Spellforce 3 Reforced Review - The Final Verdict

- The solid story, good graphics, and decent amount of content make Spellforce 3 Reforced a reasonably good time if you can put up with the side effects of it being forced into a console experience.
Nice to hear the voice of Geralt in this game
I honestly will play any game voiced by him! There's just something about his voice that sells anything.
Wind's howling.
Funny that just reading this I hear the white wolf 🐺
Mmm place of power. Must be.
what?
Hearing Doug Cockle's voice again instantly buys this game goodwill for me and now I'm just THAT much closer to actually buying it!
The games exceptional. You will never forget your time with it, and more than likely want to play the first two in the series. Each game has multiple expansions. - This review has more slogans than any real facts.
Playing with the controller is only as bad as you let it be. Options / Controls has a slew of choices including pan & rotation speed. Center of the radial menu is where you cast, from 24 spells and abilities around it. Its all right there, on your bumpers and triggers.
The RTS is a feature of the RPG. Which is as epic as the likes of Ultima, Divinity, or Baldur's gate; grand quests. Though there are a few maps that are totally absent of RTS; others give you a way of opting out, or can be rushed. Its all part ofvthe story. The RTS itself is fantastic without going into micro-economizing, etc that RTS-only sims do.
Where the game shines is the AI. - If you think you're just gonna lead the enemy down the garden path into your meat grinder, like lemmings? Get ready for a bloody nose! On easy you can get away with it, maybe. - However, generally speaking; your overall strategy is only part of the battle. You need to understand logistics; and you need tactics in each part of the map you are in as well. Knowing why you are there is important. The AI won't fail to exercise those qualities on you.
Exploitation, fixing ops, spec ops with your heroes, flanking, pincers, etc.. - its all there; and if you just sit on your hands, you get to watch your army get decimated. So don't be afraid to push'em around through the fog of war. Make as many groups as you need to. You can even create a group out of buildings and take your spawn point with you! 😉
Have fun. 👍
Yeah, kind of a talking points review.
Excellent review, man. You sure know how to hook a reader. This game is up for free trials with PS Plus and you can bet I'll be testing the waters asap. Thanks!
Nicely written review dude.
Thanks for the comments 👍
It wasn't really meant to be a review. Just trying to remind authors that we get games advertised at us non-stop. They need to tell us something more than generalizations we can see at a glance. - the games exceptional, and the feeling one gets is not unlike the playing Diablo II for the first time; where the experience is smooth, and all its parts just come together so very well. The score is fantastic.
Thank you man, super well written! Do you have any tips for the console experience?
Not a great review at all. No mention of the premise or storyline, no mention of the plague. What are the playable races? Gameplay mechanics? Did the reviewer even play the game? Pretty damn bad review for a very good console RPG/RTS hybrid.
Agreed
I agree, especially with how fantastic the story is. I think the reviewer missed the mark by focusing 80% on the port, but treating the review like people already know the quality of the game itself.
Yup, I agree
Is it just me or did this guy spend the entire review articulating only ONE single aspect (console friendliness) in 20 different ways - just throw one last 10 second blurb about sound design?
This. I was trying to sell this game to a friend so we could co op til we watched this review together. Now he's like no way. Sigh
I just picked it up for free (ps+ membership) and I was looking for a review or tips.

This feels like the Lord of the Rings BFME II experience I’ve been craving on Xbox since the Xbox 360. I must have it.
@@DarrenExplorz Excellent! I’m pumped!
I loved battle for middle E 2. Scks I can't play ot on Xbox one. I just might download this.
@@novalongclaw5215 I wish they would back-compat that game! I don’t need online, I’ll play Skirmishes!
Try Iron Harvest
@@maneco88 What be that then?
This game was absolutely phenomenal , I hope to see a 4th SF
Me too. Conquest of eo didn't interest me much.
Controls definitely take some getting used to, but it’s a nice well written game with surprisingly great dialogue!
Even the book/notes/scripts are pretty well written.
