    The best way I could describe this song is by comparing it to a modern day Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s both structureless and well thought out, and full of individually great ideas that should in theory clash, but somehow culminate in one big beautiful masterpiece. Every new verse is one surprise after another. Just goes to show how great Andrew is bridging starkly contrasting ideas and giving them form. Great work Andrew!!

    I absolutely love these song breakdowns - and I especially find it fascinating on such a complex, unique song. You can really see *why* this is such a standout song: from really intricate chord progressions that do a lot more than just looping around, to unique solo sections - it really is so good! I absolutely love the reverb vocal trick!
    The solos really feel like they belong because this track feels so prog rock. Your vocals really fit well - especially with the drive.
    It's just such a standout song. In all honesty, I think you can hear much more performative the song feels with the reliance on the Osmose, that is, that it lends itself to this sort of really emotive composition and performance. Such love!

  • @winjones4255
    @winjones4255 Před 10 měsíci +8

    Love how creative the song is. The different parts feel different enough yet still cohesive.
    I think the one complaint with the end is that there isn’t any deadspace after the abrupt cut. With I Want You (She’s So Heavy), there’s about 2-3 seconds of silence at the end of the track. That’s just enough time to give the abrupt cut to actually breathe and (at least for me) highlights that the song is in fact over before the next song is played.
    With streaming services now, they try to pick songs that go well with the song you are playing and they don’t have any airgap between your song and the next. This usually isn’t an issue because most songs have a less abrupt end and our brains can register the change from one song to the next.
    Cloud Collapse seems to be an even rarer case because the song itself changes to multiple different styles as it progresses. These abrupt changes happen enough where my brain expects the song to continue to cut to new ideas. So when the next song plays with no air gap, my brain goes “oh hey new part of the song.” There have been a few times where the next song fits so well after the end that I didn’t even notice that it was a new song until that artist starts singing. Which is cool in its own right, but slightly disorienting as a listener.
    Really awesome song. It’s a super fun listen. Heard it for the first time after watching this video and I’ve already played it way too many times since then

    I honestly consider it a bit of a privilege to be able to feel like I have a "favorite singer/band/artist" cause I feel like I'll talk to friends or peers and they won't be able to name a singular singer/band/artist definitively as their favorite. A lot of your music over the years has introduced me to many new genres or sounds that I probably would not have known to seek out otherwise. The variety in your discography has always been something I enjoyed and been a fan of for so many years. Here's why some random musician on the internet thinks this song slaps:
    1) The feeling is so solid here. A great rock song (to me) is one where you get chills. I think there's different physical sensations for each genre, but for rock it's chills. Cloud Collapse simply just evokes that vibe, and there's nothing really I can point to other than that. It's the combination of your vocals, the ear candy, the chord progression, those fat drums all together. It kinda reminds me of 2WEI, especially the ear candy and chords
    2) This vocal chain fits your voice very well, especially those insane belts. You're an incredible vocalist.
    3) Everything feels intentional and cohesive. The weird chords, sick solos, and different sections don't stick out. The key changes don't feel like you're doing a key change just to flex and do a key change. They feel like you're going for something very specific that serves the story of the song, and that's cool.

I've been following your work since the SongsToWearPantsTo days, and your incredible versatility and neverending growth never ceases to amaze. And I do love your voice, your singing has always been great!

    I've been gathering these random tips and inspirations for music creation and then applying them at random into every track I make, gradually attaining a larger toolbox. It's a process I enjoy a lot and feels like I've been witnessing the same thing happen with you through your channel over the years and this song feels like an amalgamation of so many inspirations, tricks and ideas you've gathered and shared over the years. It's super cool to see!

    If anyone here is a Depeche Mode fan, the flute-like part greatly reminds me of the haunting synth lead from Speak To Me, in both the chromatic decline of the bass note as well as the general ethereal feel of it (especially apparent in the live version where the higher synth part is stripped back)

    Evidence that progressive music-making is powerful. Truly an excellent song! Some of the production reminds me of Genesis and Rush, specifically song's like Jacob's Ladder. Really great work :)

    Such an amazing piece. The chord choice and your singing gaves this such a precious, bittersweet sound of heartbreak for me. Almost like it leaks right into your heart when you hear it. The many motifs seems to play on the different mindsets we go through during a time of loss. I think this is why it hits home these days. We resonate with it.

