  • Today I had to get my ewes sorted for my next breeding group that gets CIDRs on Thursday. I have pre-selected some before Christmas that are destined for the stockyard, but today I need to add some that were second repeater open at last scan (they get two chances).
    I also took some time to introduce you quickly to how I plan my breeding program.
    Full disclosure... Planners do not work in my personal life, but I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT them in my barn!

    Another great video, I loved seeing how well organized you are for the breeding seasons. In 2020 in a video you also mentioned how you decide at what time to sheer the sheep and hoof trim as to interfere the least amount possible once the ewes are close to lambing. It’s complicated but you do it so well. A great teacher! ❤️❤️👍👍

    I am a more recent follower and I have been catching up on old posts. The one I literally just watched right before this one, is the one with you and Amy ranting about work-life balance, and trashing the use of planners, lol!
    Btw, when do the sheep get their ear tags changed from the baby ones?

    So would your breeding program be more of the 8 month, 3 lambing’s in two years or the STAR program where it’s five lambing’s in three years? Just getting started an trying to figure out a breeding program! Yours seems to flow an be very functional! Trying to learn an improve ideas that I get an see from other producers, I really enjoy an look forward to your vlogs to learn more or get ideas from!!!

      Good question! I actually just had to write it out again... I'm not really either of those programs... I'll be lambing every nine months (if the ewe successfully conceives each time). So that looks like 3 lambings in 27 months...

Thanks again hope things are well!!!

    I'm curious if big x's on the ewes make people want to pay less for them. I wonder what the difference would be, if any, if she did a test group with a different, less obviously negative, symbol.

    Great videos. I’ve got about 400 ewes and am lambing them all once a year. I’m looking to build a sheep barn and want to know how often each ewe should lambs? My good friend is lambing 2 groups of 500 ewes twice every year. So that means 4 times a year with every group twice. I just wanted to know what you do?

    Does the cold of January and February and the warmer weather of June affect your decisions for when to lamb?

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  Před 6 lety +2

      Hey buddy... My decision to go to 4 breeding groups was entirely just due to management at lambing time. I was lambing all the time. I did however plan these lambing events into months that I know would work better for us. January and February I have always lambed, with hit and miss results. Always weather determined. So when I was deciding on when to lamb, I started with March break (partly because I knew I would have kids at home to help with such a big group), then I planned the rest every 3 months (quarterly) from there. I am nervous of my December lambing as it means I'm trying to breed in July. So that might not be too successful...

    Great video. If the ewe isn’t breed after this time, does she go into your next group and how many chances do they get before a cull? And do they not catch because of there natural cycle. I think you said once before the natural heat cycle is from oct to Jan.
    Thanks

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  Před 6 lety +1

      I give each ewe 2 chances to breed, then she gets shipped. So yes, if she misses this breed, she will go into the next group unless its her second offence. Often, the worst part of the year to breed is when they are out of their natural cycle.

    Hello Sandi.. you mentioned that you are usin 1 ram for 5 ewes. Why dont you try insemination? So you dont have the cost for rams feeding? Success rate for insemination should be around 70% taken from best rams.. and you can have 5 good rams in your farm just to be on safe side for 30% not pregnant ones.

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  Před 5 lety +3

      Just really hard to find vets who perform this on-farm here in Ontario. I know of one. And honestly, just way too many ewes to perform AI on as its done surgically. Cost is a factor also.

  • @ChristophfromSchwiiz
    @ChristophfromSchwiiz Před 6 lety +1

    How do you get the rams not to fight? I've tried putting them in a small pen before but they started swinging their heads at each other like giraffes. Lost one to brain damage in a couple days :(

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  Před 6 lety +1

      Hmmm. I'm not sure... Likely just luck of the draw here. How many rams do you have in your pen? Does the number in the pen have anything to do with it? I have 27 rams, they do charge and play with each other, but so far, nothing serious.

      premier stocks ones specially for polled rams, never used one personally, make sure to check the sizing chart. www.premier1supplies.com/p/ram-shields?criteria=ram+

      So on a typical day only one person does the sheep work. I am fortunate enough to have a co-op student for half the day so she either helps me with management jobs, or she does the everyday chores if I'm away at a meeting.