It just needs getting used to. It's really really enjoyable - delivering both RTS and isometric RPG(realtime instead of the usual turn based) - while having no real issues/downsides on the PS5. No problems at all. If compared to anything Mouse and Keyboard of course you will just bring out blemishes that really doesn't affect anything essentially really...
I just started this game on a whim... and holy smokes it's really good so far. It's kind of throw back to the older PC games. I could tell right away this must of originally been for a PC as well. Other than some wonky controls, I really like this game.
Can someone please explain this to me, because I admit, I am not very Knowledgeable in this department- The Xbox Series consoles as well as the PS5 both support a mouse and keyboard.. Why are these sort of games not programmed to support them?? Is it that it is too difficult to get the consoles to run the games with those peripherals? Is it that the game developers just don’t want to mess with it?? I just don’t understand it..
The story strikes me as very "fantasy Mass Effect 3"
The small scale combat and character progression strikes me as "top down Dragon Age". While I haven't played Baldur's Gate, I have played Divinity Original Sin 2, and it also feels a lot like a real time DOS2 considering there are PLENTY of dialogue/narrative options
The macro/army combat somewhat breaks it for me. It feels like a clunkier version of Starcraft/Warcraft. It's a bit hard to see the buildings until you get used to it. Group selection is a bit annoying, but that Dragon Age combat pause with enemy stats is also present, so you can micro stuff more easily.
The aesthetic looks really good, but it doesn't "pop" in a few maps, most notably the prologue. You need to adjust.
There's a lot of reward for exploring the maps, so it's got that openworld aesthetic.
You think it feels like DOS2? I would say it’s more Pillars of Eternity.
@@Cheesefist yeah it's more pillars of eternity. Pillars to me was a little more fun though.
@@MrREAPERsz pillars 2 is far and away my favorite CRPG, closely followed by DOS2
Solid review. If I could dig for a critique it would be that the console VS PC, as a theme, took some skipping. Subscribed regardless!
Never heard Of it, just found it free on ps plus so i cant wait to try it, have been looking for this kind Of game for a long time🤩 and nothing its better to hear voice Of geralt again ❤️
How does this channel have so many subs?
Hoping to be able to get into this soon as I’ve been really excited about it since it was announced. It just feels really unintuitive to play as a console player. I guess I just like my analogue stick to move my character and attack to be assigned to a single button 🤷♂️ Or to know what I’m supposed to be doing and how to do it. I think it’ll just take time
Keyboard and mouse support is a glorious Xbox feature :) problem solved brother
Edit: idk about playstation but seems likely
Hey I’ll take what I can get. RTS games are very limited on Console and the main one I was playing because it’s the very few was Sudden Strike 4. While I like playing Sudden Strike not being able to build a base and have to capture a train station to build troops didn’t give me that base builder feel PC RTA did. Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 is the perfect example of a Console on PS3 that I loved and I want more RTS games like that on the PS4
I get massive white flashing almost every couple of minutes, the flickering is horrible, surprised it seems to be just me…
I don't mind the small text, and button managing. I'm just happy I'll finally be able to play this game!
I like the part in the game when the footman screamed after you ordered him to attack.
This is very cool... I'm loving PC games in console.
I can never get enough RTS
The game “They Are Billions” are there more games like it on the Xbox??
Is that Geralt ?
same
Yeah, same VA
The devs missed an opportunity to utilize Gyro Aiming (Motion Control) on Playstation.
I use Gyro Aim a lot when applicable for shooters or when roaming through menu settings and am quite adept with it. I use it for the onscreen keyboard as well. When implemented semi-well, it mimicks a mouse once you get use to it and has the 1 to 1 intuitive feedback.
If the devs gave an option for this, it could have given players SOOOO much more freedom, speed and accuracy to play RTS games on a console with a controller. Hopefully, we might see developers actually take advantage of this in the future.
It looks gorgeous.
Enjoying it a lot so far. It's like Age of Empires 2 and Dragonage Origins had a baby. 😁
He mentioned there's better RPG's out there right now. Anyone got any recommendations aside from the big ones like the Witcher 3 etc.
