plagued with love triangles, a useless filler of a probending subplot, and a villain that had no motivation and was so OP the only way for the heroes to stop him was for his power to stop working for no reason (Korra's bending got taken away! Oh wait no it didn't -- guess it didn't work that time. Oh no Korra is being bloodbent! Oh wait no she just broke out of it even though she can't waterbend. I guess Amon just can't bloodbend any more... funny how the only time his bloodbending fails is the one time he really needs it) .
      The best thing S1 had to offer was Tarrlok. A villain who was underhanded but not overt, and who actually had a motivation (until Amon's dumbass backstory ruined it). Watching Korra grapple with a villain who is on the right side of the law is WAY more interesting than having her go against some random terrorist.
      While Kuvira might not be as "badass" as Amon, she's thoroughly superior in every other conceivable way. So yeah, this is my point. S4 is underrated --- apparently just because it didn't have a spooky guy with a mask.
      To be clear, I still think S1 is very good, it just has some MAJOR problems. S4 is much more solid overall. Also as far as "fulfilling storylines" go, S4 is absolutely the best one. It has the best and most interesting central narrative from start to finish.

      Actually it's because it's an Earth Kindgom rehash instead of an update on The Fire Nation, Korra getting almost killed by air being treated as worse than losing her connection to the past avatars, reusing the motivations of Tarrlok [who did the whole order thing better] for the main antagonist after Zaheer was such a good villain, and the huge emphasis on the Bei Fong's. Also the animation was severely cut back so it didn't look as good.

      Don't forget Amon and his far left system of equality. People associate him with anarchy but he wasn't a true anarchist like Zaheer. He as against the meritocracy "using the power of the people". When book 1 came out the Occupy Wallstreet movement was going on and everyone was angry about the fact that 1% of society owns most of the wealth.
      The purpose of all these political viewpoints become clear in Book 4 as a direct comparison to the role of the Avatar and to help Korra decide the role of the Avatar going forward. Everything done up to this point was to strip the Avatar bare so that she can redefine that role

    So all of ATLA and LOK is a mixture of Asian and Indigenous cultures but it is at the core Chinese for most of the show. But certain regions were heavily inspired by different cultures and times. The Earth Kingdom is heavily Chinese (as is the entire show) but there are influences of Japanese and Korean seen in the Earth Kingdom. The Fire Nation is based on Imperalist Japan and you can see Japanese influence in a lot of stuff here, especially in names. For example Asami Satou is a Japanese name. Air Nomads are based off Tibetan and I believe there is some Indian influence in there as well. The Water Tribes are based off of the Inuit. But there are some more exceptions like the Sun Warriors who were based off the Aztec and the Kyoshi warriors who were based off the Ainu people who are the Indigenous people oof Hokkaido that Japan colonized. So every character in the show is POC, Indigenous or Asian.

    Kovira very much is not a villain at this point. She has strong beliefs and strong arms some people, but no main character would deem it necessary to stop her or her plans. Like you may not like her but what she is going is helping people it's just she is a bit of an asshole about it. She got control of most of the earth nation within three years you have to do some annoying stuff to do that much so fast. But the way I see it at this point is that she could use a chill pill, but she is doing the right thing overall the kingdom was thrown into chaos after the queen was killed. After you get more and more context into why she's doing what she's doing, you learn to like and understand her more instead of assuming she is a villain.

      Alex Morton I mean yes she is a complex character. But as far as her politics go she is a straight up fascist. Even at this point. She even has her own SA in republic city engaging in street violence to advance her cause. She wants to restore the earth kingdom to its former glory by elevating productive citizens and purging “degenerates”.
      Any nuance she shows right now is just that: a show. She can’t start with a total iron fist if she wants the support of liberals like Reiko while she is still consolidating power. It’s all about giving yourself plausible deniability by calling your policies “law and order” or “national sovereignty” until you’ve totally eliminated any opposition.
