  • Jean Moulin was one of the many French Resistance fighters who stood up to the Germans during the occupation of France in World War II. A true symbol of the Resistance and the Republic, many streets, schools and universities have been named after the French hero since his death 80 years ago. Moulin continues to be honoured across the political spectrum. FRANCE 24's James Vasina and Florence Gaillard go back in time to tell the story of the man who would become the face of the French Resistance.

Jean Moulin was righteous among the free resistance. He's role model for youths to learn and France's hero, alongside Napoleon Bonaparte, who emancipated minorities to have equal rights on reconciliation day.

An interesting and inspiring program, indeed. I've heard the song at the end of the program before. Does anyone know the title of it?

A resistance "fighter"? I don't understand. All this documentary says he did was hold meetings and then he was caught and died shortly afterwards. They must have missed something out. What fighting did he do?

Indeed, Jean Moulin didn't fight with weapons. He was the representative of General de Gaulle in France. His mission was to unify, under de Gaulle's authority, the many different movements of resistance which existed from 1940 to 1943 (with different political views from the communists to the right wing).
He succeeded in his mission in May 1943 (after many meetings with the leaders of the different movements, these meetings were extremely dangerous because of the German security and intelligence services: Gestapo, SD, Abwehr + the French Vichyst police) with the creation of the National Comitee of the Resistance and became the head of the French Resistance (there was several branches: intelligence, organization of the landing operation...).
The main fighting branch was the Secret Army (which later became the FFI (French Forces of the Interior). His chief was General Delestraint who was arrested in June 1943 (he died in Dachau in April 1945...). Because of this arrest, Moulin reunited the main leaders of the Resistance to name a new chief for the SA. It was during this meeting that Moulin was arrested.
The Gestapo knew that Max/Rex, the head of the Resistance, was among the men arrested. He was tortured to death but he told nothing about the organization.
So yes, Jean Moulin didn't fight with weapons but his role was absolutely crucial in the organization of the French Resistance and was a true hero.