If you dont need any RTS elements and havent played it by miracle, Undertale is a masterpiece
Divinity Original Sin 2 (turn based)
5:40 I can. Give us a dedicated button like (X) or (RT) for example that will change left stick "mouse move" to either half speed or double speed when pressed. This would make using a controller as a mouse replacement infinitely more accurate and smooth, compared to how trash it is in every single game so far
...Geralt, is that you?
Is that you Bellular? Same exact voice mannerisms
Excellent review. Well written and well narrated.
I didn't find it to be a helpful review at all, didn't tell me anything about the gameplay.
What you smoking he just waffled about nonsense only relatable to console players...
@@Mortonbmx Want a PC review? It is shit and a shame for the genre. The only reason it did rather good sales is because marketing manipulation and the absolute desert the genre has had for the last 2 decades. It's really really bad; designed for the youngest kids where the gameplay is not important.
Moaners will moan about a game they have no intention of playing..
I’m not going to play this
Facts
I'm just wondering if it would be worth playing the first one. Pay $10 to see if I like the style before I drop $40.
My biggest complaint is the ending of the campaign. I mean, once you finish the campaign there's isn't any gaming. I don't mean that there's nothing to do. I mean that the game ends and you can't play anymore. I'd like something to keep me playing. I couldn't even finish some quests in time. Everything has to be done before the final main mission coz you literally can't play anymore. It's stupid to be honest. What's the point of getting all the loot or levelling up. There's also no new game+. Something must be done about it. The dlcs are also unrelated to the main campaign so new playthrough every time😢
Bro that’s how RPG and RTS games have been for years. I still prefer games like SpellForce over bland stuff released by Bethesda.
Am I the only person who thinks the RTS ruins the game? I'm about 30 hours in and I'm tired of building an army over and over again on every single map. The enemy has 200 soldiers before I can train 20 of mine. Plus I have to sit and defend my camp while my soldiers are being trained. Meanwhile the enemies spawn unending waves of soldiers. Once I got to the 4th map and realized I was doing the same thing but defending even more points on the map I lost interest in the game. This is a great looking game and the combat is pretty good. But standing around managing resources to build any army gets boring the more I do it. I love the rpg elements where I can manage and build my core four characters, explore the map and get lost in the interesting story line. This game received tons of praise and I'm disappointed that I didn't enjoy it.
Nah the rts bits are my favourite. Really keeps you on your toes.
@@jessefisher1809 Maybe I'll give it another try. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
After seeing the way the game looks it’s not worth 59.99
i didn't like Spellforce 2 for several reasons
1. AI break it's own rules to have advantage over player, example: i can have maximum ONE titan, AI can have several titans
2. when main character reached maximum level companions stop level-up, meaning: main character is overpowered, companions severely underpowered
3. too many puzzles, in expansions it's even worse, it's not puzzle game, it's STRATEGY game
i didn't played Spellforce 3 yet, but i hope they are fixed those issues, especially 1 and 2
Sentenza Noria sound oddly familiar. Geralt of Rivia ! ❤️
im finding it hard to get a definitive answer so thought i would come here. Does anyone know if it is crossplatform between console and pc?
No.
why is the dislike % so high? Is it because people don't like the game or am I missing something?
Unfortunately I'm not convinced yet. I don't play RTS games, but I love RPG's and I'm intrigued but not enough to spend 60
It's 8 dollars for humble members right now if you got a pc
or 10€ currently on sale on steam

In Spellforce 3 RTS tasks are harder a bit than Spellforce 1 and 2. RTS stuff were much easier than e.g. in Warcraft. I can end whole campaign without cheating. In Warcraft 2/3 it is impossible unless you are maniac ;>
That is why dragon Age Inquisition is the best combat system for these types of games on console
Cool game that released in a odd state.
If it was released the way its now, it would have done better.
Is it better now? How so? Thinking of getting it on sale

You can play the multiplayer and skirmishes for free. Try it.
@@dnaseb9214 I'm guessing your talking about PC?

What is the fps on the ps5? 4k 60fps? or 30 fps?
