How to Fix a Leak in Pvc Pipe | PVC repair coupling

  • In this video we'll show what we had to do to chase down the leak which ultimately lead to tearing open a wall to find the leak. Once we found the crack in the PVC pipe, which appeared to be the result of a joint that wasn't properly glued, we determined which sections of pipe needed to be cut out and replaced.
    We used two awesome tools to cut our PVC pipes - a Dewalt multitool and a Dewalt reciprocating saw. We are Amazon affiliates. Our links below will take you directly to Amazon where you can purchase these tools:
    Dewalt multitool: amzn.to/2SUft4i
    Dewalt reciprocating saw: amzn.to/2XWCEi6
    These PVC pipes are drain pipes and vent pipes and as such, they did not have water in them.
    Next we cut out the faulty section of PVC and remade a copy of that same pipe to be the repair replacement.
    The trick to make this repair strong and yet simple was to use a PVC repair coupling to connect the old and new sections of PVC pipe.
    This style of repair is effective to drain pipe, vent pipe and can be used to repair PVC in the ground as well. Especially if you are working outdoors, a PVC solvent glue specifically made for wet surfaces is recommended.
    Below is another video that we did that will show you

    I use the Fusion brand pipe cement now. It give you a nice slide factor when connecting and when you are done just put the lid on and turn it upside down to coat the lid and threads for a couple seconds. I have had used cement 1+ years old and the lid opens easily and the cement was perfect. I wish I had this stuff 40 year ago.

    Be careful with the slip unions. I'm a homeowner, but I have glued up quite a lot of PVC over the years. Always used rubber unions with hose clamps in the past. Never leaked. I tried one of these unions for a repair. It leaked. My fault I must not have used enough glue. I pushed it up and leak is on the bottom. These are quite tight looks like it pushed too much glue. Now to repair my repair I will need to add 2 more unions. Be careful and check your work before buttoning wall back up.

      In my experience, too much glue is much better than too little. It lubricates for a few seconds, allowing you to push and turn. Turning the joint 1/4 turn and and back is very, very important. The only times I've ever run into trouble was when I misjudged, used too little glue and couldn't turn the fitting. Remember to immediately wipe off all excess glue with your finger.

    What do you do if you did the steps you just said to do and you still have a leak? My husband and I had to replace a large section of our PVC pipes and we still had a leak , what do we do

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  Před 4 lety

      Hey Amy,
      We found our leak by working backwards. We found the site where the leak showed up ( a ceiling ). We went to the floor above and found a wall directly above the ceiling below. We then started low and began to remove drywall - working our way up the wall. A water leak leaves a trail. There was a thin wet line running down the side of the pipe. Following that wet line upwards, we found the faulty pvc joint.
      Removing drywall is messy, but it’s the only way I know to follow the leak backwards.
      Hope that helps.
      Thx for the question and for watching.

      You could always burn your house down and blame it on your dog, then spend all the insurance money on dope, and have the greatest month of your entire life, but the more responsible option for you may be to just leave your husband and move in with another man whose house doesn’t have any leaks. You have a tough decision to make, but the great thing about it is both choices have positive outcomes. You only have two reasonable options, but you can’t really go wrong with either. Try not to put too much thought into it, and just do whatever sounds the most exciting to you at the moment. Good luck 🍀👍🏿

    Why not cut it apart like you did but leave the two bottom pipes in tact, then glue the spot that didn’t get glued and put it back together with two slip couplings?

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  Před 5 lety

      Hey Butler... ,
      If that works in your situation - great idea. In our case the point of the leak didn’t leave enough extra pipe to attach a new piece. Plus we didn’t have a lot of flex in the pipes as 1.5-2 inch pipe is pretty rigid. Thus we had to take a larger section of pipe out to be able to work with it.
      Thx for the question.

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  Před 3 lety

      Hey 2 songs,
      That pipe extends up through the roof to outside. Rain and condensation can run do that vent pipe - which otherwise would run down to the drain pipes of the house.
      In our case, as the moisture ran down the pipe, it found a place where the pipe wasn’t cemented, and the moisture ran to the outside of the pipe and eventually showed up on the ceiling below ( main floor).
