I attended a concert in Paris in 1969 with the same musicians. Back then, I was 18 and was completely stunned by the performance. I decided to stick to my medical college...
Yeah I saw your comment on that BOB JUKE channel Wish we could identify where exactly this was... It appears to be '69 europe because of the other video on BOB JUKE channel with all 3 together.
In 1968 Barney Kessel took his place on a European tour as a member of the Guitar Workshop (with George Benson, Larry Coryell, Jim Hall, and Elmer Snowden). In 1969 while he was living in London, he recorded this footage at the Ronnie's Scott's Jazz Club with Kenny Burrell, Grant Green (guitar), Larry Ridley (bass) and Don Lamond (drums).
Grant played so fast for his time! Not only is his phrasing incredible I just can't get over the speed he plays at compared to even the greats of his era. People just didn't play like that back then, he was a beast! Truly the finest in Jazz
It's hard to believe, and quite a shame that this is the only known footage of Grant Green. The man played for decades until the late 70's. Nobody thought in all those years to shoot some film of this master. I know he wasn't very big in his time, but his influence since has been massive across many genres of music. How amazing it must have been to be at this show and witness these 3 giants of Jazz just smoking their guitars!
There's a lot of footage of Grant Green from when he appeared on the Gino Washington Show in Detroit in 1976. Grant was his guest for about a month (it was a weekly show). Sharony Green, Grant's biographer and daughter-in-law, told me years ago she's aware of the footage. Someone has to convince Gino to release it. She mentioned there was supposed to be a documentary about Grant, but sadly years later, I haven't heard anything about it.
Any one of these three of these guys are pure genius's on their own. I thought Grant Green was the baddest until Burrell came out with something from outer space, very dissonant and signature Kenny Burrell. Barney Kessell had that look of wonder upon his face.
+Alejandro Soza Well it's not as living as Pop. I see very few new Jazz musicians that make it. It's not dead and I didn't mean it in that way. I meant it as the popularity has died down but at least we still have the hard core.
Jazz is alive. Listen to Esperanza Spalding, Christian Scott, Mark Turner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, etc... Jazz is not dead it´s buried alive, in the underground.
Pizaz is right though, and I know I've heard Pat Martino say this, the jazz scene on the scale of what it was exists nowhere today. Most people can't earn enough as just a jazz musician anymore, they have to teach in colleges etc. The odd jazz club and festival is keeping it alive, but the "environment" in which these cats grew up in, learned their trade and thrived no longer exists sadly. It really diminished in the 60s as rock became more popular. We're lucky that a lot of them continued regardless, some of Joe Pass and Oscar Peterson's best work was done in the 70s and 80s for instance.
@@gecobrarrett4532 would you rather some free jazz a la ornette, have you heard the real story of why ornette played free, because in texas where he came from he could not sit in anywhere he could not keep time and play one straight chorus of 12 bar blues and that is as simple as it gets so don't say free is complex just white noise, for people who wear leather patches on their tweed sports coats, and think their intellectual.
nhoj277 I like what you’re getting at. Marsalis would agree. Although I’m sure Coltrane would have had a differing opinion on the subject later in his life.
Fascinating how twangy Kessel's sound is. Either he's picking hard, using light strings, or a combo of both. Either way, I'm digging his sound. Very interesting contrast from what Green and Burrell are doing. Cool video...
Kessel liked using the “Charlie Christian” pick-up, which is a single coil with bar instead of individual poles. T-Bone Walker usurps same type with a similar sound.
This is the FIRST time I've seen Grant Green footage. A MASTER!!!! Wow!!! I love Kenny Burrell -- saw him, talked with him, he is really great, but Grant Greene did something to me on this video. Barney Kessel is ok, but these other two on his flanks were just taking it to the stratosphere!!
Check out the wonderful instruments. Barney Kessel is playing his usual modified 1946/47 Gibson ES 350 with a 'Charlie Christian' pickup. Kenny Burrell has a blond D'Angelico with a DeArmond pickup. Grant Green has a blond Epiphone Emperor, modified with a Gibson McCarty floating pickup and pick guard assembly. This video has excellent close up views of each player's hands and technique.
John Keen well said John. These are cretins who wouldn’t know good jazz if it hit them on their empty heads. They need to find something that challenges them like country western or Lawrence Welk
Only a poor musician would dislike these 3 Giants of the guitar. I would love to watch those peole who disliked this video trying to play at this level of improvisation.
Still believe Grant Green is the greatest of the JAzz guitarists . The cut - it ain’t necessarily so - has Grant hitting one note that is so perfectly struck and spoken it would be difficult to do so if your not green or some shade of green . For Grant it was natural as his last name was green and his fingers made the magic grow .
Grant Green’s phrasing, choice of notes and swing feel makes him the very best jazz guitarist the in world. I say this With all respect and love for Wes, Jim, Joe, Barney, Howard, and the many other jazz guitarist who are all great and inspirational.

Thanks for the info Ton Ton Salut!
You say he is on guitar. Three of them are. I know Kessel is in the middle, but which is which of the other two? Thanks.
@@patriciajrs46 , Burrell is on the left, Green on the right.

One more video of him: /watch?v=ScTDt3XxiME . Grant Green is the "Jimi Hendrix" of jazz.

yes he did he was digging it he was on cloud nine!
So good to see footage of Grant Green. What a player.
and yet I see people downgrading him for some reason. The greats recognized his talent and his work most importnatly.
@@TheRocknrollmaniac I think they still call them "people without a clue" 😁
Wow, three of my absolute favorites together.
by far one of the greatest jazz jams i have ever seen. Grant Green = Genius
could this be the best video ever on youtube?? yes. I think so!!
Grant green! Barney Kesel! AND! Kenny Burrell?!?!?!?!?! this is too much i love it!
Where are you from? Your name is interesting.
stuff like this inspire me to keep playing in a essentialy dead jazz scene.
dead?

Authentic jazz guitar playing at its finest 👌🏻🎸🖖🏻
3 Giants...Grant Green is as always amazing...I love the way Kenny plays slightly behind the beat as they say...
Wish there was more footage of grant green. What a player he was.

Kenny B solo was so clean and behind the beat. Great
GRANT GREEN on film nuff said!!!
Hey brother - some things are eternal and that's jazz....keep the faith!!
Three masters playing together and as one. This is incredible!
Grant knew to bring his A game and his he did. One of his best if not his best solos I've ever heard.
Videos like this need more views.. these musicians are INCREDIBLE!
Grant green is the king!!! Look at that!!
This is the equivalent of Ruth, Dimaggio and Mantle all together! I mean how lucky to have had this wonderful music! Thank you for for posting!
and it gets faster and faster and faster...but seriously, this is insane
As good as it gets with three of the best all sitting and playing together. Fantastic!
Stellar playing from 3 of the greats!

Kessel didn’t use light strings. His attack was definitely going for the throat edged in between Grant and Kenny.