I can't play co op on console at all. What's weird too is everytime I make a lobby, and I'm in a private chat party, while trying to invite my friend, the game will eventually just disconnect me from psn. I can literally play anything else after no problem, but happens everytime in lobby
There’s a problem with the matchmaking at the moment the developers are working around the clock to fix it
finally a good rts on ps4/ps5
bro does this have couch coop
Ff 14 proves that a keyboard can be fluid
Still no Undead race or Daemons
They have dark elves with spiders and demons that can be summoned.
You can make your own races with mods.
Damn i got to get this.
I am playing the first up to this day
I mean people whining about the controls on Halo Wars but I mean what else do you expect using to analog sticks to move around awkwardly they did the best they could man they did the best they could it was probably way clunkier before it was finally released at least it's not like some games where they decided to make the cursor stick to every freaking button on the thing before you finally get to the one you're trying to click
So they could do the same what age of empires did on console , LET US USE FCKING MOUSE AND KEYOBARD;o
Can't play online but still will give it shot
Can you play this with controller and keyboard combined? (so at the same time, keyboard for hotkeys etc)
why the review talks so much or only about the consol game...? the tittle is "Spellforce 3 reforge review"
Freedom of a keyboard...LMFAO w you pc dorks...i have a great PC and series x and ill take console controller any day over 120 keys on a freaking board!!! Facepalm
Anyone know if mouse Keyboard input is supporting this game on xbox? Thx
RPG part is excellent. However, RTS in campaign is still a mess, way too much chaos, unbalanced.
Title should of added console review
For some reason I find isometric view games not appealing.
I feel you there, Divinity original sin 2 got me into isometric games though.
@@abw1317 oh it's that interesting huh? I'll check the reviews. But I'd prefer a 3rd person game with well defined classes.
@@hakxxawofficial9452 Yeah, I played the game very zoomed in most of the time lol
That’s a shame if you like RPGs. Some of the best RPGs ever made are isometric.
I was a kid in the 90’s so I got used to it. I get that if you’re used to modern games though it can feel pretty disconnected and restrictive.
When did you start gaming? because games started from isometric
FF 15 proves that controllers can be fluid
What?
Meant ff14
Spellforce 3 was full of quest bugs.I loved the game but i quit because of that.
gamingbolt score is under rate
Why does it look like an old style game I can’t play anything that’s not realistic looking when playing the story line seemed amazing but game play horrible

Looks like Baldur's Gate.
Wow Witcher 4 looks pretty sick
Your narrative is not aligned with what you show in the video. You critize about the games ability to blend RTS and RPG aspect. You should have learned first on how to blend your narrative into all the actions that you did within the game itself (video). In fact your narrative is just talking in circles about the same thing, which is constraints within the console. Your video does not expose that point, although you focus too much talking about that point.
On the other hand, a game review should be focusing about the game play itself. Give explanation about the things that you did in the video. What makes it attractive and what makes it not intereseting or useless.
So in short, it's an amateur review video. You should learn more on how to make a video review from IGN or GameSpot.
The RTS part of the game is not very well balanced, enemies are rushing very fast so fast that one won't even have the time to read the tutorials in the first RTS mission. If you're into fast paced RTS maybe you will like it. The RPG part is ok but I haven't finished the story mostly because of the bad RTS part.
Keep playing and grind it out, it wont seem as fast. Have u played they are billions before?
That game is good practice for this but ye i love rts games and been waiting years for a good rts tocome to console
I like how the rts parts are challenging. but tbf I've been playing rts games my whole life so I can see it being overwhelming to a new player. Did you try turning the difficulty down?
Damn..... i was hoping the full campaign was 2 player :-(
Two minutes in and I still don’t know anything about the game that I couldn’t read from a summary or the back of the box. Absolutely horrible review and I will be avoiding your channel in the future.
I bought this game at steam launch. So many times I try to p li at it, but it's like give us email, do this, do that, and very complex to just sign in, start and relax. So I turn it off and choose other games.
It only asks you to create an account, which you can play without.
Damn you’re way too sensitive if that’s enough to turn you off lmao
Skip this pos game if you want to play online Bec the game is basically already dead and online mot working so yea they cant even make online work for the 10 people playing this game