    It's a masterpiece, and a whole album like this would be absolutely amazing. On one hand it's "just prog" or whatever, but it still has hints of "modern electronic stuff" thrown in and some interesting unique things going on, and I've never heard any other artist/band do anything exactly like it even though it's similar to a lot of great ones.
    Personally I think the reason the solos "work better" than solos usually might (although I like solos in general) is because they don't feel like "here's a solo" that come out of nowhere but like a natural direction for the song to go, and the lack of a chorus might also be a factor since there's no "waiting for the solo to end and the chorus to repeat again" or anything like that... it also feels like a unified coherent whole, so they could just be thought of as "extended lead stuff" and not explicitly solos.

    For me this song falls into the same category as purple rain. Even if you don't listen to the lyrics it just sounds meaningful; almost spiritual. It leaves me behind with the feeling of having experienced a very special unique moment and wanting the song to last longer (even though it's already 6 minutes long).
    Absolutely well done ❤ It's a beautiful song.
    PS: I really like your voice regardless of the genre :)

  • @PiercingSight
    @PiercingSight Před 10 měsíci +2

    I think something that's different about this song is that it *sounds* like there is so much more emotion behind every inch of it, compared to a lot of your other music that sounds a lot more experimental, emotionally chill or dry, or kinda cerebral in nature (just like... very music nerd heavy). But Cloud Collapse doesn't feel like that. It feels like you put your soul into the entire performance and composition, from vocals, to chord structure choice, to the unusual sections that just got more and more intense within themselves and moving from one to the next. It's all about feelings not composition. (Even though composition is how you communicate feelings... but yeah, you can't push it, you just gotta feel it.) Most people listen to music for the emotions of it, not the musicality of it.
    It's a passionate sounding song, and people LOVE passionate songs. I know I do~

    About the thing you said about your singing voice: I don't know exactly why but it fits so well here. I never found your singing voice bad at all. I just think that, of course, every voice has a shortlist of certain vibes that it's just perfect for. And, I suppose, for whatever reason, the vibe of Cloud Collapse was one of those perfect vibes for your voice. I don't even really know fully why beyond that but I know that you just own it in this song.

    It could just be my own roots in progressive rock, but I’ve always loved when people are willing to pour themselves into something non traditional like this, especially in the electronic music world. It’s very emotionally powerful to me and I think it resonates with people.
    A similar vibe to me are songs like Heavyweight by Infected Mushroom or most of the Risk of Rain soundtracks, but especially the song Coalescence off the first OST (closely followed by The Raindrop That Fell To The Sky from Risk of Rain 2). In many ways, I think you and the composer for those games, Chris Christodoulou, did a lot of similar things with these songs and I love that

    I can't believe I missed this song! I love it so much! And yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head: Through-composed electronic music is extremely niche. I was always interested in taking rock influence into electronic music, but so far that didn't really work out too well. Rock guys have a lot more tolerance for such stuff demographically in my experience. Also, rock guys rarely really cross into electronic music, which is a shame, because electronic music could do so much, but the people who *usually* listen to it often don't appreciate that kind of complexity, while the people who probably would *usually* don't listen to a lot of electronic music.
    Also, there *is* something to be said about 'just' executing very well on a concept. Like a 2 minute solo can kill a song or help make it one of the best songs ever written - it depends completely on the actual solo. Same for other "advanced" concepts, such as key changes and/or modulation. It can feel amazing and lift a song from "good" level into "excellent" territory. Or it can feel forced and contrived. This song executes extremely well on all it does, imho.
    One last thought: I think it helps, that the palette of sounds is more like a "big" rock production and less like a "here is every sound and timbre imaginable" EDM kind of approach. I think that helps glue everything together more, a lot. The - relatively - low count of types of sounds (instruments/timbres) allows the listener to focus more on the actual content. Kinda the antithesis to Bro Step (I love both genres a lot, for extremely different reasons).

    This has been the song I actively show friends of mine. We all largely are into rock music, some hip hop, not a large amount of electronic music. I think the the slow burning builds of the song really get payed off well and I remember at “burst wide open now”, one friend specifically said “he should sing like that more often”. You do have a great break up in your voice when you scream (like in Bookmobile). I think your production gave a lot of extra oomph with the growing distortion as well, not to detract from the vocal performance (I love your voice ❤️).
    Thank you for going so into detail on this song, Ive been subscribed for a decade and was one of the people who commented saying it was their favorite song of yours. I’ve been teaching myself Reaper for the last year and your insight into production has been a constant help and inspiration.
