I am thinking next time I will compare my high-end carbon road bike with my budget aluminium commuter bike. It might be interesting to see the differences between the complete package. Thoughts?
Looking forward to this test.
All I can focus on is the amazing 270+ watts average.
Awesome. Good honest advice, and nicely presented. Thanks for your work on this clip.
Great video JP. You can clearly see all the work you put into it. And I also agree that a power meter is the purchase to make if you want to become (and quantify you’re becoming) a stronger cyclist. Keep up the great content!
I love these tests of the new tech. So far, disc brakes, carbon wheels, and tubeless tires are all hyped by manufacturers to buy new tech. The results are that they do not perform better enough to warrant the cost, at least for the non racer.
I think it may have been better if he chose to climb with a constant speed then compare the wattage output between the two different sets of wheels, the higher the wattage to maintain a constant speed means the slower the wheel right?
Love your bike with our wheels!
Thanks for letting us know your opinion on our wheels, we will try to make our wheels with higher performance.
Cheeers!
They are a great set of wheels, I am extremely happy with them. Top quality
Wow, so happy to know it! Thanks again!
Excellent information on both wheel sets. I appeciated you calling out at the beginning that the test would be subjective. It was thought provoking just the same!
I completely agree with you, first buy a power meter it will make you a better..."athlete" on a shorter time. I'm getting the wheels next, and I'm definitely going for the fulcrum racing Zeros. Thank you for this breakdown.
Racing zero is king
good sharing there mate, quantified effort
Thanks for the great video and insight into carbon versus alu. If they made a wheelset combining the two they would be an awesome wheelset. I like the racing zeros thanks
Thank you!
I’m for simplicity and availability/affordable replace-ability ;)
Therefore low profile alloy FTW for me!
Great test.
Thanks for the honest review. Food for thought as some of us believe the hype that more expensive bikes and accessories will deliver vastly superior performance.
it is the engine behind the pedals, there is a lot of expensive bullshit
So true !
@@sylvainbernaers Probably right !
Thanks, really helpful review. I’m thinking of new wheels and you helped me decide on the Fulcrum Zero Nite option. Was considering carbon but felt aluminum would give me what I wanted plus was concerned with rim brakes on carbon.
Did u buy Fulcrum Nite? I wanted to buy those but didnt because was afraid that the black coating would damaged. Hows your experience?
overall weights is the matter Great Video !Thanks👍👍
Good Honest review thanks 👍
I put on my first carbon wheels this week and did a test ride of 40mi in NYC traffic.
It did make a difference from my stock wheels imo. I pretty much got from South Brooklyn to the Bronx zoo and back with very little fatigue. I don’t know if I was faster (3 hours round trip), but it sure as hell was easier than when I’ve had my stock wheels on.
This is the video I was looking for. Thanks for that. I'm using the Alloy DT Swiss R470 and being very tempted to upgrade to a carbon wheel to get faster. However it seems the speed benefits of carbon wheels are not much as compared to price point.
Really interesting. I have noticed a clear improvement in average speed over my 100mi rides after switching to carbon (Reynolds AR58) from the stock aluminum shimano wheels. Difference of just over 1mph faster. Riding a Felt VR40 aluminum frame bike w/Tiagra Disc 2x10.
Anyone here has any experience with Light Bicycle wheels? Thanks!
I'm really late seeing this, but better late than never. I recently had the opportunity to demo a new bike with all the latest and greatest. In all honesty it didn't feel any faster than my aluminum Trek Domane with aluminum wheels and rim brakes. On club rides we average 17 to 19 mph. At these modest speeds I don't think all this aerodynamic technology makes much difference.
Great vid, the one thing I’d like to point out though is that on the velodrome test, your power varied more from what we saw with the carbon wheels.
Will the difference in performance be much lesser. If the zeros you have, were the competizione (with cult bearings)?
I doubt it. 80% of what the bike tells us is rubbish. 😂
Very good! Thank you! You have the decency to compare an excellent aluminum wheelset with a good carbon wheelset! This is quite fair! I watched a video before yours by a famous American Criterium racer comparing a set of Shimano rs100 (crap) with a Bontrager 60mm carbon wheelset!!!!!!! Totally BS!
You need to have the same cadence and power for the real test. But nice video!
Great video, but I think when you compare two types of wheels, to make the comparison more fair, you should test the wheels on the same tires. Besides, nice work!
Good point, I should've mentioned they were fairly similar tyres. Veloflex Masters for the carbon wheels and Veloflex Corsas for the aluminium wheels
did you use the same tyres?
Great video! Where can I find those Fulcrum wheels in the U.S. for the price point you mentioned (i.e., $900)? Cheers
That was AUD, which based on the current exchange rate is probably about 700 usd. I'm sure you can find them in US at a good price
Melbourne Cycling Segments If you have any ideas or sources for those wheels, I’m ready to order them for US$700!! Also how would those Fulcrums compare to DT Swiss PR1600 in either 21 or 32 in?
@@elliotresnick5433 funny when I bought the fulcrums I nearly bought those dt Swiss as I believe they were a bit wider but they were out of stock everywhere. I bought my fulcrums from Bikebug.com
Melbourne Cycling Segments I have a Carbon 2014 Synapse with Ultegra. Although the basic Mavic rim wheelset it came with is ok, I’m anxious for a nice upgrade this year! Do you think I’m on the right track?
@@elliotresnick5433 absolutely. Both great aluminium wheelsets. You could also go down the hand built path if you have a good local builder
Does it have any sort of warrantee?
All I can say is I have studied the "carbon vs aluminum wheels" issue quite a bit and this is literally the first video I have found that didn't favor the carbon aero wheels.
Perhaps my test was not that scientific, but it still shows that there is not much difference really
Probably has a lot to do with marketing and current trends aswell
I have to agree,,great real world test,,i have a pair of mavic krsyiums,,for a non racer these are perfect,,but boy do the carbons look awesome,,you got it spot on mate, they only look better,,its better to change position on the bike instead and cheaper
l have ROLF 38mm deep wheels on my TREK and l weighed them at 1540g so l don t see a real advantage replacing them with equal weight carbons besides l know they brake better :) THANKS FOR THE HONEST COMPARISON
Wow, the morale of the story, Carbon wheels only look good and you don't need them.
I got a pricncipia bike ,and a new cannondale eco 6. On riding them I swore evo6 faster so I did controlled test. Downhill roll from measured distance and timed. The pricncipia was 5 secs faster!!! A big difference at 30mph .but evo6 FELT faster
My Fulcrum Zero Carbon wheelset (1330 g) weighs less than 1900 g including Continental Grand Prix TT (190 g) and Supersonic Conti tubes (50g) and is one of the best wheelsets I tested (I tested several high end wheelsets). Your Fulcrum Zero aluminium is also excellent but heavier. Good quality from Campagnolo. No need to buy wheels from China.
Were similar tyres used on both wheels while testing?
Yes. Veloflex on both
@@melbournecyclingsegments7510 even my experience is same as yours...not much difference between 50mm carbon vs shallow alloy rims...I find my Shimano ultegra wheels more than capable in all riding conditions. Thanks for making the video mate 👍
Almost didn’t recognise hawthorn valedrome in the sun
Could you use the same tyres for your next test?
I actually did use the same tyres. The carbon wheels had Veloflex Masters and the aluminium wheels had Velofex Corsas. Which are the same
@@melbournecyclingsegments7510 Did you use the same tyre size ? same tubes and pressures? Not sure how you managed to get the heavier, aero wheels to be slower on the flat and yet faster on the climb ?
@@MrWesman43 well if you see in the beginning of the video, the carbon wheels is 400gr lighter and when climbing he use 10 more watts on the carbon wheel than the aluminium wheels.
thats why
@@hanifschanel check the video again, it are the alu wheels that are 400gr lighter. So thats why I also think there must be some other variables because the results are very counter intuitive, the lighter alu wheels are faster on the flat yet slower on the hill. *flabbergasted emoticon*
@@MrWesman43 Hey I did not notice that! :o
In the real world, the lighter wheel will always come out ahead. Aero doesn't help on a climb. No matter what the material the rim weight counts.
Which is safer
Aluminium probably
Melbourne Cycling Segments yea, carbon explodes... worse idea ever was carbon wheels
You need to test the wheels going down an alpine descent in 30 deg c heat. I know I’d pick the aluminium every time because I value my teeth
Yes!!
I live in sf. Carbon has never given me a problem. The only people who have ever poped a wheel was due to improper breaking technique . Stop holding them so often and you won't get heat build up. Because if you can make carbon explode your aluminum is going to suffer the same fate shortly further down the mountain 🤘
One thing of note... You were on the SMALL chainring and cross chaining it. Super inefficient and also nearly impossible to get your best speed out there. Wears the chain out faster as well. Do you normally ride on the small ring on the flats? Could get a more direct chainline with it on big and middle of cassette. Don't know how you didn't spin out even still. The faster you go, the more advantage with the deep dish. Also, when i have Latex tubes and Vittoria Open Corsa or those Veloflex you were riding on my HED Belgium C2, there is a noticeable difference. I've had this combination feel better up to 23mph compared to my ENVE SES 6.7 with Conti tubes. After the speed, the ENVE really start making a difference.
Ok I'll tell you a little CZcams secret. When I'm filming myself riding and taking those shots of my pedals and stuff, that is filmed seperately. When I'm doing the actual tests it's both hands on the bars and staring at my Garmin for maximum accuracy.
"The faster you go, the more advantage with the deep dish."
- Point...? Yeah nextt time JP will test deep dish wheels on bike with engine to test them at 70kph to prove your point instead checking them in the region of speeds of mere mortals. Now go to bed boy and don't embarrass yourself.
The cycling industry is gonna hate you for this...
If I didn’t see the video, I wouldn’t know wth a “boik” is.
thumbs down b/c you didn't use the same tires. gotta use the same tires to compare rims
Actually were the same tyres, veloflex. Masters and Corsas which aside from the tan walls are the same tyres. That bit of video ended up on the editing floor
That only says don’t ever buy Yoeleo
Carbon is carbon though, we're testing it as a material variable, not the structural integrity
That’s why all pros ride aluminum 😂 this is silly
They don't train on them thou.
The pros ride carbon mostly.
This man has a bald head. Only I can see this though so need to inform you all
Its a little smelly even with deoderant.
I dare not ride on China made carbon wheels
Wait until you realize almost all carbon wheels are made in china.
